CHAPTER 17

Frank opened the door to his younger brother’s room. He smiled as he saw that Joe was still in bed. True to his word, Joe had vowed to sleep in as late as he could until school started. With one week of summer vacation left, Joe was getting as much sleep as he could! Frank was amazed that Joe was able to sleep, considering he was practically lying half off the bed. Sprawled on his stomach, the left half of Joe’s body was hanging off the edge of the bed. His blanket was tangled and bunched up around his mid-section. Frank walked into the room and lightly tapped on Joe’s foot.

“Hey, sleepy-head, mom says it’s time to get up.”

A soft mumble was all Frank heard from Joe. Lifting Joe’s foot, Frank started to tickle him. Joe was instantly awake; he tried to loosen Frank’s hold on his foot. Unfortunately his older brother had a firm grip!

“Okay! Okay! I’m awake! Stop tickling me!” Joe yelled amid his laughter.

“It’s about time. Mom said to get cleaned up and come downstairs; your breakfast is getting cold.”

Joe sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Time is it anyway?” he asked with a yawn.

“Almost ten o’clock, hurry up! I think Dad has a case for us!”

This news caused Joe to perk up. “Oh yeah? How do you know that?”

“He was in his office and when I passed by I heard him talking on the phone. Do you remember Jack Reynolds?”

“Um…no, but then my brain isn’t functioning just yet.”

“You know, I could say something, but I won’t,” Frank smirked.

Joe threw Frank a mean stare as he headed for the bathroom that they shared.

 *****

As Joe stood in the shower, the hot water coursing down his body, he did remember Jack Reynolds, more specifically Miracle. Joe had liked the young girl; he thought she was nice. He recalled feeling sorry for her, though. She wasn’t allowed to do a lot of things that he and Frank could. He always felt bad that she couldn’t roughhouse with them. He thought about his seventh birthday, they had been invited to the Reynolds’ home. Miracle was celebrating her birthday too and her parents had thrown her a pool party. But her father wouldn’t let her swim with the rest of the kids.

Joe remembered spending half of his time keeping Miracle company and the other half swimming and jumping into the pool. As Joe dried off and put on clean clothes, he wondered why Mr. Reynolds had called, and what kind of help he wanted from the Hardys.

*****

Miracle Reynolds had been up for hours; she was too excited to sleep. In one week she would finally be attending school with other teenagers! For eight years, beginning when her mother died, she had been home-schooled.

Miracle let out a sad sigh as she thought about her mother. Her father had always treated her like a fragile porcelain doll. Afraid that she would shatter to pieces if she fell or got sick. Miracle knew that her mother worried about her too, but she tried to give Miracle a normal childhood. Granted, Miracle spent more time in hospitals than most kids, and probably could claim to have a small pharmacy in her medicine cabinet. Ever since a drunk driver had smashed his car into Sarah Reynolds’ vehicle, though, Jack had been very protective of both his children – more so of Miracle. Shane attended a private school for boys, while Miracle had been home-schooled. Her live-in nurse, Minerva, was also her school teacher.

It irked Miracle to no end to have such special treatment. She still remembered the times when she was allowed to play with other children, to go to birthday parties and watch Shane play baseball and soccer and football! She had finally convinced her father to let her attend Bayport High for her junior and senior year.

“Hey squirt, you up and ready for breakfast?”

Miracle turned and smiled when she saw the handsome young man standing at her bedroom door.

Shane Reynolds, his reddish-brown hair still hanging past his collar and his amber-colored eyes twinkling with happiness, smiled at his sister. His tall, lean muscular body leaned against the doorway.

“Shane! I thought you left for Penn State already!”

“Change of plans. I decided to stay here and go to Bayport University instead.”

Miracle’s happy smile turned into a scowl. “Why? You aren’t staying here because of me, are you?”

Shane rolled his eyes. “Yeah, like the whole world revolves around you! No squirt…the truth is…I flunked out at Penn.”

“But you told Dad…”

“I know, but at the time I thought I had passed, and by the time I found out I hadn’t…”

“How did Dad take it?”

Shane’s left eyebrow shot up. “What do you think?”

“That bad, huh?”

“He’ll get over it. Besides, he’s got other things on his mind.”

“Oh…you mean me.” Miracle said in a soft voice. She always felt as if she took away Shane’s share of attention because of her illness.

“Stop right there! I know what you’re thinking…I know that Dad loves me…sometimes he just has a hard time showing it. I don’t want you to go blaming yourself, okay?”

“Okay, so what’s for breakfast?”

“I don’t know what you’re getting…but I know for a fact that cook made delicious Eggs Benedict for me…she probably made you a nice salt-free, sugar-free, egg whites-only omelet or something equally horrible.”

Looking beseechingly up at her brother as they walked down the hallway, Miracle gave Shane her best pout.

“Shaaane! You’ll give me a bite of your Eggs Benedict won’t you?”

“Sorry, those tricks don’t work on me anymore…nope, so sorry…not gonna fall for it!”

But when the cook placed a plate of whole wheat pancakes topped with strawberries in front of Miracle, Shane heaved a sigh when his sister looked over at him again, her emerald green eyes pleading with him to share his breakfast with her. He knew that he couldn’t deny her, and was glad that their father was still in his den talking on the phone.

*****

Once Joe had finished eating his breakfast, he followed Frank into their father’s office.

“Good to see you finally up, Joe,” Fenton said with a smile.

“Hey, I’m on vacation!” Joe replied as he sat down next to Frank.

“I just received a call from Jack Reynolds. Do you boys remember him?”

“Didn’t you help find his daughter after the chauffeur kidnapped her?” Frank asked.

“Yes I did…two years later, Mrs. Reynolds was killed in a car crash. I don’ t know if you boys knew it at the time, but Miracle Reynolds has a heart condition. When his wife died, Mr. Reynolds took Miracle out of school, he was afraid that something would happen to her. Jack, Mr. Reynolds, is very protective of Miracle, as is her older brother Shane.”

Frank and Joe looked at each other, not knowing where this conversation was going. Seeing their confused faces, Fenton held up his hand and smiled.

“I’m getting to the point of this meeting, I promise. You see, Miracle has been home-schooled for the past eight years. She finally convinced her father to let her attend Bayport High this year. Unfortunately, Jack has been receiving threatening phone calls. These threats have been made against Miracle, and he’s afraid that she is going to be kidnapped again. This is where you two come in. While Miracle is attending school, I want you to keep a close eye on her and let me know if you see anyone suspicious hanging around the school.”

Fenton held out a piece of paper. “Jack faxed me this picture of Miracle.”

Frank and Joe studied the picture; they saw a pretty girl with dark blonde hair and green eyes. As Joe looked at the picture, one thought flashed through his mind.

‘She’s not going to like this.’
