CHAPTER 25

Laura watched as the EMT’s rushed Frank into the emergency room. She wondered how soon Fenton would be arriving and if he had found Joe. She let out a small sob as she covered her mouth. No, she couldn’t do this…not yet…she had to be strong. Fenton would find Joe and Frank was going to pull through.

 “Excuse me, ma’am.”

Laura turned to find the desk nurse giving her a sad smile.

“I’m sorry, but I need you to fill out this registration form and I need to see your insurance card. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound uncaring, and it’s just standard policy.”

“I know, believe me, unfortunately I know all about standard policy,” Laura sighed. Taking the clipboard from the desk nurse, Laura went to go find a chair and began filling out the forms.

Con Riley walked into the emergency room a few minutes later; he saw Mrs. Hardy and went over to her.

“Hello, Mrs. Hardy. Is Mr. Hardy making sure Joe sees the doctor?”

 “What? You found Joe?”

Seeing the puzzled look on her face, Con suddenly had a bad feeling. “Aren’t Mr. Hardy and Joe here? Dispatch said that Chief Collig heard the call about Frank and was on his way here.”

“Maybe they stopped off to pick up Callie. She stayed behind in case anyone called.”

“Yeah…maybe…you know, Mrs. Hardy…I think I better go and check…just to be sure.”

 “Yes, I think you should…and Con…”

 “Yes?”

 “Please hurry!”

As they stared at each other, they both sensed the danger that seemed to be lurking.

“You can count on it!” Con ran out of the emergency room.

Alice could hear them in the kitchen…laughing…they were laughing at her!

Callie was cleaning the scratches around Joe’s wrists; Fenton was looking through the drawers trying to find some small bandages.

“I think they’re upstairs in the medicine cabinet.” Joe said.

“I’ll go get them, Mr. Hardy. Maybe I’ll find some antibiotic ointment to put on these scratches.”

Callie walked out of the kitchen…two seconds later she screamed.

Joe and Fenton immediately headed out of the kitchen, only to come to a stop when they saw Callie walk back in. Walking behind her was Alice, who held a gun to Callie’s head.

Joe saw the bloodstains on Alice’s hands. Whose blood was it, Alice’s or Frank’s? He knew he had to do something before Alice hurt Callie.

“Alice, you’ve been hurt!” Joe said, putting as much concern in his voice as he could. “You’re bleeding!”

“It’s not my blood,” Alice replied, her voice devoid of any emotion.

Joe let out an exaggerated sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness!”

Alice glared at Joe, and slowly shook her head. “You don’t fool me…you can’t lie to me anymore…I saw you! I saw you holding her in your arms!”

Callie let out a painful cry when Alice pulled her hair. Joe lowered his head; he then raised his eyes up to stare at Alice, his sapphire-blue eyes filled with sorrow.

“I’m sorry you saw that, Alice. But you have to believe me…it didn’t mean anything…it was wrong of me to hug her—especially  when it’s you I care about.”

“Joe, what are you saying?!” Fenton said with disbelief.

“Shut up, Dad!” Joe turned to glare at Fenton. “I told you I didn’t want to leave! I told you I wanted to stay with Alice, but you wouldn’t listen!”

As Fenton stared at his son, shock registering on his face, he saw Joe give him a sly wink. Joe turned back to face Alice, and saw the confusion on her face. Taking a deep breath, Joe gave her his best puppy-dog look. His blue eyes implored her to give him another chance…to believe in him.

“Come on, Alice, let’s get out of here. Don’t be mad at me.”

Joe saw Alice had loosened her grip on Callie. He moved towards them and pushed Callie out of the way. He stood in front of Alice and reached for the gun, which now hung down at her side. He tried not to flinch when Alice reached out to cup his face. He placed his hand over the gun as she kissed him.

He managed to get the gun out of her hand as he broke the kiss, and smiled sweetly at her.

 “Sorry about this, Alice.”

As much as Joe hated hitting a female, he felt he had no other choice. He took one step back and punched her on the jaw. She crumpled to the floor.

Joe wiped his mouth and looked like he was about to be sick. At that moment, Con Riley came rushing in.

“Hi Con, I hope you have some cuffs on you,” Joe said with a smile.

A week later…

Frank lay resting on the couch, glad to be back home. His wounds were healing nicely. He had been lucky that his liver hadn’t been severely damaged, but the amount of blood he had lost had concerned the doctors. Frank sat up a bit, trying to adjust his pillows.

“Here, let me help you,” Joe said as he came into the family room. He adjusted the pillows to Frank’s liking and then helped his brother sit in a more comfortable position.

 “Thanks, Joe.”

“You’re welcome…just don’t get used to this special treatment!”

Frank laughed; he knew Joe was teasing him. “What, afraid I’m invading your territory?”

“I am the baby of the family! I’m the one who’s supposed to get special treatment!”

Joe carefully sat down on the couch, his face filled with concern as he looked at his brother. “Frank…I’m really glad to have you back home.”

 “Me too, baby brother.”

“When Callie told us how she and mom found you…and she described your injuries…” Joe paused, overcome with emotion.

Frank reached out and took Joe’s hand in his. “I’m okay, Joe. Alice is back at the hospital where she belongs and she’s never coming back.”

 “I hope you’re right, Frank.”

                                         ******

Sitting in the corner of her padded cell, Alice sat and dreamed. She dreamed of two brothers. One tall with dark brown hair and milk chocolate colored eyes…the second brother was an inch shorter, with wavy blonde hair and vivid blue eyes.
