As Callie stood in the food line, she heard the wild tales spreading around the cafeteria. Everyone was talking about what happened to Miracle that morning. “Man, can you believe these bozos?” said Tony angrily. “Yeah, but don’t let them bother you. I can’t believe some of the wild things they’re saying!” “Oh, like the one about Miracle overdosing on coke? I was there, that’s not what happened!” “What exactly did happen?” Callie asked. While Tony was telling Callie what he had seen, they didn’t pay attention to the young woman sitting at the cash resister. They didn’t notice how she listened to every word that was being said. ‘Our little note must have really scared her…Good, maybe now “Daddy Warbucks” will pay up! Poor Aunt Minerva…she doesn’t realize what a big help she has been in all this!’ “That’ll be a dollar twenty-five. Thanks, you have a nice day.” ***** Minerva sat in the waiting area, anxiously watching her boss pace the floor. She was filled with guilt. She had lied to Mr. Reynolds, but she felt as if she didn’t have a choice. Minerva looked over at Joe Hardy and wondered if and when he was going to remember that she wasn’t carrying a bag when they had left the mall. But how could she tell Mr. Reynolds that her niece had distracted her that day? No, she couldn’t say anything, not unless she wanted Mr. Reynolds to find out her secret. “What’s taking them so long?” Jack said to no one in particular. “Dad, she hasn’t been here that long.” “How do I even know a doctor is looking at her? What if she was pushed back?” “Dad, Dr. Moore is with her. I heard them paging him when we arrived.” “Are you sure? Are you sure he’s with her?” Shane smiled. “Why don’t you ask him yourself?” Dr. Charles Moore stood over 6’2” tall in height. In his early sixties, he appeared much younger. What little hair he had left was a silver-gray in color; his light blue eyes seemed to twinkle with glee. “Jack, good to see you, I just wish it was under better circumstances.” Dr. Moore gave Frank and Joe a curious once-over. “Oh, Charles, let me introduce you to a couple of Miracle’s friends. This is Frank and Joe Hardy. How is she, Charles?” Dr. Moore gave Frank and Joe a small nod and smile; he then turned his attention to Jack. “She’s resting right now and then she’ll be moved into the cardiac wing.” “What happened? Joe said that she couldn’t breathe.” “That’s to be expected when you go into an atrial fibrillation, but I did tell you this may happen when we diagnosed the cardiomyopathy.” “What? When did you tell me this!” “Didn’t Miracle tell you after her last exam?” Jack sighed. “No, apparently she failed to mention this.” “I knew I should have called you. But she was so insistent that she was going to tell you…*sigh*…let’s have a seat.” Dr. Moore led Jack over to some chairs. The two men sat down, along with Shane, Joe and Frank. “On her last catheterization and X-rays, I could see that her heart was inflamed. A virus may have gone into her heart causing this, I’m not sure. The inflammation is what caused the cardiomyopathy and weakened her heart considerably more than before. I explained to Miracle that this could cause her to have the atrial fibrillation, or a-fib for short. Basically what happens is, the upper chambers of her heart get an overload of electrical impulses. This causes the upper chamber to beat much faster than the lower chamber. She may suffer some chest pain, difficulty in breathing, profuse sweating and some dizziness.” “Is that all?!” Shane commented. “Is it treatable?” asked Jack. “Yes, but with Miracle…normally I would try and treat her with some of the medications that are out there…but we’ve seen what happens when she can’t handle some medications.” “What else is there you can do for her?” Joe wanted to know. “We could use electrical cardioversion and literally shock the heart back into rhythm. But before I did that, I would have to make sure that Miracle didn’t have any blood clots around the heart.” “Tell me what I have to sign and do what you have to do,” Jack said, his voice filled with worry. He then turned to Frank and Joe. “Tell your father I no longer need his services. I’m going to give them what they want! I don’t care how much money it’s going to cost me! I’m not going to let them hurt my daughter!” “Mr. Reynolds you can’t do that!” Frank argued. “What’s to stop them from doing this again?” “I don’t care. I’m paying them whatever they want!” ***** Minerva had wanted to stay at the hospital, but Mr. Reynolds had sent her home. Since she lived in a small house at the Reynolds estate, Minerva walked in to find her niece and nephew sitting on the couch watching TV. “Hi Aunt Minerva. Is it true that Miracle collapsed at school? All the kids were talking about it in the cafeteria.” “Yes, it’s true. And to make matters worse, Mr. Reynolds fired Mr. Hardy. Poor Miracle is at the hospital without any protection.” The two young adults turned towards each other and smiled. This was the chance they had been waiting for. ***** But Joe and Frank had no intention of leaving Miracle without protection. They conveniently forgot to tell Fenton that he was no longer needed. Instead, they got hold of their friends and explained that they needed their help.
