Joe heard the alarm clock go off, and was sorely tempted to hit the snooze button, but he had promised Vanessa to be up early. Reaching out to turn the alarm off, he sat on the edge of his bed yawning sleepily. Joe forced himself to get up off the bed, and went into the bathroom to take a nice hot shower. Freshly showered and dressed, Joe headed downstairs in search of breakfast. He found his mother already preparing the meal. Laura Hardy looked up to smile at her baby boy. “Good morning, Joe. I always knew you could get up this early in the morning.” “I may be up but my brain isn’t functioning just yet. And it won’t function until I’ve had some caffeine!” Laura laughed as Joe poured some coffee into a mug. Adding some milk and a generous amount of sugar, he took a sip and sighed with contentment. “What time is Vanessa coming by?” “She’s supposed to give me a wake up call, then she’ll either head over here or we’ll meet up at the city park.” Joe checked the time on his watch. Vanessa would be calling soon. ****** A small groan escaped Vanessa’s lips. She wondered why her head hurt so badly. Then she remembered: a hand covering her mouth…a shadowy figure standing over her…a sharp pain…then darkness. Vanessa tried to raise her hand, and found that she couldn’t. Slowly opening her eyes, Vanessa discovered that she was tied to a chair. “Well, now I know why my neck hurts too.” She tried moving her hands to see if she could loosen the rope that bound her wrists. Vanessa kept pulling her hands up from the arm rest, but the rope was too tight. Taking in her surroundings, Vanessa saw that she was in a basement. She spotted some stairs a few feet away from her. Realizing that she wasn’t gagged, Vanessa began screaming for help. She screamed for several minutes until the sound of a door opening caused her to stop. She looked up and saw someone dressed in dark clothing walk slowly down the steps. A ski mask covered the person’s face. “You’re wasting your time; no one can hear you.” “I don’t know who you are, but you better let me go! My boyfriend isn’t going to be very happy when he finds out I’m gone.” “He. Is. Not. Your. BOYFRIEND!!” Vanessa winced from the venomous tone; she began to shiver with fear when she saw the pure hatred in her captor’s eyes. Why did this person hate her? Vanessa closed her eyes and prayed for Joe to find her. ******* Joe hung up the phone, his face filled with worry. Why wasn’t Vanessa answering the phone? Frank came into the kitchen and saw his brother’s worried expression. “What’s the matter, Joe?” “Vanessa’s not answering her phone, her cell or home phone.” “Maybe she forgot to turn on her cell and the reason she’s not answering at home is that she’s on her way here.” Joe shook his head. “No, she was going to call first. She was teasing me about making sure I would be awake this morning.” Taking a swallow of his coffee, Frank could see how upset Joe was. He put his cup down and grabbed a piece of toast. “Tell you what, why don’t we go over to Vanessa’s and check on her?” “Won’t you miss your class?” “The good thing about American History: it’s always going to be there. Come on, baby brother.” A huge smile crossed Joe’s face. “Thanks, Frank.” “Anytime, baby brother, anytime.”
They soon arrived at the Bender home. “There’s Vanessa’s car,” Frank pointed out. “Maybe she got sick, or fell and hurt herself.” The brothers walked up to the front door. Joe knocked on the door, then looked over at Frank when the door slowly swung open. “This doesn’t look good, Frank. Not good at all.” Frank had to agree.
