THE CHAPTERS |
It took some time but Fenton finally convinced Agent Anderson that Gray had indeed been kidnapped. Finding out that Linda Green had not only cleaned out her office but vacated her apartment as well. Agent Anderson had a private plane readied, and soon Fenton, along with several Network agents, was flying to San Antonio, Texas. Agent Anderson was studying the sketch Joe had done of Bruce against a photo. “Your son is very talented. He did a remarkable job on Bruce Buchannan.” “Better known as Buzz Cut,” chuckled Fenton. “Excuse me – did you say Buzz Cut?” Anderson was smiling and then started laughing. “We didn’t know his name so my son, Joe – he kept calling him Buzz Cut.” “I like your son’s sense of humor! I just wish that…”“How much danger are they in?” asked Fenton, intently studying Anderson’s face while he waited for his reply. “I’m not going to lie to you, Mr. Hardy – Bruce Buchannan is a ruthless killer. That is the main reason he is the Assassins’ top operative. Kidnapping and killing Gray is going to move him up in the hierarchy. Capturing your son…Joe…that will make him a hero among the Assassins.” ***** Joe and Vanessa were sitting in the corner of the train car. They sat slightly apart, holding hands; it was too hot to sit any closer. Joe’s shirt was plastered to his body. He stared over at the Gray Man; other than the beads of sweat on the older man’s forehead it didn’t appear that the heat was bothering him. Joe glanced at Vanessa. Her eyes were closed but she wasn’t sleeping. He reached up and smoothed back a few loose strands of hair. Vanessa opened her eyes and turning to look at Joe, she gave him a small smile. “You know, I never considered myself a girly-girl but…I’d kill for a brush right now.” “Ah, babe – you look beautiful to me.” “You’re so sweet! If it wasn’t so hot…I’d kiss you!” Vanessa smiled sweetly at Joe. “Hey, I want my kiss!” exclaimed Joe as leaned in closer. Vanessa started to giggle as she scooted away from Joe. Gray was going to tell Joe to behave when the train suddenly lurched forward. There was a loud metallic-like screech before the train came to an abrupt stop. Gray flew forward, slamming his hands hard on the floor ; Joe and Vanessa hit their heads against the wall. “Are you two all right?” asked Gray as he stood up. “Yeah, I think so,” replied Joe. “What happened?” “I think the train derailed – we should get out of here. Just in case—” “The Assassins had anything to do with this.” Joe completed Gray’s sentence. Vanessa wanted to say that they were overreacting. No one would deliberately derail a train to search for them! Studying the expressions on Gray’s and Joe’s faces, she realized that yes, the Assassins would. Without saying a word she jumped off the train and followed the Gray Man as he ran into the woods, with Joe right beside her. ***** Frank was feeling even more frustrated. When the young man had grabbed Laura, he had really thought the Assassins were after the whole family. A small smile crossed his face as he thought about what occurred next. Taken by surprise, it took a second for Frank to react – and he was a second too late. Laura Hardy rammed her elbow into the man’s solar plexus, quickly following up by stomping on his foot. Then suddenly Callie was slamming the man into the van. The assailant’s head hit the open van door hard. The hotel driver had his cell phone out and had called the police. Soon a Park police and a Bike Patrol police officer rode their ten-speeds up to the van. The Bike Patrol officer glanced down at the unconscious man, and when he learned that Laura and Callie had caused the damage, he was impressed. It turned out that the man was just a purse thief, not an Assassin. As relieved as Frank was about that, he was disappointed too. He had hoped to get some information out of the man if he had been. Glancing at his watch, Frank got off his bed – it was time to meet Laura and Callie for dinner. He just reached the door when his cell phone rang. He didn’t recognize the number and thought about letting it go to his voice mail – and then he thought it could be Joe. “Hello – Joe is that you?!”“No, Frank – it’s me. I wanted to let you know I’m on my way back. I should arrive in a few hours. How is your mother?” “She’s fine, actually more than fine! She and Callie beat up a mugger.” “What?!”Frank couldn’t help it – he laughed. He then told Fenton about the would-be thief and his failure to nab Laura’s purse. He soon had his father laughing. “I always knew your mother was tough!”“She sure is – I felt totally useless watching her and Callie get the better of that bum!” “I’ll call you when we arrive in San Antonio. I have a few minutes – I’m going to give your mother a quick call. I’ll see you soon, son.” Ending the call with Fenton, Frank went to Callie’s room to spend some time with her, giving Laura a chance to speak with Fenton. ***** They had been walking in the woods for hours; nightfall had come, making it hard for the threesome to see where they were going. Several times Vanessa had tripped and fallen – Joe was able to catch her a few times. Her feet were hurting – she had to stop more than once to remove a stone that made its way inside her sandals. Joe had his arm around her waist, keeping her as close to him as possible. It made walking a little slow but he didn’t want her to get hurt. “Ow! I think I got something in my sandal again, darn it!” cried Vanessa in frustration. “I think we should take a break,” said Joe to Gray as he stopped to help Vanessa. The Gray Man sighed as he halted. This was their second break in the last hour. His eyesight had gotten used to the darkness, and he could just make out the shadowy figures of Joe and Vanessa. He watched as the young Hardy made sure the blonde girl was comfortable. “Joe, I need to speak with you.” “I’ll be right back,” whispered Joe, kissing Vanessa on her forehead. Vanessa hoped that Joe could see her smile as he turned to leave. She took off her sandal, massaging her foot for some relief. Joe was frowning as he walked towards the Gray Man. He didn’t know why, but the younger Hardy had a feeling he wasn’t going to like what the Network agent was going to say. And he was right.
“She’s slowing us down, Joe.” “I don’t agree – she’s been keeping up very well.” “We’ve been taking too many breaks. If she can’t keep up we need to leave—” “Don’t even finish that statement!” hissed an angry Joe. He moved closer to Gray, speaking softly but menacingly. “I am not leaving Vanessa behind! If I have to carry her the rest of the way…I will!” He turned to leave, but Gray reached out and grabbed hold of his arm. “You’re being ridiculous, Joe! The only way we can escape the Assassins is if we—” “What’s wrong with you?!” Joe shouted. He jerked his arm away, glaring at the Gray Man. “Last night you said we were the same…but you’re wrong! I am nothing like you! What kind of man is willing to abandon an innocent person just so he can survive?” Joe started to leave but turned back to face Gray once more. “If you want to leave so badly…then go! I can take care of myself and Vanessa without you! Besides…you’re the one the Assassins really want! I was just an added bonus!” Joe stomped over to Vanessa and plopped down on the ground next to her. Sensing his anger, she began to gently rub his back. She could hear his rapid breathing. Leaning close she kissed him softly on the cheek. Joe took a deep breath and let himself relax as Vanessa continued to rub his back. He wasn’t sure but he thought Gray was gone – then the agent spoke. “We’ll stay here for the night.”
