CHAPTER 25

As Frank parked his car behind Vanessa’s, he noticed a dark colored Saturn parked at the corner. He thought he saw someone sitting in the car. Closing his car door, Frank turned around to get a better look at the other vehicle. It was still parked but now there was no one in the car. He wondered who the car belonged to, and was about to walk over to get the license plate number when the arrival of another car caught his attention.

“Just getting home, Frank?” Fenton Hardy smiled at his son.

“Huh? Oh, yeah dad, I just got here.”

Noticing that Frank’s attention was elsewhere, Fenton went to stand by his son’s side. “Something wrong, Frank?”

“I don’t think so, I was just wondering about that car parked at the corner.”

“Well, let’s go check it out.”

As they started to head towards the car, they heard the start of an engine; the Saturn quickly turned the corner and was gone. Frank wanted to get into his vehicle and follow it, but Fenton held him back.

“Forget it, Frank. It was probably a would-be burglar casing the house. I’m sure we’ve scared him away.”

“Are you sure, Dad?”

“I’m positive; now let’s go inside before your brother eats our share of dinner.”

“Yeah, and Vanessa is here to help him. I wish I knew where she puts it! That girl must have a hollow leg!”

Joe’s voracious appetite was well known among his family and good friends, but not many people knew that Vanessa had a healthy appetite as well. Slinging his book bag over his shoulder, Frank walked with Fenton towards the house.

When Allie saw the two Hardy men start walking towards her car, she immediately started the car and left. She didn’t go far, she drove around the block. Now parked on the other end of Elm Street, she waited patiently.

Proclaiming it too late to work on his assignment, Joe made a date with Vanessa to start on it the next morning. They both had afternoon classes and Joe promised not to sleep in late. He walked Vanessa to her car.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to follow you home?”

“I’m positive, I’ll be fine. Now give me a kiss goodbye and go get started on your other homework!”

“Man, you’re bossy!” Joe said with a smile and a kiss.

Allie waited till Joe went back into the house before she started to follow Vanessa.

It wasn’t until she left the city limits that Vanessa noticed that a car seemed to be following her. She kept glancing into her rearview mirror. She breathed a sigh of relief when the car made a left turn. ‘I guess Joe got me a little spooked with his insistence on following me home.’ Vanessa chuckled softly and continued on home.

Noticing that Vanessa had slowed her speed, Allie wondered if she had seen her. At the first road she came to, Allie flicked on her turn signal. Turning onto the road, she quickly made a U-turn and turned off her headlights. Allie turned back onto the road and once again followed Vanessa.

She stopped her car as Vanessa turned into a small road; Allie saw the other girl head towards a house. A few feet away from the house was a barn.

Vanessa ran up the porch steps; she was glad that she had remembered to leave the front porch light on. The rest of the house was dark; she had forgotten to leave lights on inside. Vanessa searched for a light switch, finally finding one: the living room was soon bathed in a soft glow of light.

Plopping herself down on the couch, Vanessa was glad she had finished most of her class assignments before heading out to see Joe. All she needed to do was the one from her Computer Graphics class.

“Well, if I want to get this homework done, I better head up to my room! Can’t do anything without my computer!”

Forcing herself off the couch, Vanessa headed upstairs.

Allie watched the house, and saw a light go on downstairs, and then another one went on upstairs. An hour later both lights went out. She waited a few more minutes before starting her car. Allie drove into the road leading to Vanessa’s house. She parked her car in back of the barn.

Walking as quietly as she could, Allie walked over to the house. She held a flashlight in her hand, pointing it downward so that the light wouldn’t wake Vanessa. She found what looked to be a cellar door. There was no lock on it, so Allie pulled on the handle.

Vanessa was drifting off to sleep when she suddenly felt a hand cover her mouth. Her eyes flew open; the room was too dark to see anything. Vanessa reached out to try and remove the hand; suddenly she felt a sharp pain on the side of her head. As the darkness overtook her, Vanessa heard a harsh whisper.

“Joe belongs to me!”
