THE CHAPTERS |
Joe ran out of the gym, feeling really great. He thought he’d done well enough at the tryout to make the football team. Joe could feel water dripping down his neck; his hair was still damp from the shower he’d taken after football tryouts. As he ran towards the parking lot, he couldn’t wait to tell Frank about the rest of his day. Joe was fumbling with his windbreaker when he ran into someone, and they fell to the ground. Looking over at the person he stumbled into, Joe blushed with embarrassment when he saw he had knocked down a girl. Her blue eyes sparkling with laughter, the girl brushed her hand through her hair. Auburn in color, her shoulder length hair curled at the ends. She had an oval face, high cheekbones and her skin was pale as is she hadn’t spent much time outdoors. “Is this how you always meet girls on campus?” “No! I’m really sorry; I wasn’t looking where I was going. Are you okay? You’re not hurt are you?” “Just my pride, how ‘bout you?” “I think my pride and my ego took a beating. Here, let me help you up.” Joe quickly got to his feet; he held out a hand and helped he girl up. He then picked up her book bag and handed it over to her. When she stood up, Joe noticed that she had a curvy body. “I’m Joe Hardy, by the way.” “I’m Allie…Allie Palmer, nice to meet you, Joe.” As she smiled and shook hands, Allie’s face suddenly turned crestfallen. “Oh no! There goes my bus! Now I’ll have to wait at least a half hour for another one.” “My car is just a few feet from here. I can give you a ride home.” “Oh, you don’t have to do that…” “It’s the least I can do…I mean, I did cause you to miss your bus!” Joe gave her a big smile, causing Allie to giggle. “Okay, thank you, I really appreciate it.”
As Joe drove Allie home, in typical form, he playfully flirted and teased her. He found out that Allie had just transferred to Bayport University. They soon arrived at Allie’s home, which turned out to be a four-plex apartment. “You picked a good place to live. This is a good neighborhood.” Allie gave Joe a seductive smile, and placed her hand on his thigh. He squirmed a little uneasily wondering if Allie had taken his flirting too seriously. “Um…Allie, I don’t know if I mentioned this but…I have a girlfriend…” Suddenly Allie laughed; she removed her hand from his thigh and placed it on his shoulder. She leaned over and gave him a light peck on the cheek. “Gotcha!” Getting out of the car, she leaned down to look at Joe. “I saw the picture you have taped on the dashboard. She’s really pretty and you shouldn’t flirt and get a girl’s hopes up. Thanks for the ride.” Closing the car door, she ran to her front door. Joe shook his head then drove off. Allie turned to watch him leave. Once she knew that had gone far enough away. Allie stepped away from the front doorstep; she walked down the block until she came upon a black Saturn. Taking out a set of car keys, she got into the car; there was no need to hurry. She knew where he lived. It didn’t take Joe long to get home. When he pulled into the driveway he was happy to see a familiar vehicle parked by the curb. He found Vanessa in the kitchen, helping Mrs. Hardy with dinner. “See I told you, once Joe smelled dinner I knew he’d be home soon.” Mrs. Hardy smiled over at her son. “That’s because you’re the best cook in all of Bayport! How do you think I always found my way home?” Joe kissed his mother on the cheek; he then went over to Vanessa and put his arm around her waist. “This is a nice surprise seeing you here.” “Mom is out of town; she’s on a business trip, and your mom took pity on my and invited me to stay for dinner. Plus, we’re supposed to be working on your photography assignments, remember?” “That’s right! Football tryouts went a little longer than I thought, I completely forgot that!” “Hmm, and what else did you forget to tell me?” Vanessa wiped a smudge off Joe’s cheek. “I don’t wear this shade of lipstick.” “Oh,” Joe blushed: “I, uh…I accidentally ran into this girl when I was heading for the car. I felt terrible causing her to fall down and then she missed her bus so I gave her a ride home and she uh…she kissed me.” “You were running and trying to put on your jacket at the same time, weren’t you?” Vanessa asked with a knowing smile. “Yeah, you got me.” “I knew it! So who is this mystery girl and should I be worried?” “Her name’s Allie Palmer and you have nothing to worry about!”
Outside at the corner of Elm and High Streets, a black Saturn was parked. A young woman with auburn hair and blue eyes sat watching and waiting. Let the author know what you think of this story
