CHAPTER 25

Before the car could come to a complete stop, Fenton jumped out. He grabbed Joe into a tight hug.

“Joe, thank God you’re all right!”

Joe returned the hug, happy to see his father come to his rescue. He reluctantly pulled back; Frank’s life was at stake.

“Dad, we have to find Frank! Alice is-”

 “Frank isn’t with you?”

“No! Why would he be—is Frank missing?”

“Your mother called; as she and Callie were speaking with the doctor treating Vanessa your brother received a phone call…”

“Is Vanessa okay? How bad was her gunshot wound?”

“How did you-” Fenton was surprised that Joe knew Vanessa had been shot.

“Alice told me…she also let me see the news report.” Joe said angrily. “And then she left to go ‘take care of’ Frank!”

Joe stood quiet for a moment; as much as he wanted to leave, he knew he had to stay. Making up his mind, Joe turned back towards the house.

 “Joe, what are you doing?!”

“I have to go back. I have to wait for Alice…she’s the only one who can tell us where Frank is.”

Chief Collig was watching Joe and Fenton when he heard a call come in on his police scanner. He got out of the car to stop the Hardys. “Fenton!” Collig ran over to his friend. “A call just came in, about a stab wound…the call came from your house.”

“Frank!” Joe, his face pale from fear, gripped Fenton’s arm.

“I’ll leave a patrol car here; once Alice arrives back here, we’ll have her arrested.”

As Collig led Fenton and Joe back to his car, no one noticed the young woman standing at the corner. Her hands stained with blood, her jeans torn and ragged.

 ‘They’re taking Joe away!’

{‘No, he left you’}

Alice shook her head; she didn’t want to believe what the voice said. ‘He wouldn’t leave me…He loves me!’

Alice covered her ears as she heard the voice laugh. She turned and ran back to her car. “I’ll prove it…I’ll prove to you that he loves me!”

‘He left you…just like everyone else left you!’

‘Don’t listen to her, you’re right…he loves you.’

‘Frank said he loved her…but he lied!’

“Frank…he tricked me…He made them take Joe!”

When Chief Collig arrived at the Hardy home, the ambulance was just leaving. They saw Callie standing on the front lawn, her face filled with worry.

“Callie, what happened?” asked Joe as he ran over to her.

As Callie explained how she and Mrs. Hardy found Frank, her body began to shiver as she recalled seeing Frank lying on the floor. Joe drew her close, trying to give her comfort with his presence.

“Oh Joe, he looked so pale! I’ve never seen him look so…so…defenseless and weak!”

Callie buried her face into Joe’s chest, sobbing softly as Joe held her.

“He’ll be okay, Callie…Frank…Frank’s strong…he’ll pull through this, you’ll see!”

Fenton patted Callie’s back. “Joe’s right, Callie. Why don’t we get you back into the house. Let you calm down a bit, then we’ll go see Frank.”

“I think we all need to calm our nerves,” Joe said.

“But what about Alice?” asked Callie.

“She’s probably in the back of a police cruiser by now.” Joe replied.

Alice was seething as she saw that blonde girl hugging Joe. She watched as Joe and the blonde, Callie, went into the house. The two older gentlemen stayed outside, and then the one that looked like an older version of Frank went inside.

Ezra Collig clicked on the radio receiver on his shoulder; he wanted to check on the progress of Alice’s capture. He never saw Alice sneak up behind him.

No one had bothered to shut the doors to the police car, Alice saw the police baton hanging in the back of the cruiser. Holding it firmly in her hand she swung it at the back of Collig’s head, knocking him out cold. She removed his gun from his holster and walked inside the Hardy home.
