CHAPTER 25

Breathe…breathe…don’t lose it now…have to keep it together…can’t let this psycho witch get the best of me!

Joe stared at the television; Alice had dropped the remote and was now pacing the floor. He could hear her mumbling softly to herself, it sounded like she was speaking with someone. While she was ‘preoccupied,’ Joe tried to get himself loose.

He had to smile; Alice definitely didn’t want him getting away. She not only tied his wrists together, but had also wrapped the rope around his arms and chest. At least he could bend his elbows. Joe began to twist and pull his wrists, trying to loosen the rope.

“Joe.”

Jerking his head up, Joe saw that Alice was now standing in front of him. She looked so sad as she stood in front of him – that’s when Joe noticed the knife in her hand.

“Alice…”

“I have to go now…it’s time to take care of Frank…I won’t be gone long.”

Joe tried not to flinch as Alice caressed his face with the knife and then kissed him on the lips.

As soon as he heard the front door close, Joe frantically worked to free himself.

Frank couldn’t believe that he’d left his cell phone off! Not only did he miss Callie’s call but Joe’s call for help as well! The one good thing that came out of the situation was that the number that Joe called from was now on his Caller ID. While Fenton went to the police station, to get Chief Collig’s help, Frank was waiting with Callie and Mrs. Hardy. He had called Andrea about Vanessa getting shot; she would be arriving that evening.

Frank’s cell phone rang; he quickly got up and started to walk out of the waiting area. “It might be Dad,” Frank said as he walked away. He was puzzled to see that it was their home number.

“Hello, Dad is that you?”

“Frank,” a female voice whispered. Frank stiffened. He knew that voice.

“Where’s Joe, Alice?!”

“Here with me. We want to see you…but only you, Frank!”

Frank glanced over at his mother and Callie; he saw that they were talking to a woman dressed in hospital scrubs, who was probably the doctor. Noting the relieved looks on the women’s faces, Frank figured that Vanessa was not in any danger.

“I’m on my way,” Frank said. He ended the call and took the exit stairs. He was in too much of a hurry to wait for the elevator.

Vanessa was going to be all right. The gunshot had not been life-threatening. Callie turned around; she wanted to tell Frank that Vanessa was fine.

“Where’s Frank?”

Laura looked over at Callie then she turned in the direction that the girl was looking. Where was Frank?

Joe was becoming increasingly frustrated. His hands were still tied when he came to the sudden realization that his legs were not immobile. ‘I’m acting like one of those no-name characters that get killed straight off in a B-horror movie!’ Joe thought as he got up and headed for the kitchen. He went looking for a knife to cut his restraints with.

He entered the kitchen and let out a cry of relief. There on the counter was a knife rack. He noticed that there was one knife missing; he knew that was the one Alice had. Joe almost growled when he found that he couldn’t reach the small rack. As he stared at the knives, trying to figure out how to get one. He noticed that the counter top was made of tile…the corner of the counter had been broken. Walking slowly over to the end of the counter, Joe traced his finger over the tile and noticed the sharp edge.

“This is better than nothing.” Joe began to rub the ropes against the sharp edge of the tile.

When Frank arrived at his family home, he found the front door was open. He cautiously entered the house.

“Joe, Alice, where are you?”

“Up here, Frank.”

Frank glanced up at the stairs but saw no one. He took a deep breath and began to climb the stairs.

Alice stood in the shadows waiting, her hand tightly gripping the knife.
