CHAPTER 25

Giving Joe one final kiss, Alice got up off the bed and turned to smile down at him.

“I have to go now. I need to get a few things for us.” As she walked away, Alice paused. “Oh…you can yell all you want but it won’t do any good. The house is too far away from the main road.”

Joe watched her leave; once Alice was gone he struggled to a sitting position again. He swung his legs off the bed and slowly stood up. Joe was glad that the straitjacket didn’t have what he referred to as a ‘tail’, that went between his legs.

“Okay…I can do this…how did Mel Gibson do it in ‘Lethal Weapon’? Oh yeah, Riggs had a dislocated shoulder…think, Joe think! What was that show Dad was watching…some show about two brothers who had a detective agency…”

As Joe was mumbling to himself, he was trying to move his arms. He noticed that Alice hadn’t tied the straitjacket too tightly.

“But tight enough to make this difficult!” Joe almost screamed his frustration. He knew he had to hurry since he didn’t know how soon Alice would return.

                                              ******

Now that she didn’t have to disguise herself around Joe, Alice didn’t bother putting the wig back on when she left for the grocery store. Instead she wore a baseball cap and dark sunglasses. Walking happily down the store aisles, Alice came upon two people she knew.

Vanessa had to get out of the house; she knew that her mother hadn’t done any grocery shopping. Callie understood that this was Vanessa’s way of coping with the situation at hand. They now stood in the frozen food aisle.

“I wish I knew who came into my house last night.” Vanessa stared glumly at the ice cream section.

“Frank will soon find out, and he’ll find Joe too!” Callie reassured her friend.

Alice stood quietly off to the side, listening to the two girls talk. Soon though, she began to hear other voices as well.

‘Frank’s going to take Joe away!’

‘They know! They know it was you!’

‘You have to take care of them!’

‘Take care of them the same way you took care of Joanna!’

Gripping her shopping cart more tightly, Alice started walking towards Vanessa and Callie. As she came nearer to them, Callie happened to turn in her direction.

Callie turned to see a girl with dark sunglasses on walking towards them. Before she knew what was happening, Alice lashed out and shoved her into the refrigerated glass door!

Too shocked to respond, it took Vanessa a minute to react. She watched in horror as her friend slid down to the floor, surrounded by broken glass.

Alice grabbed hold of Vanessa’s arm and spun her around. “Tell Frank to leave us alone!”

As Vanessa faced the strange girl with dark glasses, her heart beat rapidly with fright. Why did she feel like she should know this girl?

Alice let go of Vanessa’s arm as the store manager and several shoppers came running to see what happened. When Vanessa saw her start to leave, she ran after her.

 “Stop her! Stop that girl!”

Joe lay on the floor, panting for breath. He was slowly getting his right arm loose. Taking a deep breath, Joe tried once more to get out of the straitjacket. Five minutes later, he finally got his arm out. Now he began working to lift the straitjacket over his head. It was slow work but he finally did it! He was free!

Joe ran up the stairs; he tried to door and was relieved to find it unlocked. Cautiously opening the door, he peeked out, listening for any sound of Alice. Joe walked out and found that he was in a kitchen. He spotted a phone hanging on the wall. Thinking it would be his luck that the phone wouldn’t work, he was surprised and happy to hear a dial-tone.

“I need to tell Frank that Alice is back!”

Joe quickly dialed Frank’s cell phone, but groaned in frustration when he got the voicemail. “Frank…”

Joe didn’t hear Alice walk in.

Alice stood over Joe’s body, a sad expression on her face. Now she had to take care of him too.
