THE CHAPTERS |
The alarm in Frank’s watch beeped, he glanced at it and saw it was time to call Fenton. He stopped and took out his cell phone and frowned. “We must be pretty far down…I’m not getting a signal,” he told Callie. “I hope Mom and Dad don’t start to worry.” “I’m sure they’ll figure this might happen,” Callie replied in a soothing voice. “Yeah, you’re probably right. I hope we reach the end of this tunnel soon, though.” “You and me both!”Frank smiled and leaned over to kiss her cheek but Callie tilted her head so he could softly kiss her lips. “Never knew you were so sneaky!” Frank said when the kiss ended. “Oh, I’m full of surprises!” teased Callie, then she became serious. “Come on; let’s go find Joe and Vanessa.” Taking Callie’s hand, Frank aimed his light straight ahead and started walking. Ten minutes later they came to the end of the tunnel, finding a ladder bolted on the wall. “Normally I’d say ‘ladies first’, but I think it would be best if I went first.” Frank tucked the flashlight in his belt. “And normally I would protest, but…I think that’s a good idea!”“Stay a couple of steps behind me.” Frank started up the ladder; Callie waited for a minute and soon followed.
Fenton kept glancing at the dashboard clock, then at his watch. Frank should had called by now. He was hoping that Laura hadn’t noticed how much time had passed. “Something’s wrong,” sighed Laura. ‘No such luck!’ thought Fenton. “What do you mean? We’re doing fine – we’ll be picking up Joe’s signal soon.” “That’s not what I meant and you know it!”Although he didn’t turn to look at her, Fenton could just feel the glare that Laura was giving him. He decided it would be best to be truthful with her. “If you mean that Frank is late in calling – then yes he is. But I’m sure there’s a logical explanation.” “Yes, there is – Frank and Callie somehow got themselves captured!”Fenton had had the same thought but didn’t want to tell Laura that. A part of him was hoping that Frank was having problems with his phone. “I bet he’s out of range!” Fenton suddenly exclaimed. “What?!”“The tunnel we found – it probably went so deep into the ground that Frank can’t get a signal on his cell phone!” “Do you really think so?” asked Laura, her voice filled with hope. Fenton took her hand, squeezing it softly. “I’m positive.” ***** Frank reached the top of the ladder; he found a small ledge and a door to his right. He stepped onto the ledge, then helped Callie up, having her stand behind him before he attempted to open the door. He turned the doorknob, unsurprised to find it was locked. Reaching into his back pocket, Frank took out his lock pick kit. “Here, hold this while I search for the right pick.” Frank gave Callie the flashlight. She held the flashlight so Frank could see, and he set to work. A short time later they heard the soft click of the lock. Frank told Callie to turn off the flashlight then he slowly opened the door. He walked into what appeared to be a linen closet. There were bed sheets, pillow cases and towels all folded and sitting on shelves. Frank moved further in, signaling to Callie that it was safe to enter. Spying a couple of white lab coats hanging from a hook on the door, Frank took them and gave one to Callie. “Put this on – it looks like we’re in a hospital or something.” “It’s a good thing I wore jeans today,” said Callie as she put the coat on. “Yeah, we could pass as medical students!” Frank cautiously opened the door that would lead them out into the hallway. He quickly closed the door when he heard footsteps coming their way. Callie stood close as they watched the doorknob begin to turn. Thinking fast, Callie threw her arms around Frank’s neck. The door opened and the lights were switched on. There was a gasp and then an angry voice: “I’m really tired finding students making out in my storage and linen closets!” Frank and Callie pulled away from each other and faced a very angry RN. The older woman glared at them as Callie grabbed Frank’s hand and mumbled an apology as they hurriedly walked past. Callie tried not to laugh as she almost ran towards the elevators. Frank glanced over his shoulder at the angry nurse as they waited for the elevator to arrive. He practically pushed Callie inside once it did. Pressing the button for the first floor, he leaned against the wall, grinning at Callie, who could no longer hold in her laughter. “Good save! I have to remember to tell Joe about it!”“Well it was his idea!” Callie giggled when she saw the confused look on Frank’s face. “I just thought…what would Joe do?...Then it hit me! Kiss Frank!” “On second thought, maybe I won’t tell him. We wouldn’t want him to get a swelled head!” Reaching their floor, Frank and Callie walked out into the lobby; Frank suddenly pulled Callie behind a large plant. “What’s wrong?!” she whispered. “That guy…the one in the dark suit with a buzz cut. Joe saw him with Miss Green! He drew Dad a composite sketch of him.” “Do you think he’s involved with Joe and Vanessa’s disappearance?” Callie took a peek at the man. Two nurses walked past Frank and Callie, conducting an interesting conversation. “So, did you get in trouble for buzzing those three loonies out?”“Nah, I just told them that they looked normal and were wearing white coats like the doctors! Plus, one had on a doctor’s badge!” replied the second nurse. “Can you believe the cute blonde guy lifted a student’s wallet?”The two nurses laughed uproariously. Frank couldn’t believe what he heard. The cute blonde had to be Joe! He saw Buzz Cut stuff his cell phone in his pocket when he was finished with his call. The man then left the building, and Frank and Callie followed. Frank, however, wasn’t sure how they were going to be able to continue the pursuit – they didn’t have a vehicle. As he watched the man get into a car, Frank took out his cell phone. Using the camera on the phone he took a picture of the license plate. Then he called Fenton. ***** Joe’s fingers were growing numb but he continued to work on Vanessa’s bonds. He heard Vanessa give a little gasp. “You’re doing it, Joe! I can feel the rope loosening!” she whispered excitedly. “Try and pull at the ropes!”“Okay!”As Vanessa did what Joe suggested, they heard a groan coming from the Gray Man. Vanessa glanced over at the Network agent; she had been worried about him. The sound of him falling into the trunk had her thinking that the agent had been hit in the head just like the bus driver. Suddenly Vanessa felt her hands pull apart – she was free! She quickly turned around and began working on freeing Joe. Arthur Gray rolled onto his back and winced from the pain in the back of his head. He slowly turned his head and opened his eyes, catching a glimpse of two shadowy figures. It appeared that one of them was trying to free the other person. “Joe…Vanessa?” croaked out the Gray Man. “Glad to have you back,” said Joe, finally able to break free from his bonds. The teens crawled over to the Network agent; Joe helped him to sit up and began to untie the ropes around Gray’s wrists. He soon had Gray free, then helped him to stand when the agent tried to get up. “Do you know where we are?” Joe asked the Gray Man. “I think so – I think we’re in one of the Assassins’ half-way houses.” “Half-way house – isn’t that where the courts send parolees?” asked Vanessa. “Not the same thing – this is used to hold captured Network agents or kidnapped dignitaries before they’re killed or sent to a prison.” “Oh, wonderful!” sighed Joe. They grew quiet when they heard a door opening, then footsteps. Gray suddenly sagged against Joe; Vanessa immediately moved to the other side to help support him. A bright light came on, causing the teens to blink their eyes rapidly as two men came towards them. “You really hit him good, Andy!” laughed one Assassin. Suddenly Gray’s body jerked up – he kicked out his leg and hit the Assassin’s chin. Joe and Vanessa were caught by surprise and had stepped back when Gray moved. As the first Assassin went down, the Gray Man struck Andy with a karate chop to the neck. Acting quickly, Joe bent down and grabbed the rope that had held Gray. He turned the first Assassin agent onto his stomach and tied his hands behind his back. Vanessa ran to get the ropes that had bound her and Joe. She gave them to Joe who helped Gray tie up Andy. “I hope there aren’t more of them!” Vanessa said. “There won’t be – let’s get out of here, and quick!” Gray replied, and led the teens towards the stairs.
