THE CHAPTERS |
As Joe talked with Miracle, teasing and making her laugh, Shane marveled at how the blonde boy easily took his sister’s book bag without making Miracle suspicious that he was trying to coddle her. Joe started to lead Miracle up the school steps; she turned and waved at Shane. “Amazing,” said Shane as he shook his head in disbelief. “How does he do it?” “You mean, how does he charm everyone?” Frank asked. “Yeah…You don’t know my sister, she hates to be coddled! If I had tried to take her book bag and carry it for her! So how does he do it – What’s his secret?” Frank shrugged. “I think he was born that way!” Becoming serious, Shane turned to Frank. “She doesn’t know about the threats. Or that you and your brother are watching over her.” “Why hasn’t she been told?” “My dad..*sigh*…He’s afraid if she knew, the stress would be too much of a strain for her.” Thinking of the medical file, Frank could understand but he also thought that Miracle should know she might be in danger. “What do you know about these phone calls?” “Not too much really. The only reason I know about them is purely by accident.” Seeing the puzzled look on Frank’s face, Shane went on to explain: “I was in my dad’s den looking for a book I needed for some research I was doing…anyway, my dad’s cell phone was on top of his desk and it rang…only his important business associates know his cell number…I didn’t want him missing an important call so I answered…Next thing I know, this creepy voice is telling me that if I or rather Dad, doesn’t give them the money they deserved then Miracle would disappear again.” “Money they deserved? They actually said Miracle would disappear again?” “Yeah, that’s exactly what the voice said…Dad walked in a few minutes later, but the caller had hung up, and I confronted him about it.” “I don’t remember seeing that in Dad’s file…I wonder if he knows about that.” “Is it important that he should know? Oh…wait a minute! You’re thinking about when she was kidnapped, right?!” “Yeah, but they could have read about it in the paper – but still…it could be a clue. Don’t worry about your sister; we won’t let her know anything…unless your Dad wants her to.” “Thanks, Frank. I better go or I’m going to be late!” Just then, the first bell rang. “That’s my signal to leave too!”
Walking down the crowded hallway with Miracle, Joe stayed close to her side, trying to prevent anyone from bumping into her. He showed Miracle where her locker was. When she showed Joe her class schedule, they found that they were in the same first class, English. “You have Trig with Mr. Sinclair, that’s on my way towards my Spanish classroom.” Joe commented. “Does this mean you’ll be walking me to class?” Miracle asked, a mischievous smile on her face. “Leave it to Joe Hardy to find the prettiest girl!” Tony Prito, his dark brown eyes twinkling with laughter, smiled at his friend and Miracle. “Hi, Tony. Miracle, meet Tony Prito – but whatever you do…don’t believe a word he says about me!” Pushing Joe aside, Tony took Miracle’s hand. Lifting her hand up to his lips, he kissed the back and smiled. “It makes my heart sing, meeting a pretty girl such as yourself.” Joe let out a small groan and rolled his eyes upwards. Miracle couldn’t help but giggle. The first bell rang just then, and Joe put his arm around Miracle’s shoulders. “Sorry Casanova, but you wouldn’t want us to be late for class?!” “Bye, Tony, it was nice meeting you!” Miracle waved at Tony as they walked away.
Miracle was glad that Joe hadn’t asked her why she didn’t have a gym class. She didn’t want anyone to know about her heart condition. As she stood in front of her locker, putting away the books she wouldn’t need, Miracle felt very happy. “How do you like Bayport High so far?” Miracle turned to find Joe standing next to her; his sapphire blue eyes seemed to sparkle as he smiled at her. “I like it a lot! Everyone has been so nice to me.” “Did you need a ride home?” “No, thanks; my nur…Minerva is picking me up.” ‘Minerva Adams, the nurse.’ Joe thought. “Oh, okay. Come on, I’ll walk you out.” Noticing that Miracle looked a little paler than she had that morning, Joe reached out to take her hand. He grabbed her hand slightly above her wrist. Placing two fingers on her wrist, below the thumb, Joe quickly checked her pulse, glancing quickly at his watch and noting the position of the second hand. Although faint, Joe was satisfied that her heart wasn’t beating too slowly. Pretending to check the time, Joe figured out her pulse rate. When Joe took her hand, Miracle felt her heart beat a little faster. This is what she always dreamed of! Going to school like a normal young teen. Going out with a cute boy…and Joe Hardy was definitely cute! Then an overwhelming sadness descended on her. She couldn’t let Joe fall for her, it wouldn’t be fair. Miracle knew that she would have to tell Joe about her health. But not today! Today she wanted this good feeling to last.
