THE CHAPTERS |
Callie waited for Vanessa in the women’s restroom; the two girls were out on a date with their boyfriends. Callie was fluffing up her hair when Vanessa came out of the stall. Washing her hands, Vanessa sighed. “I am so glad to be done with my period. Boys just don’t know how easy they have it.” Callie gave a small chuckle but her heart was pounding in fear. Thinking back, Callie knew that Vanessa had complained about the very same thing before she had left for New York. “Callie are you all right? Oh no, don’t tell me you started yours!” “No, no I’m fine and not just yet. But you know me, I’ve never been regular like you.” “Oh yeah, you could set your watch with me,” Vanessa laughed. “We better get back before Joe starts complaining.” “Or eats all the pizza,” Vanessa said with a smile. As they walked back to the booth, Callie breathed slowly, attempting to calm her nerves. ‘It’s not unusual for me to be late….I’ve never been the -twenty-eight days type….Not like Van….Oh please, please don’t let me be pregnant!’ Callie prayed silently. As the girls approached the booth, Frank turned to smile at Callie. His smile faltered when he caught the frightened look on her face. Joe also noticed something was wrong. “Hey Callie, you all right?” Joe asked. “You look a little green around the gills.” “I just realized I have a calculus test Monday morning and I haven’t studied yet.” “A test, they’re giving out tests already?” Joe grimaced. “We’ve only been back for two weeks now.” Callie smiled over at Frank when he took hold of her hand. “I don’t know about you juniors, but we seniors have to be prepared for college!” Callie teased Joe. Joe just grinned, although inside his heart, he felt sad. “Let’s not let this food go to waste. Dig in, everyone,” Frank said as he passed out some napkins. Promising herself not to worry, Callie did her best to enjoy the rest of the evening. Dropping Vanessa home first, Frank waited till Joe escorted Van to her front door before he spoke with Callie. “Cal, tell me what’s wrong. I can tell something is bothering you." “Oh Frank,” Callie almost sobbed, “I’m scared!” “Scared, scared about what?” “I’m scared that I might be pregnant,” Callie said in a whisper. Frank was stunned. “Are…are you sure?” “That’s just it, I don’t know!” “Then why do you think you are?” “Because Vanessa’s already had…” Callie blushed. “She’s had her period twice already. Once before we left for New York, and now.” “Oh.” Frank grew quiet for a moment. “Callie I want you to know, if you are, I’ll do the right thing.” “I know you will. I could be worried about nothing. I’ve never had a regular…um…period in my life. Let’s give it another week. Then we can start worrying.” Frank saw Joe come running back. Giving Callie’s hand a reassuring squeeze, he sat back in his seat. Sensing something was wrong, Joe kept silent during the ride to Callie’s house. Moving into the driver’s seat while Frank walked Callie to her front door, Joe observed their interaction. “Did you and Callie have a fight while I was telling Van goodnight?” he asked, when Frank returned to the car. “What? No, Cal’s just worried about that test,” Frank mumbled. He hated lying to Joe. ***** A week later Callie called Frank up with the bad news. She still hadn’t had her period. After hanging up the phone, Frank sat on the edge of his bed. He ran his hand through his hair, wondering what to do. “I’m going to have to tell mom and dad.” Frank said softly to himself. “Frank, can I talk to you?” Frank looked up to find Joe standing at the door. As Frank gazed at Joe, he realized that he never found out what had been bothering Joe that day so long ago. “Yeah Joe, in fact I had wanted to talk to you about something." “What about?” “You remember that day when I called from New York? We were talking about that big party. Even though I could tell you were excited, there was something else bothering you. I could hear it in your voice.” “Oh, yeah, that.” Joe could feel himself blushing, his face felt so hot. “Did Aunt Gertrude catch you stealing from the cookie jar again?” Frank teased. “I wish it was that simple.” Joe sighed, took a deep breath. “The day you left I was feeling kind of down. Biff called and we went out to the park. Van met up with us, we decide to go to the mall but Biff and I wanted to shower and change first. Van drove Biff home and we came here. Unfortunately no one was home but Van convinced me to take my shower anyway.” “Joe, you and Vanessa didn’t….” “NO! It started so innocently. Vanessa was teasing me and I started to tickle her…I accidentally touched her…you know…then we were kissing and um…doing some other things….Nothing happened, Frank! We stopped before it got out of hand. We almost got caught by mom and dad, though. “You what? How did they not catch you?” “While Van and I were trying to catch our breath, the doorbell rang. Thankfully, Biff arrived before mom and dad did. He was helping them carry the groceries in. Frank, I put my shirt on inside out.” “What about Vanessa? Was her shirt inside out as well?” “No, she grabbed her clothes and ran for the guest bathroom.” “Wait a minute. Her clothes? Just how far did you go?” “By clothes I meant her bra and shirt. Frank, I really love Vanessa. And I’ve been really glad that you and Callie have wanted to double date. Because honestly, Frank…Vanessa and I have been thinking of taking it to the next level.” Frank just stared at Joe. Then he exploded. “ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND??!!!” Joe was shocked at Frank’s outburst; Frank never screamed at him. Seeing the shocked and hurt expression on Joe’s face, Frank had him sit next to him. “Joe, I’m sorry for yelling at you. But when I tell why I did, you’ll understand.” Frank quickly told Joe what happened in New York and the possibility of Callie being pregnant. Joe stared at the wall; he didn’t know what to say. Then he heard Frank’s sad sigh. “Is Callie sure? Has she done one of those home pregnancy tests?" “She tried to buy one today but Liz Webling and some other girl were in the store. Liz started talking with Callie, she never got the chance to buy it.” “I have an idea. What if we drive out to Southport, have Callie spend the night with Vanessa. We could get the pregnancy test and take it there.” “I don’t know how Callie’s going to feel, knowing that you know about this.” “Frank, I know I tease Callie too much. Truth be told, I really like her. She makes you happy, and that in turn makes me happy.” “Thanks Joe. You’re the best baby brother any guy could have.” “I’ve been telling you that for years now.” Frank tousled Joe’s hair, then pulled him close for a hug. The two brothers held each other tight. “You really are the best,” Frank whispered. “So are you, big brother, so are you,” Joe whispered back. ******* Early that Saturday Joe woke up before Frank did. Not wanting to disturb Frank’s sleep, he headed out to Southport alone. After his talk with Frank, Joe had called Vanessa and told her about Callie’s problem. Vanessa readily agreed to the plan. Stopping at the first drugstore he came to, Joe went inside, only to find himself in a quandary. He didn’t know there were so many to choose from. Which was the best one? As much as he dreaded what he had to do, Joe walked over to the pharmacist to ask him which was the best product to buy. The pharmacist smiled sadly at Joe. He picked up a box and handed it to him. “This is the best one. It’s pretty accurate, but be sure to follow the instructions and see a doctor. Some of these have been known to give a false positive or negative.” “What’s that? False positive, false negative.” “It means it can tell you you’re pregnant, but you’re not, or that you’re not pregnant, but…” “You are. Okay, thanks.” “Good luck, son.” Joe quickly paid for the pregnancy test and hurried out of the store. Calling Vanessa on his cell, he told her what the pharmacist had said. “I’ll be sure to tell Callie when she gets here tonight.” Vanessa waited for Joe at the road entrance leading to her home. Giving him a quick kiss on the cheek, Vanessa ran back into the house. She hid the pregnancy test at the bottom of the trashcan in her room. Vanessa didn’t think her mother would find it there.
Later that afternoon, Andrea Bender passed by Vanessa’s room. She sighed when she spotted the overflowing trashcan. “I told her to empty that out!” Andrea mumbled. Finding a trash bag, she tipped the trashcan over to pour the contents into the bag. Andrea gasped when she saw the pregnancy test. “Hey Mom, you don’t mind if Callie spends the night tonight?” “What is this and why are hiding it? Is there something you should tell me, Vanessa?” Her eyes wide with fright, Vanessa didn’t know what to say. “Never mind, you don’t have to say anything.” Andrea grabbed Vanessa by the arm and dragged her out of the room. “Get in the car.” “But Mom, it’s not what you think!” “Get in the car right now, Vanessa Bender!” Joe was in the living room watching television, Frank was upstairs in his room. There was a loud knock on the door. “I wonder who that could be?” Fenton wondered out loud. “From the sound of that knocking probably a new client,” Laura commented. Andrea brushed past Fenton when he opened the door. Vanessa reluctantly followed her inside. “Andrea, is there something wrong?” Fenton asked. Andrea thrust out the boxed pregnancy test to Laura. “Yes, your son has gotten my daughter pregnant!” Let the author know what you think of this story
