THE CHAPTERS |
When Fenton was finished getting the information from Mike, the Hispanic teen who found Joe’s cell phone, he drove to the Riverview Mental hospital where Frank and Callie were waiting. He found them at the bus stop. Frank told Fenton about seeing Buzz Cut at the hospital and overhearing two nurses talking about three patients who had escaped. “From the description of one of the patients – I think it was Joe!”“I’m taking you, Callie and your mother back to the hotel. I have a friend who now works at the San Antonio police department. I’m sure he’ll run the plates for me but don’t be surprised if it’s from a rental.” “Dad, I don’t want to go back to the hotel! Let me help you!” Frank didn’t like the pleading tone in his voice. “No, Frank – if we were in Bayport I’d have you along…but we’re not. I need you to stay with your mother!” Frank crossed his arms and stared out the window. His jaw was clenched in anger. Callie lightly touched his arm but Frank wasn’t in the mood to be comforted.
Several hours later Frank was lying on his bed staring up at the ceiling. As Fenton had predicted, the car was a rental used by Astro Computer Inc. – which turned out to be a bogus company. Fenton had flown out to Washington, D.C. to speak with someone in the Network agency. Frank couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about Joe and Vanessa. If they had managed to escape why hadn’t they returned? Why hadn’t Joe called? Had they gotten hurt and were unable to get to a phone? Frank sighed then glanced at his watch. It was almost one a.m. – he needed to get some sleep. Already dressed in his pajamas, Frank got off the bed and pulled back the covers when someone knocked on his door. Almost running to the door, Frank flung it open to find Callie – wearing her bathrobe – standing in the doorway. “Callie – is everything all right?” Frank stepped aside to let Callie in the room. “I couldn’t sleep and I see you can’t either. I’m really worried, Frank. Where could Joe and Vanessa be?!” “I don’t know – I was thinking about that myself. I wish Dad had let me go with him! I feel so useless here!” Frank ranted with frustration. “I know your mom is glad you’re here and I know that I definitely am too.” Frank smiled at Callie, happy that she was with him. Then he let out a huge yawn. “I guess I better get some sleep.” He took Callie’s hand to escort her out but she pulled him back. “I was going to knock on your mom’s door but I hadn’t realized how late it was. I don’t want to stay in that room by myself – would you mind if I slept here?” “Um…” Frank blushed a bright red. “I…uh…I guess you could sleep in Joe’s bed.” “Thanks!” sighed Callie. She removed her robe to reveal that she wore a dark T-shirt with a unicorn on the front and shorts with stars. Frank turned off the light and got into bed. As he pulled the covers up he suddenly realized why Callie was afraid to be alone in her room. He turned on his side so he could look at her through the semi-darkness of the room. “You know – you don’t have to be afraid that the Assassins will come after you. Vanessa was just at the wrong place at the right time.” “Thanks,” replied Callie. She stared in Frank’s direction as he got more comfortable, and was just able to see him give her one last smile before closing his eyes. It wasn’t until she was sure that he was asleep that she softly whispered: “I wasn’t worried about me.” ***** They had been walking for about an hour when an old blue truck drove up. Driving the truck was an elderly man wearing a cowboy hat, a light blue T-shirt and jeans. Sitting next to the man was a black and white mutt. “You folks need a ride into town? If you don’t mind riding in the back, I don’t mind taking you.” Gray studied the old man then smiled. “Why thank you, we’d appreciate it!” “I’d let one of you ride up front...but Bessie doesn’t like sharing the front seat!” Gray chuckled before he jumped in the back of the truck. Joe helped Vanessa in. The elderly man slid open the back window. “Name’s Jacob – Jacob Jenkins.” “I’m…Tom Smith and this is my daughter Virginia and her boyfriend…Fred.” Vanessa, who was sitting close to Joe, buried her face in his shoulder, her shoulders shaking with laughter. Joe gave Jacob a wan smile. Once Jacob turned back around to drive away, Joe glared over at Gray who smiled back at him. ***** As Gray, Vanessa and Joe were heading away from the Assassin half-way house, Bruce Buchannan and Linda Green were driving up to the house. When they entered the house they heard a muffled cry for help. Linda glanced over at Bruce, her eyes wide with fear. “You don’t think…?”“I don’t have to think…I already know!” growled Bruce as he headed straight towards the basement door. The Assassins ran down the stairs, the cries for help louder now. Bruce let out a few choice words as Linda ran over to the two bound men. She was about to cut the ropes off one when Bruce placed his hand on her arm. “Stop right there!” He glared at the two men. “Why are you still alive? This is the second time they’ve escaped from you….This organization does not tolerate imbeciles!” “It wasn’t our fault!” protested Andy. “Gray tricked us…we thought he was badly injured the way those kids were holding him up!” “You idiots!” sneered Bruce. “That’s why Gray is the best in his field! That’s why the Assassins want him killed!” Linda, still holding a small knife in her hand glanced from Bruce to Andy. “You…you don’t seriously want them to…”“Yes I do! They’re Assassins – they know the consequences of their actions! Don’t you, gentlemen?” Linda turned away when Andy and his partner bit down on their fake teeth. “Let’s go – we have two fugitives to find.” As Bruce brushed past her, Linda looked down at the two dead men and shuddered. ***** The town where Jacob dropped Gray, Joe and Vanessa was a small dusty Mecca. It consisted of one drug store, a clothing store with a ‘Going Out of Business’ sign on the window and a small diner. On the other side of the street was the post office, the sheriff’s office and a hotel. Joe ran over to the sheriff’s office only to find that there was no one there. The building was locked and it appeared that no one had been there for a very long time. Joe hurried back to the truck. “Do you know when the sheriff will be back?” he asked Jacob. “We haven’t had a sheriff here going on…ten years. Don’t have the money to keep one.” Jacob eyed Joe warilyas Gray spoke up: “We just moved here and ‘Fred’ here is from a big city.” “Well…if you folks are hungry, Mona’s is open for business. She makes a delicious pecan pie!” Thanking Jacob for the ride, Gray, Joe and Vanessa walked towards the diner. “How exactly are we supposed to pay for breakfast? I don’t think there’s anyone here whose pocket you can pick!” said Vanessa . “Not to worry, while you and Fred here were tying up the other Assassin, I…” Joe burst out laughing. “You took money from an Assassin?!”“He didn’t seem to need it. I don’t think they’re paid very well – he only had a twenty in his wallet.” Walking inside the diner, Vanessa glanced at the menu above the counter. “From the prices they charge here, I’d say we have more than enough.” While placing their order to go, Gray found out that a train stopped every day at one o’clock. Flirting with the waitress, Joe found out that they were in the town of Eagle Pass. After getting their food, the small group headed for the railroad tracks. They planned to ride one of the empty cars back to San Antonio. The town was close to the Mexico border; it would take two days to get to San Antonio. They waited till the train started to leave, then jumped into the last car.
