CHAPTER 25

Fenton Hardy paced up and down the small office that belonged to the Chief of Police. His youngest son had been kidnapped by a mentally ill woman. And now his oldest son had suddenly disappeared after receiving a phone call.

“How long does it take to find a home address, Ezra?”

Before he had a chance to answer, Officer Con Riley walked into the office.

“Chief, the address trace just came in; it’s located at the Woodlands Estate area. 3145 Oaklawn Street, the house belongs to Ms. Joanna Walker.”

“Fenton, before you think about heading over there…we need to get a warrant! Riley, get me Judge Harlan on the phone”…[ Ezra gave Fenton a wink]…”he owes me a favor.”

Fenton gave his friend a small smile; he just hoped that they weren’t too late to help his sons.

Frank had almost reached the top of the stairs, when a shadowy figure came charging at him. He instinctively raised his arms in a defensive gesture, and hissed as he felt a sharp pain go down his arm.

As Alice raised her arm to strike Frank with the knife again, he reached out and grabbed hold of her hand. Although stronger than Alice, Frank found himself struggling to keep her from hurting him.

Alice could feel Frank getting the upper hand. Screaming her frustration she threw herself at him. Without thinking, Frank took a step back but his foot found only air. They both tumbled down the stairs.

As he fell down the stairs, Frank felt the knife plunge into his side.

Alice found herself tumbling over Frank and landing hard on her back. She lay still for a minute trying to catch her breath. She heard someone moaning in pain and realized it was Frank. Slowly getting to her feet, Alice looked at Frank. He had his eyes closed, there was blood on his arms and a knife embedded in his body.

Alice knelt down beside him; she softly stroked his hair off his forehead. “Don’t worry, Frank. I’ll take good care of Joe.”

Frank watched Alice leave as he slipped into unconsciousness.

Joe had frayed the rope enough that with one mighty tug, his hands were free. He quickly wiggled out of the rest of his bonds. Not wanting to get caught off guard again, Joe ran out the back door. He wanted to get as far away from Alice as he could.

Joe found himself in a spacious backyard. He cautiously walked to the front of the house, and saw a long winding driveway. Sticking close to the small trees that lined the driveway, Joe hurried down the main road. He ducked behind bush when he heard the sound of a car.

When Joe saw who was inside of the car, a feeling of relief washed over him. He jumped out of the bushes and waved down his father and Chief Collig.

Laura Hardy drove Callie to the Hardy home. She wanted Callie to get some rest and something to eat. They had been assured by the doctor that Vanessa would not awaken for at least two more hours. Laura was hoping that Frank had left a message on the answering machine.

“Frank’s here…why didn’t he tell us he was going home?” Laura wondered aloud.

 “I don’t know but…something doesn’t feel right.” Callie replied.

Laura felt it too, something was wrong. The two women held onto each other as they approached the door. Callie looked at Laura with wide-eyed fear when they saw the front door was open.

Wanting to protect Mrs. Hardy, Callie gently pushed the older woman to the side and went inside. As if she were in a nightmare, Callie thought the short hallway seemed to go on forever. When she saw the body lying at the bottom of the stairs, she couldn’t comprehend what she was seeing. It wasn’t until Laura screamed that Callie realized that the body belonged to Frank.

Laura pushed Callie out of the way as she ran to her son. She had seen the knife. Sinking down to the floor, Laura placed two fingers on Frank’s neck. She breathed a sigh of relief when she felt a pulse…it was weak, but a pulse nonetheless.

“Callie, call an ambulance! Callie!” Laura looked up; the girl was in shock. Trying to keep her emotions under control, Laura jumped into action. She got up off the floor and hurried over to Callie. Regretting what she had to do, Laura slapped Callie hard across the face.

“I need you with me now, Callie! Stay by Frank, I need to call for an ambulance.”

Placing a hand over her right cheek, Callie couldn’t believe that Laura had slapped her, but she understood why Laura had done it. Callie went over to Frank. When she saw his shirt soaked with blood, she began to cry. She held Frank’s hand, leaning down she whispered in his ear.

 “I’m here, Frank…I’m here…”You’re safe now.”

Frank tried to open his eyes…his eyelids felt so heavy…he had to warn them…Alice…Alice was going to kill Joe.
