CHAPTER 17

Two hours later found the Hardys sitting in Jack Reynolds’ den along with their  father. Callie was upstairs with Miracle in her room. Jack stared at Fenton with an incredulous expression on his face.

“I cannot believe that you think Minerva is behind these threats! She’s been with the family for ten years!”

“Jack, I’ve already told you my suspicions that the threats were being made by someone you know.”

“But Minerva loves Miracle!”

“Then where was she? Why didn’t she want to call the police?” Joe asked.

“Can I say something in my defense?” Minerva stood just inside the doorway. She glared at the Hardys as she walked inside the room.

“Minerva, no one is accusing you…” Jack began to explain.

“Oh really? That’s not how it sounded to me!”

“Ms. Adams,” Fenton spoke up. “My sons are just concerned about your disappearance. Especially when Callie told them that you kept a close watch on her and Miracle – and then your refusal to call the police.”

Ignoring Mr. Hardy, Minerva stared at Mr. Reynolds while she spoke.

“Mr. Reynolds, I was paying for a blouse and didn’t see Callie and Miracle leave the store. As soon as I realized they had left, I went searching for the girls. And the only reason I didn’t want to involve the police…I was afraid Miracle would find out about the threatening phone calls. I knew you didn’t want that to happen.”

“What threatening phone calls?”

Jack looked up to find his daughter standing at the doorway, Callie by her side.

“Jack,” Fenton spoke softly. “She needs to know.”

 *****

Fenton had told Frank and Joe to take Callie home and then head for home themselves. So it wasn’t until Monday morning that Joe found out how Miracle took the news.

When Shane saw Joe walking towards them, he tried to signal to him not to speak to Miracle.

“Hi Miracle, glad to see you here. I was afraid your dad wouldn’t let you come back.”

“Why, were you afraid you wouldn’t get paid? After all, that’s why you’re being so friendly to me, isn’t it? Because my dad hired you to be my friend?”

Joe was taken aback by the anger he heard in her voice.

“That’s not true! I’m your friend because I like you.”

“Bye Shane, thanks for the ride.” Miracle then made her way slowly up the school steps.

As Joe watched Miracle climb up the stairs, he felt someone squeeze his shoulder.

“Don’t let her get to you. She’s not really mad at you, you’re just a lot easier for her to yell at. Man, is she upset with Dad!”

“Thanks Shane, but I really need to talk to her. I meant what I said, I do like her…”

Joe quickly ran inside the school building. Frank, who had seen Shane comfort his brother, watched sadly as Joe ran to catch Miracle.

Joe was glad to see that Miracle was still at her locker but as he drew near he sensed that something was wrong.

“Miracle, I’m really sorry that we didn’t tell you about the phone calls. But your dad…Miracle?”

Turning her head slowly towards Joe, she looked at him with fear etched on her face. Joe’s eyes went wide with worry when he saw how pale her face had become. The bluish tint that outlined her lips seemed to become more prominent. Then he noticed how Miracle’s breathing seemed too rapid. She seemed to be gasping for air.

“Hey Joe! Hey Miracle, glad to see you didn’t let a little attempted kidnapping make you miss out on another wonderful day of school!”

“Tony,” Joe said, trying not to panic. “Go get Shane, I think he’s still outside…Tell him Miracle is in trouble!”

Without another word, Tony turned and ran out the building.

Shane was just getting into his car when Tony came crashing out of the school.

“Shane, something’s wrong with Miracle!”

“Call 911!” Shane yelled at Frank as he ran to follow Tony.

Joe helped Miracle down to the floor. With her eyes closed shut, Miracle silently handed Joe a slip of paper.

“Hey squirt, if you didn’t want to come to school, you could have just told Dad you weren’t feeling well. You didn’t have to pull this drama scene.” Shane knelt down beside his sister, gently stroking her hair.

“Excuse me, let me through please.” The school nurse came striding over. As she knelt down, she scrutinized Shane. “Who are you? I know you’re not one of the students here.”

“I’m her brother, Shane Reynolds.”

She gave him a curt nod as she took Miracle’s pulse. “There’s a lot of fluttering, can’t get a good reading. Can someone tell me what happened here?”

“I saw her standing in front of her locker…it looked like she was having a hard time breathing.” Joe answered.

“Miracle, are you in pain? Does your chest hurt?”

Miracle gave a slight nod.

“On a scale of one to ten…ten being the worst pain you ever felt…how bad does it feel?”

“Si…six…feels…like…a…six.”

A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived.

 *****

Frank was worried about Shane driving to the hospital. He convinced the young man that he and Joe could take him there. While Shane called his father, Joe unfolded the paper that Miracle had given him. As he read the note, he could feel himself growing angry.

“Frank, I need a plastic baggie.”

“What makes you think I have one on me?”

“Because you always believe in being prepared.”

“Um…Shane, there should be one in the glove compartment.” Frank mumbled.

Glancing curiously at Frank, Shane opened up the glove compartment and found a small sandwich baggie inside. Taking it out he handed it over to Joe.

“Joe, why’d you need it?”

“Just before you two arrived, Miracle handed me a slip of paper. These guys are playing dirty…they sent her a threatening note.”

Joe quietly passed the note over to Frank.
