THE CHAPTERS |
The breakfast dishes were washed, dried and put away. Fenton sat at the dining table sipping coffee, a sly grin on his face. Laura went to join him, and Frank and Joe followed. “Okay, Dad – what’s with all the cloak and dagger? Just exactly where are we going on our vacation?” Joe blurted out impatiently. Fenton chuckled at his youngest son’s impatience. He glanced over at Laura and gave her a wink. “Cloak and dagger, Joe? Now I know you need a vacation – you’re starting to find mysteries where there are none!” Joe had to laugh. It was true – he and Frank had been busy solving several mysteries. He looked at his brother and saw a smile on his face. Frank reached out and ruffled Joe’s hair. “All right, Dad – can you tell us where we’re going? Even I’m starting to get impatient!” he laughed. “It’s been years since your mother and I attended this. We’re going to the Folklife Festival in San Antonio, Texas. A week filled with music, dancing and food!” Laura poked Fenton with her elbow. “You’ll also get to see different cultural events. The festival celebrates the different cultures that live in Texas. And yes, there will be lots of food for you to taste!” “Oh cool! Wait till I tell Vanessa! And Chet will be so jealous when he finds out about the different kinds of food we’ll be eating!” “I can’t wait to see the Alamo! I wonder…if I go on the internet I bet I can find a lot of other things we could see there!” Frank’s eyes gleamed with excitement. Joe ran upstairs to call Vanessa on his cell phone while Frank went to his room to surf the ‘net. It took Joe awhile to locate his cell phone, finally finding it in the front pocket of the jeans he’d worn the previous day. He plopped down on his bed and hit speed dial. “Hi babe – I was just thinking about you!”Joe smiled when he heard Vanessa’s voice. “Your psychic abilities are amazing!” His smile grew wider when she giggled. “I finally found out where we’re going on vacation and you’ll never guess!” “I bet you I can!”“Oh really? Okay, go ahead – take a wild guess!”“Let’s see….I’m getting a vision…you’re going to the Gulf…no, wait…you’re going to San Antonio!” “How did…okay who told you? It couldn’t be…did Frank send you an email?” “No…there’s this big anime convention being held in Dallas in a few weeks….I happened to mention it to your mom and she told me about your trip. Since I’ll be in Dallas with Mom, I convinced her to let me leave early and spend one week with you and then meet her in Dallas! She called your parents and they agreed! Guess who else is going….I’ll give you hint – she’s in love with Frank!” “Callie! I don’t think Frank knows that…yet!”***** Linda Green walked into her apartment. She peeled off her jacket and let it fall to the floor, then reached up and let her hair fall loose around her head. She fluffed it up as she kicked off her shoes – she hated wearing heels. Linda walked across the room and entered another small room. The room was nearly bare, with only a small computer desk, chair and computer. Sitting down, she turned on the computer and waited for it to boot up. Adjusting the web camera while she waited, her thoughts wandered. It hadn’t been easy getting into the Network but she had succeeded. Getting close to Arthur Gray had been very hard. He didn’t socialize with his fellow agents and the reputation he had made for himself didn’t make it any easier. The majority of his fellow agents were in awe of and feared him. It was sheer luck when the foreign diplomat the Gray Man was bringing in had been assassinated and Arthur Gray wounded in the line of duty. True to form, he had come back to work the next day but she could sense a crack in his armor. Linda persuaded a young intern to let her deliver files Gray had requested. She didn’t speak to him but the look of compassion she gave him….A series of audible blips brought her back to the present. She sat up straighter and waited. The outline of a head and shoulders appeared on the screen, the face blacked out. “You have anything to report?” a deep voice rumbled out of her speakers. “Everything is going as planned. We’ll be leaving on June 3rd and will arrive at 10 p.m. Central time.” “I was told you refuse to become romantically involved with him…why?” “He’s a very complicated man; that would have made him suspicious. Becoming his friend is the best way and it has gotten the results you wanted!” The silhouette was silent for a minute. “Yes it has. In a few days Arthur Gray will be dead.” ***** Fenton hung up the phone. He had been speaking with his partner Sam Radley, to give Sam the name of the hotel where the family would be staying, and the phone number. Of course he knew that if an emergency came up Sam would contact him on his cell phone. He leaned back in his chair and sighed. He needed this vacation as much as his family. Fenton was glad that he was free to go. It was a shame that his sister wouldn’t be there. But she lived her own life – maybe next time. He got up and left his office, closing and locking the door behind him. He went downstairs, following the delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. Frank and Joe were in the backyard shooting hoops. “I’m really glad that Vanessa and Callie will be going with us,” said Joe, brushing his hair away from his face. “Yeah, I am too – you need a haircut.” Frank laughed when Joe stuck his tongue out. “I just got a haircut…last month!”Frank laughed again and threw the basketball to Joe, who dribbled the ball for a bit before tossing it into the basket. The brothers weren’t playing a one-on-one game. They were just relaxing, seeing who could get the ball in the basket the most times. “So what did you find out on the internet?” asked Joe after a few minutes of silence. “You’ll like this – there’s a Six Flags and Sea World!”“Really? Cool! Think we’ll be able to go there?”“I’m sure we’ll be there long enough to go there!” Frank had to laugh at Joe’s enthusiasm. “I wonder if they have the Superman rollercoaster there?”“I don’t know – I did a quick check and saw a rollercoaster called The Rattler. It’s a coaster made of wood.” Joe’s eyes seemed to glow with excitement. He clutched the ball tighter before taking another shot at the basket. “I think this is going to be a great vacation!” Joe gave his brother a smile. “Dad is free – a rare but great occurrence!” “Yeah, it’s always great when Dad can be there with us!” replied Frank. “Now let’s just hope no mysteries pop up while we’re having fun!”“I could go for a vacation without a mystery – come on, let’s go see if lunch is ready!” Frank made one last shot then put his arm around Joe’s shoulders and the two brothers walked inside the house. ***** Arthur Gray closed and locked his office door. He wasn’t worried about anyone getting into his office during his absence. He had a special keypad lock that only three people could open. He walked down the hallway until he reached another office and entered. “Tell Anderson I’d like to see him,” he told the secretary, who jumped in fright when she realized who was standing in front of her. “Yes, sir!” Quickly informing her boss, the woman jumped from her chair to open the door for the Gray Man. “Arthur, good to see you.” John Anderson stood up to greet the Gray Man. Although in awe of his visitor, Anderson did not want to show it and tried to maintain a calm attitude. “My visit here has nothing to do with Network business – I’m just following procedure. I’m leaving tomorrow – I’m going on a trip. I’ll be…well, I’ll be on vacation.” Anderson appeared to be in shock but quickly changed his expression to one of neutrality. “Well…have a good trip. How long will you be gone?”“Only a week – I’ve locked my office. Since you and Van Appel are the only two who can get into my office…” “Not to worry, not to worry.” The two men stood silently for a few moments before the Gray Man turned and walked out the door. Mr. Anderson slowly sank back down into his chair. He shook his head in disbelief. “Who would have thought it…Arthur Gray going on vacation. The man is human after all!”
