THE CHAPTERS |
As soon as his alarm went off, Frank was out of bed. He didn’t know why, but he always loved the first day of school. There was a certain excitement to that first day. Knowing that Joe would have hit the snooze button on his alarm clock, Frank took advantage and got into the shower first. He didn’t have to worry about making sure Joe was up. Frank knew that their mom always woke Joe up that first day. It was kind of a tradition for mother and son. As Frank was getting dressed for school, he could hear Joe taking a shower. Picking up the file that their father had given them, Frank went downstairs to have breakfast and read up on Jack Reynolds. Twenty minutes later, Joe found Frank sitting at the small dining table in the kitchen. Frank looked up when Joe walked in and frowned at his brother. “Isn’t that my new shirt?” “Yeah, sorry, I was going to ask you if I could borrow it but weren’t in your room.” “Joe, why are you wearing my shirt?!” “I couldn’t find anything nice to wear!” “What do you mean you couldn’t…Joe, Mom just bought you…us, new clothes for school!” “I know but I look really good in this shirt! Don’t you think?” Joe said with a wicked grin on his face. Although Frank wouldn’t admit it, the light burgundy shirt did show off Joe’s more muscular physique. Frank silently handed Joe some of the papers he had already read. “Here’s a small biography on Jack Reynolds and the company he runs. Also some info on his son, Shane, and Miracle’s medical records. Poor kid, I’m amazed she’s survived this long. She’s on the A list to receive a heart transplant.” “A list, isn’t that like the top priority?” “Yeah, but she’s been on it for a few years now.” “Why? Don’t hospitals do transplants all the time?” Joe asked. “Yes they do, honey,” replied Laura Hardy. “The problem is not enough donors. Plus, the donor and recipient need to have a blood match. The chance of survival is high enough without adding the risk of rejection.” Joe fell silent as he digested the information his mother had given him. “Um…what does Dad think about the threats?” he asked Frank, deciding to change the subject. “He thinks it might be someone Mr. Reynolds either fired or who has a grudge against him.” “Joe, hurry and finish your breakfast. You boys will have to finish discussing your case on the way to school. Hurry now, or you’ll be late,” Laura said. ***** Shane sat in the dining room glaring at his father. “I still think you should tell her! At least that way she’d be on her guard!” “No, this is the best way, Shane. It would cause her too much stress, and she doesn’t need that.” “Dad, you have to stop treating her like some fragile piece of china!” “You don’t understand, Shane!” Jack stood up to leave. “I don’t understand!” Shane jumped up and ran to stand in front of his father. “I understand more than you think! Do you think that I never worried whenever she got sick? Or had to go in for those catheterizations? Always afraid that the doctors would find something else wrong? Always wondering if she was going to come back home?” Looking at his son’s tear-stained face, Jack realized that Shane had suffered through the same fears he had. He pulled Shane into a hug; the two men held each other in a tight embrace. “I’m sorry, son, I…I was so caught up in my fears that I never thought how it affected you.” “It’s okay, Dad. I know that you care for me…you just did what you thought was best.” Taking a step back, Jack, still holding Shane by the shoulders, smiled at his son. “How did get so compassionate? Any other person would be resentful.” “Thank my ex-roommate, Tom. He has an older sister who has cerebral palsy and Downs-syndrome. He told me that I should feel lucky that Miracle is still here and how I shouldn’t complain because at least I was healthy enough to do all the things I wanted to do. That it was Miracle who was getting the raw end of the deal called Life.” “Shane…are you sure you want to transfer out of Penn? You know if Miracle finds out that you left there just to watch out for her…” “I’m positive, Dad, and I can handle Miracle! She can never stay mad at me for long.” “I still think she should take the limo.” “Dad, do you not want her to have a social life at that school?! It’s bad enough that she’s going to be the ‘new kid’, without you adding the limo into the mix! I can drop her off on my way to the University. Why do you think all my classes are scheduled after eight a.m.?” “I did wonder about that. Okay, you take her to school and I’ll have Minerva pick her up…in the town car, not the limo!” ***** Joe was closing the door to the van when he saw her. He thought she still looked the same. “There she is, Frank.” “How do you know that’s her?” “Because, she always reminded me of one of Aunt Gertrude’s porcelain ballerina dolls. So pale and fragile looking, but beautiful.” Frank glanced over at Joe. Was he falling for Miracle? “That must be Shane dropping her off,” Joe quickened his steps. ***** Shane stood by his sister’s side as they looked at Bayport High School. Shane gave Miracle’s shoulder a light squeeze. “You going to be okay, squirt?” “Yeah, I think so. Shane, could you give me some money for lunch?” “I thought cook packed you a lunch?” “She did…you do not want to know what she made! Please, Shane…I don’t want anyone giving me weird looks when I open up a container of whatever salt-free concoction cook made!” “Man, the things I do for you, brat!” Shane said as he took out his wallet. “Hi Miracle! Do you remember me? I’m…” “Joe Hardy! How could I forget you! You kept coming back to play with me at my birthday party!” Shane smiled at Joe as he handed Miracle some money. “Say, Joe, how is the food here? Miracle didn’t want to take her lunch.” Joe made a face. “I don’t blame her, I remember some of the food she had to eat. You couldn’t taste it!” By now Frank had joined the small group. He shook Shane’s hand. “Don’t worry, Shane. We got a new principal last year and she’s made a lot of changes in the cafeteria. She couldn’t get rid of the soda machine but the food has gotten better and healthier.” “Yeah, but you can still taste it!” Joe said as he winked at Miracle.
