CHAPTER 25

The young woman quietly painted.  A nurse was walking around looking at the other patient’s work. She came to the young woman and smiled at her.

“That’s very beautiful, Alice. You really know how to capture the color of the flowers.”

Tucking her dark hair behind her ear, Alice smiled shyly at the nurse.

“Thank you, Lois. My sister is visiting me today. I might be released to go home.”

Nurse Lois didn’t say anything. She studied the painting a few more moments, then checked her watch.

“It’s almost time for your session with Dr. Webber. You should start putting your supplies away.”

As Nurse Lois walked away, Alice began to clean her brush. Glancing over with her eyes downcast, she glared at the nurse.

“I’ll be going home soon, you’ll see.” Alice thought to herself.

Joanna Walker arrived at the Glendale Hospital for the mentally ill with a feeling of excitement. Dr. Webber had asked her to come and speak with him. Joanna was hoping that he would tell her that Alice would be coming home.

A year had passed since Alice had been admitted into the hospital. Joanna shuddered as she thought of the events that had caused Alice to be here. “It was all my fault,” thought Joanna. “I should have moved to Bayport with her. Kept a close eye on her.” She let out a small sigh. Getting out of her car, Joanna hurriedly walked inside the hospital.

Joe Hardy sat in his room, holding a piece of paper. He let out an exasperated sigh and ran his hand through his blonde locks, causing his already tangled curls to be more of a mess. He looked up when he heard a low chuckle coming from the bathroom doorway and saw his brother, Frank standing there.

“Remind me again why I decided to minor in photography?” asked Joe is voice tinged with exasperation.

“Because you own a camera?” Frank chuckled softly.

“Some help you are!”

“Now I remember! You thought it would come in handy when we open up our own detective agency. You know, taking pictures of the clues we find or of any suspects we may be tailing.”

“Oh yeah, that was a good idea at the time.”

“So what’s wrong with your photography class?”

“This!” Joe handed Frank the paper he had been studying. “Those are some of my assignments for the class. I’m supposed to photograph something that conveys ‘happiness’ or ‘sadness’. How am I suppose to photograph ‘rapture’?!”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out. I have every confidence in you, baby brother.”

“Thanks, I’m glad someone does!”

Frank gave Joe back his assignment paper, then noticed the time on the digital clock. “Hey, shouldn’t you be getting ready to meet with Vanessa?”

“Oh man! And I promised not to be late!”

Frank went back to his room, laughing as he watched Joe frantically got ready for his date.

Joanna walked through her home, feeling its emptiness. There was sadness in her heart. Alice wasn’t coming home, probably never would. She had such high hopes that her baby sister would be coming back.

She entered the kitchen and proceeded to make herself some coffee. As she waited for the coffee, Joanna thought back to her visit with Dr. Webber.

Joanna entered the office, a smile on her face as she greeted Dr. Webber. “Do you have good news for me today, Doctor? Will Alice be coming home soon?”

Dr. Webber escorted Joanna over to a small sofa, he sat down next to her a sad expression on his face. “I’m sorry Ms. Webber, but Alice will probably never leave the hospital.”

“But…But you seemed so hopeful when she first arrived here.”

“And I was…I even saw some improvement but it was all a ruse. Alice has been fooling us all.”

Dr. Webber went on to explain how Alice had been fooling the nursing staff into believing that she was taking her medication. One of the nurses had seen Alice take out her medication and hide it. They soon realized that Alice had been tucking the pill under her tongue and then spitting it out.

Ordering a room inspection, Dr. Webber learned that this had been going on for months. The staff had found a small matchbox filled with pills hidden in a dresser. They also found some sketches…sketches of a blonde, blue-eyed young man.

Having finished drinking her coffee, Joanna rinsed out the cup. As she headed upstairs to bed, she wondered about the Hardy brothers.

In Glendale hospital, the patient in room 212 stole out of her room. She heard the low murmurs of the nursing staff, and knew it was time for the new shift to come in. She knew they would be in the nursing station for quite sometime discussing the patients.

Walking quietly down the hallway, she hurried over to the exit door. Taking out the key that she had stolen from the janitor, she unlocked the door. With one last look to make sure no one had seen her, Alice Walker let herself out the door.
