CHAPTER 17

As Frank raced toward the mall, he would glance over at Joe occasionally. Feelings of anger and guilt were waging a war over his emotions. Anger at himself for not listening to Joe and waiting for the girls at the mall as he suggested. Guilt for the pain and worry he was now causing him.

“Why isn’t Minerva with them? She’s supposed to be by their side at all times!!” Joe ranted angrily as he pounded on the dashboard with his fist.

“Maybe she got sidetracked. Who’s to say that it’s only one person tailing them!” Frank replied as he tried to soothe his brother.

“Or maybe she’s part of the threat.”

Frank didn’t reply. He had the same thought.

True to his word, five minutes later they arrived at the mall. Frank let Joe off near an entrance that was close to the girls’ location. As Frank started to pull away to find a parking space, he hesitated for a moment. Making up his mind, Frank put the van in Park and ran after Joe. Finding out who was following Callie and Miracle was more important than finding a parking space for the van!

Joe had just spotted the girls when he heard a familiar voice call out to him.

“Joe, wait up!”

Turning around, he smiled as he saw Frank running towards him. “Callie and Miracle are sitting over there, next to the fake palm tree!”

Although Saturdays at the mall were normally Mr. Pizza’s busiest day, once Tony had explained to his father about someone following Callie and another girl, Mr. Prito gave him permission to help Biff find out who that person was, and to protect Callie and the younger girl.

Tony and Biff decided it would be best if they sat closer to the girls. While Tony took the escalator down to their floor, Biff took the stairs located at the other end. When Tony was halfway down he saw the young man suddenly bolt over towards Callie and Miracle. Without even thinking, Tony sprinted down the escalator, and caught sight of the Hardy brothers.

“Frank, Joe          ! He’s going after them!”

Hearing Tony’s cry, Callie turned her head and gasped when she saw the tall, skinny young man suddenly make a grab for Miracle.

“Let her go!” Callie screamed as she hit the assailant with her purse.

Miracle was too stunned to move, as she saw a young man with light brown hair run up to her and Callie. She felt him take her arm and begin pulling her up from the bench. Suddenly Callie was yelling and hitting the guy with her purse.

Shoving Callie to the ground, the young man pulled Miracle away from the bench.

“Let her go,” Tony growled.

Standing 5’10”, Tony Prito was considered the smallest member of the group. His wiry build hid his physical strength; his upper arms were strong from working summers at his father’s now defunct construction business. He kept his upper body strength with boxing; Tony had just won his second Golden Gloves trophy last summer.

“I believe my friend told you to let her go.” Joe spoke softly, though there was a menacing tone to his voice.

As Biff and Frank came to stand by Tony and Joe’s side, Miracle’s assailant knew he was outnumbered. A small smile appeared on his face.

“Sure thing…HERE!”

Miracle let out a scream as she was suddenly pushed forward. She collided into Tony who managed to catch her but lost his balance and the two fell down to the floor.

Once he shoved Miracle away, the brown-haired man turned and ran. Joe quickly chased after him, with Frank and Biff right behind him.

“What’s going on here? You…which one are you? What are you doing on the floor with my patient?”

“Tony, I’m Tony Prito…and some goon pushed Miracle and I caught her!”

While Tony explained what happened, Minerva helped Miracle off the floor and began to check her pulse.

“I knew coming here was a bad idea! I told your father but he wouldn’t listen,” Minerva mumbled angrily. “Well, I’m calling for the car and we’re going home.”

“You can’t!” Callie protested.

“Excuse me? And why not?!”

“Because we have to call and report this to the police. Miracle was almost kidnapped!” Tony answered.

“Nonsense, you don’t know that’s what this…this boy had in mind!” Satisfied that Miracle was okay, Minerva took out her cell phone.

“Where were you, Minerva?” asked Miracle.

“Yeah,” said Callie. “You were just a few feet away from us from the moment we stepped into the mall! Then suddenly you disappeared and then Miracle is almost kidnapped.”

Minerva glared at Callie. “Just what are you implying?”

“Oh nothing, but I’m sure Mr. Reynolds might find it very interesting that you disappeared and then refused to report an attempted kidnapping.” Callie crossed her arms as she returned Minerva’s glare with one of her own.

 *****

Joe was angry and disgusted; they had lost the would-be kidnapper! Walking back with Biff and Frank, they saw what looked to be a stand-off between Callie and Minerva Adams. Glancing over at Frank, Joe gave him a questioning look.

“Let’s go find out what this is about,” Frank said.

Minerva saw the Hardy brothers walking their way. She sighed in defeat. “Fine, I’m calling the police right now.”

“That’s okay, I already did that,” said Tony. “They should be here in a few minutes.”

Joe sat down next to Miracle. “How are you doing – feeling okay?”

“I’m fine! I’m just worried what my dad is going to do when he finds out someone almost kidnapped me! You know Joe, I vaguely remember when I was kidnapped the first time. But I was so scared I can hardly remember it! All I do remember was how over-protective my dad got!”

Looking over at Frank, Joe knew he was thinking along the same wave-length. Miracle needed to know about the threats made against her.

 *****

“Did he get her?” the young woman asked.

“No, the idiot moved too soon! We’re going to have to do this ourselves if we want it done right,” her male companion replied.

“You’re right. I think it’s time we let her know what kind of danger she’s in. I’ll leave a note in her locker…that should really stir things up!”

The young man’s eyes gleamed with excitement at the thought.
