CHAPTER 5

Frank had gone to his room to think. He wanted to have a plan worked out if Callie was pregnant. He had meant what he had told Callie, he was going to marry her. Her pregnancy was just speeding things along. So Frank sat down at his desk to figure out a course of action. First, he made out a budget.

Frank had always put aside half of what he earned from odd jobs and his allowance. He also saved any reward money he and Joe received from some of the cases they had solved. Frank knew he had at least fifteen hundred dollars in the bank. He knew his Aunt Gertrude had put aside a small sum to be used for college. Frank was fairly sure his aunt would let him use it to take care of Callie and the baby.

Frank sat back as he thought about the life that could be growing inside Callie. A small smile came to his face, a happy smile. Would the baby have Callie’s blonde hair or his brown? Would it be a boy or a girl? Frank hoped it would be a girl.

His daydreams were interrupted when he heard a loud banging coming from the front door. Then he heard shouting. Getting up from his chair, Frank went to investigate. As he came down the stairs he heard Andrea Bender’s angry accusation:

“Yes, your son has gotten my daughter pregnant!”

                                                  ******

Fenton and Laura Hardy turned as one, looking at Joe with shock and disbelief. Laura didn’t want to believe that Joe would be so irresponsible. A memory stirred in her brain, Biff running up the walk to help carry the groceries. Joe, his hair damp and tousled. Vanessa’s slightly flushed face when she came into the kitchen. Gertrude Hardy away visiting a sick friend. Laura had always assumed that Gertrude had just left before she and Fenton arrived home. Had Gertrude already gone before that?

Had Joe and Vanessa been alone long enough for them to have had sexual intercourse?

“Joe, the day your Aunt Gertrude went to visit her friend at the hospital. Was she here when you and Vanessa came back from the park or had she already left?”

Joe glanced over at Vanessa then back at his mother.

“She had already left, but nothing happened! Vanessa was downstairs watching TV while I took a shower.”

“Oh really?” Andrea sneered angrily. “Then explain why Vanessa was hiding that!” She pointed to the pregnancy test that Laura was now holding.

“Mom, I tried to tell you, it’s not mine. I…I bought it for a friend.”

Fenton was quietly observing Joe and Vanessa. Even though Joe denied that he and Vanessa had sex, something definitely did happen. Fenton figured there was some heavy petting involved. He felt that if he and Laura hadn’t come home when they did…the possibility of Vanessa being pregnant would have been likely.

“What friend, what’s her name?” Laura asked.

Vanessa looked over at Joe, silently asking him what to do.

“What are you two not telling us?” Fenton finally spoke up.

“I don’t understand what you mean, Dad,” Joe said nervously.

“I’ve been watching you two communicating silently. Is that test really for a friend or is there the possibility that Vanessa is pregnant?”

Joe had been fidgeting with worry; now he stood straight and looked his father in the eye.  “Vanessa is not pregnant. We can’t tell you who the test is for because we promised not to.”

No one heard or saw Frank as he came down the stairs. He couldn’t believe what Joe and Vanessa were doing. They were keeping silent to protect him and Callie.

“What kind of friend would knowingly let you get into this kind of trouble?” Andrea stood waiting impatiently for an answer.

“It’s all right, Joe,” Frank said in a soft voice. “Mom, Dad…Joe didn’t do anything….I did.”

Fenton and Laura were in shock. Frank, their Frank?  Always dependable, do-the-right-thing Frank Hardy got his girlfriend pregnant!?

“Fenton, Laura, I’m sorry for barging in the way I did. I think Vanessa and I should be going now.” Andrea began moving towards the front door. She paused and looked over at Joe.

“Joe, I don’t want you and Vanessa seeing each other for awhile. I need…I need you to stay away for a bit. At least till I calm down.”

“I can’t say that I like this, but I can understand why you want me to stay away. May I still call Vanessa on the phone?”

At first Andrea wasn’t going to allow any phone calls, but one look at her daughter’s face and she agreed.

Joe sadly watched Vanessa leave with her mother.

“I think it’s time for a family discussion,” Fenton said. He led his family into the living room, shutting off the television.

Joe and Frank sat closely together on the sofa, drawing strength from each other with just a touch.

“Explain yourself, Frank,” said Fenton.

“It happened on the last night in New York. There was a farewell party and someone snuck a couple bottles of champagne over to the patio. I was stupidly trying to impress one of the students up for a scholarship. I only drank three or four glasses; I didn’t realize how it was going to affect me. Callie and I both got dizzy and thought we should walk a bit. We ended up at the pool house and well, things got out of hand. That was the one and only time it happened!”

“Sometimes that’s all it takes,” Laura said softly.

“Joseph, do you have anything to tell us?” Fenton gave Joe a stern glare.

Joe suddenly found a hangnail on his forefinger very interesting.

“Joe?”

“I was just tickling Vanessa when I accidentally touched a part of her body I normally don’t. There was a lot of kissing…some heavy petting…our shirts may have come off but nothing else happened. I guess Vanessa realized what could happen and she asked me to stop and I did. That’s when you and mom came home.”

“Frank, do the Shaws know about this?”

“No sir.”

“Laura, I think you better call the Shaws and ask them to come over. Joe, I think it would be best if you went up to your room.”

Joe placed his hand on Frank’s leg, giving it a squeeze as if to say ‘everything will be all right.’ Frank gently rubbed Joe’s back as if to answer ‘I’ll be okay.’ Joe then sulkily walked upstairs to his room.

                                               *****

Thirty minutes later, Callie sat close beside Frank on the sofa, her hand held tightly to his. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw couldn’t believe what they had just been told. Mrs. Shaw didn’t know who she was disappointed in more, Callie for allowing Frank to take her virginity, or Frank for causing her to lose the trust she had in him. Mr. Shaw was both disappointed and angry at Frank. He was also angry at Fenton; he believed if Fenton had been at home more often this wouldn’t have happened.

“Well Hardy, what do you suggest we do?” Andrew Shaw asked.

“Excuse me, but I believe that’s up to Callie and me.”

The two sets of parents turned to Frank.

“Don’t you think you’ve caused enough trouble, Frank?” Catherine Shaw asked, somewhat angrily.

“I don’t see ourselves as ‘in trouble,’ Mrs. Shaw. First of all, Callie isn’t sure if she’s really pregnant.”

“That’s right, Mom. You know my…oh good Lord, I can’t believe I’m about to discuss my menstrual period with my boyfriend’s parents!” Callie almost wailed. Blushing with embarrassment she went on: “You know my periods have never been regular. That’s why I asked Frank to buy the pregnancy test.”

“When, or were you, ever going to tell us about this pregnancy scare?”

“I was going to tell you after the results, Mom. We found out that the box recommends seeing a doctor after you get the test results.”

“Fenton, do you think if we called Dr. Bates he would give Callie a pregnancy test?” Laura looked over at her husband.

“He might, let’s give him a call.”

“But what do we do if the test comes out positive?” Catherine asked.

“Callie and I get married sooner than we planned,” Frank replied.

“MARRIED!!!” The adults cried in unison.

“Frank, you and Callie are too young to get married! How can you go to college and support a wife?” Fenton tried to reason with his son.

“I’ve got it all figured out. I have some money saved. I’ll be getting some money from Aunt Gertrude as a graduation gift. If I have to go to the community college, then I will. I can work part-time and if that interferes with going to college, well that will have to wait.”

“I can find a job too,” Callie chimed in.

Mrs. Shaw began to cry. Laura tried to soothe her. Fenton and Andrew Shaw argued with Frank about his decision.

Gertrude Hardy had been away taking care of her friend, Mrs. Warner. Imagine her surprise on her arrival home, to find four screaming adults and two stubborn and frightened teens.

“What is going on here?!” she cried.

As quickly as possible, Fenton brought Gertrude up to date.

“Before you cause yourselves to have a heart attack, I suggest you find out if the poor girl is pregnant or not. Then you can deal with the other problems.”

This calmed everyone down somewhat. Laura went to phone Dr. Bates.

                                               ******

Callie didn’t want all four adults to come with her. She really just wanted Frank, but compromised by having her mother and Mrs. Hardy go with her.

Dr. Bates put a rush on the test but it was still going to take an hour for the results to come back, due to the lab being backlogged.

Two anxious mothers waited for the results. Callie was anxious too, but a part of her felt comforted in the fact that Frank would be by her side. As she stood gazing out the window, she felt a familiar pain in her abdomen. Running into the ladies’ room, Callie cried out with joy. She didn’t need to know the results of the test.

An hour later Dr. Bates confirmed Callie’s glee. The test came back negative.

                                                 ******

**A month later**

Joe Hardy drove up to the Bender home. Andrea had finally agreed to let Joe see Vanessa again. She let Joe know, in no uncertain terms, he had to gain her trust back.

Vanessa waited for Joe on the porch swing; she waved to him as he drove up. Walking with his hands behind his back Joe produced a bouquet of flowers for Vanessa.

“Oh Joe, they’re beautiful! Thank you!”

“I have something else for you too.”  Reaching into his pocket Joe took out a small box. He stared down at the box for a moment, then looked up at Vanessa.

“Vanessa, you know that Iola will always hold a special place in my heart. She was my first love. I want you to know that you’re my only love. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the first time I met you I fell in love with you.” Joe opened the box and took out a small silver ring. “This is a promise ring. My promise to marry you one day. And my promise that I will wait until our wedding night to be with you.”

Taking Vanessa’s hand, Joe placed the ring on her ring finger. Wiping the tears from her face, Vanessa threw her arms around Joe and hugged him fiercely.

Andrea stood quietly by the window; she also wiped a few tears away.

Over at the Shaws’ , Frank had a similar ring for Callie.

“Callie, I wish our first time didn’t happen the way it did. I don’t know if I regret what we did, I know if we hadn’t been drinking, it wouldn’t have. I promise to wait till our wedding night, because we will be getting married.”

“Yes, we will.”

Frank placed the ring on Callie’s finger, then they spent a quiet evening with Callie’s parents.

*****

A few weeks later letters came in the mail for Frank and Callie from the Starlight Foundation. Neither of them won the large scholarship, but each had been rewarded with a smaller one, enough to pay for tution at the college or university of their choice.

Both Frank and Callie decided to stay in Bayport and attend Bayport University, much to Joe’s relief.
