THE CHAPTERS |
Callie was stunned. Why had that girl pushed her? She was aware of voices, people telling her to keep still, help was on the way. When Callie heard Vanessa yelling at the girl to stop, she slowly turned her head and saw her friend run after the assailant. Attempting to stand up, Callie felt someone push her down. “Miss, please don’t move. Help is on the way.” “My…my friend…she…went…after that…that crazy person!” Mr. Grayson, the store manager tried to calm Callie. “Don’t worry, two of the stock boys ran to help her.”
As Vanessa chased after the dark-haired girl, several shoppers stopped and stared. Alice pushed people aside as she ran; she glanced over her shoulder and saw that Vanessa was right behind her. Feeling trapped, Alice reached inside her purse and pulled out a gun. She came to a stop and turned around. Pointing the gun at Vanessa, she pulled the trigger. ****** Sgt. Conway, Fenton and Frank were waiting for Dr. Webber in his office. After hearing about Joanna Walker’s death on the radio – a radio station van had been traveling around the area and happened upon the scene – Dr. Webber then called the police station asking to speak with the officer in charge. Dr. Webber came into the room; his light brown hair was brushed back and held in place with a leather band. He wore wire-rimmed glasses and had a goatee. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting; one of my patients had a bad reaction to a new medication. I’m Dr. Thomas Webber; I’ve been Alice Walker’s doctor since she first arrived here.” “Thank you for calling me, Doctor.” Sgt Conway stood up and held out his hand. “This is Fenton Hardy and his son Frank. Mr. Hardy’s youngest son was kidnapped and he believes that Alice may be involved.” “Did you say Hardy?” Dr. Webber turned to look at Fenton. “Yes, he did,” Fenton replied. Dr. Webber was silent for a minute; he seemed to be trying to make up his mind about something. He gave a short nod and opened up a folder that had been sitting on top of his desk.
“Your youngest son,
his name wouldn’t happen to be ‘Joe’, would it?” Fenton swallowed back his fear. “Yes it is.” Dr. Webber picked up a piece of paper and handed it over to Fenton. “Is that him?” Sgt. Conway, Fenton and Frank gazed at the drawing on the paper. It was a drawing of Joe, he was lying on an alter. Hanging above him was a large knife that looked ready to plunge into him. “We have to find Joe…we have to find him NOW!” ***** “Joe…wake up, Joe…it’s time to wake up now.” Joe let out a small groan as he slowly opened his eyes. His head was throbbing in pain. He squinted when he saw Alice standing in front of him, then looked down to find that she had tied him up, using rope instead of the straitjacket. “I’m sorry, Joe but she made me do it. She wouldn’t leave me alone.” “What are you talking about?” Alice moved to the side. Joe saw that she had been standing in front of the television. Using the TV remote to turn up the volume, Alice stood quietly as a news bulletin was broadcast. Bayport police are looking for a young woman in her twenties with dark hair, height around 5’5” or 5’6” tall. She is considered to be very dangerous. Two women were attacked by this mystery woman. One victim was pushed and sustained several cuts from the refrigerated glass doors in the frozen food section of the Safeway market. The second victim was shot in the shoulder as she ran after the assailant. Joe watched with growing horror when he saw Callie being escorted out of the grocery store. He saw paramedics lifting a gurney into the ambulance. Although her face was covered with an oxygen mask, Joe recognized her ash-blonde locks. “You…you shot Vanessa?” “I told you,” Alice almost snarled. “I had to! She wouldn’t leave me alone!” ******* Callie had been very lucky; she had been treated and released. She had only suffered from minor cuts. Vanessa on the other hand was now in the operating room getting a bullet removed from her shoulder. Callie wished that Frank were here; she had tried several times to call him but kept getting his voice-mail box. “Callie, how are you?” Laura Hardy had rushed to the hospital as soon as Callie had called her. “I’m okay…I’m a lot better than Vanessa! Have you heard from Frank?” “Yes, I was able to get through to Fenton. He and Frank should be here in a few hours…Callie…Alice Walker is back.”
