Joe plopped down in an exhausted heap in the chair that his long time girlfriend, Vanessa Bender had been saving for him. They were meeting for lunch in the Bayport University cafeteria.

“Having a bad day?” Vanessa asked with a twinkle in her gray-blue eyes.

“Man and I thought high school was hard!” Joe moaned.

“Aww, you poor thing.” Vanessa smoothed back his blonde locks away from his forehead.

Joe rested his head on Vanessa’s shoulder as she continued to stroke his hair.

“Vanessa, quit babying him, he’s bad enough as it is with Mom!”

Joe stuck his tongue out at his brother as Vanessa continued to coddle him. Frank looked heavenward; his brown eyes gleamed with merriment at his little brother’s antics. He knew that Vanessa could never resist Joe’s baby blues.

“Where’s your shadow?” Joe asked.

“Don’t you mean my ‘better half’?” replied Frank.
”No, because I’m your ‘better half’!” Joe grinned wickedly.

“You wish!” Frank saw Callie walking in and waved her over.

Giving Frank a huge smile, she dashed over to the table. As she kissed Frank on the cheek, Callie smiled at Vanessa and Joe.

“What’s wrong with him?” she asked.

“Please, don’t get him started!” implored Frank.

Waking up that morning, Alice had been confused as to where she was. Then she remembered her daring escape and smiled. Peeking out of the cardboard box she had found to use as her shelter, Alice saw that she was in an alley. She knew that she would have to be careful. The hospital staff would know that she was gone by now. They would be contacting Joanna and possibly the police.

“Joanna,” Alice frowned. “It was her fault that he wasn’t with her. Her fault that I in that hospital! I’m not sick! I’m not!”

Crawling out of the box Alice knew it was time. Time to go home. She had to get ready. Checking the coins she had in her pocket, Alice quickly walked over to a bus stop. She saw a bus arrive and she waited her turn.

“Excuse me, but does this bus go to 5520 Gardina?”

The bus driver shook his head. “You want the number 4, that will leave you about a block away. Just wait here, one should be arriving in ten minutes.”

“Thank you.” Alice smiled sweetly at the bus driver as she stepped away from the curb.

An hour later, Alice had arrived at her childhood home. Finding no one at home, she searched for the spare key that Joanna always kept hidden. She found it underneath a flower pot and let herself in. Going upstairs to her room, Alice was happy to find that Joanna had kept all of her clothes. Getting a pair of jeans and coral pullover, Alice then went looking for a pair of scissors. Finding what she wanted, Alice went into the bathroom. As she stared at herself in the mirror, Alice slowly raised the scissors then began to cut her now waist length hair.

Satisfied with her new look, Alice took out a piece of paper from her pocket. It was time to make her call.

“Hello, did you still want to keep your sister in Glendale?...I understand but I still want you…Yes, I’ll have the money for you…I’ll have it by tonight…My sister will be giving me back what’s mine….Tomorrow, come by tomorrow night…5520 Gardina…Goodbye.”

It was past six p.m. when Joanna arrived home, sick with worry. Alice had left the hospital and so far had not been found. Joanna hoped that her sister had not gone to Bayport. Standing by the phone, Joanna knew she should call the Hardys. Picking up the phone, she paused when she heard a noise coming from upstairs. Putting the phone back on its cradle, Joanna slowly walked up the stairs.

Just as she was reaching the top step…a figure came running out of the room, Joanna let out a scream when she saw the scissors. She let out another scream when she saw who was plunging the scissors into her chest.

“Alice!”
