As the Chevy sped away, the truck came to a screeching stop. The driver – a forty-year-old man with sandy brown hair and a muscular physique jumped out of the vehicle running across the road. Half way across he turned to yell at his passenger – his son. “Shane get on the CB and call for help! That was the Morton kid’s car!” Almost sliding down the ditch the man soon reached the yellow jalopy. There were dents on the driver’s side he hoped that Chet was all right, not knowing that Iola was with her brother. He heard a low moan coming from the driver’s side. “Chet…Chet – are you badly hurt?!” “M-Mr. Reynolds?...I…I think so,” moaned Chet. “I-Iola…how is Iola?!” Mr. Reynolds looked over Chet and saw a small figure leaning against the passenger door. He ran around to the other side to get a better look and let out a gasp when he saw blood running down the right side of her face. “Dad…Dad! I brought the first aid kit!” Shane yelled as he came tumbling down into the ditch. “Good thinking, son!” “I also put the emergency lights on – the police and an ambulance are on their way.” “Go check on Chet, then I want you to go back up so the police will see you.” Shane stared wide-eyed at Iola then hurried around to Chet. Comforting Chet and letting him know that help was on the way Shane then made his way carefully back up to the road. Two minutes later, he saw a county sheriff’s car heading his way. **** When Biff arrived at the Hardy home, most of the neighbors had gone back into their homes but the fire truck was still parked in front of the Hardy’s home. Walking around the truck he found Frank and Joe standing in front of the bay window, their next-door neighbor Mr. Johnson measuring the window. “Hold on son.” One of the firemen stopped Biff. “It’s okay Mike, he’s a friend of the Hardys.” Scott smiled at Biff. “Biff what brings you here?” Frank called out. “I was going to ask if you wanted to go play some basketball, but as I was walking over here I saw smoke and got worried.” “What I want to know is how he knew the smoke was coming from your house?” chuckled Scott. “You haven’t hung around them as long as I have to know where there’s smoke….there’s a Hardy nearby!” laughed Biff ducking away from Frank who was trying to punch his arm. “We’re done here, Frank. Good thinking on the fire extinguishers otherwise the damage would have been a lot worse.” Scott sketched a wave as he left to join his fellow firefighters in the truck. “Soo…is there anything I can do to help?” asked Biff.
Joe, Frank and Biff drove to the hardware store to buy plywood to cover up the broken window since Mrs. Hardy wasn’t sure how soon the insurance adjuster would come by. The three friends had returned in a happy mood joking and teasing each other. Frank wasn’t concerned when he saw his mother standing outside. It wasn’t until he got a good look at her face that he knew something was wrong. His first thoughts were of his dad. “Mom, what’s wrong – is it Dad?” Frank looked worriedly at Laura. Biff and Joe hadn’t noticed Laura’s worried expression as they got out of the car and started to remove the plywood from the trunk of the car. “Your father is fine…it’s Chet and Iola.” Laura gazed at Joe. “They were in an accident…” “What?! Are they all right?” asked Biff as he dropped the plywood on the ground. “Mrs. Morton said that Chet was conscious when he was found…” “Iola…what about Iola?” asked Joe. “I don’t know, honey. Mrs. Morton was called away, she didn’t get a chance to tell me about Iola.” “What hospital are they at?” asked Frank. “Bayport General.” Without saying another word, Joe snatched the car keys from Frank’s hand and jumped inside the car. “Joe wait! You can’t…!” Frank had to move out of the way as Joe sped out of the driveway. “Come one, we can ride double on your motorbike!” Biff grabbed Frank by the arm tugging him towards the garage. “Don’t worry Mom, we’ll catch up to him…maybe we’ll get lucky and Joe will get pulled over.” Frank assured his mother before he ran to follow Biff into the garage.
Joe didn’t know how he had arrived safely at the hospital. Once he had reached the downtown area, he had been lucky and caught every green light and hadn’t been stopped for speeding – although Joe was sure he wouldn’t have allowed himself to be pulled over until he reached the hospital entrance anyway. He parked the car in front of the emergency entrance, not caring if it got towed as he got out and ran inside. Scanning the crowded waiting area, Joe finally saw Chet sitting next to his parents. “Chet!” Trying to make his way as fast as he could, Joe walked quickly over to the Mortons. Hearing his name Chet looked up and saw Joe heading his way. Slowly standing up, he went to go meet his friend half way. “Joe what are you doing here?” “Your mom called mine…what happened – are you okay?” “I’ve been better. Am I glad my grandpa special ordered those seatbelts when he originally bought the Queen!” Chet gave Joe a small smile. “To answer your other question…I was driving Iola to the mall when this guy started using his car as a battering ram!” “Do you know who it was?” Joe had a feeling more of Spike’s friends had caused the accident. “I’m not sure but I thought I recognized one of them. Our neighbor Mr. Reynolds almost crashed into them – he got a better look, plus Shane, his son, got the license plate. “I’m glad you’re okay….um….how’s Iola? Is she….I don’t see her…” “You like her don’t you?” asked Chet soflty. “What?!...No….I mean…..yeah…she’s a good…friend!” Chet smiled as Joe’s face turned several shades of red. “It’s okay Joe – Iola likes you too…she really likes you.” A goofy grin spread across Joe’s face then he grew more serious. “Is she okay? Was she badly hurt?” “Oh…the sheriff was worried because Iola was still unconscious. And the ambulance was still on its way, so he decided to meet it half way but she regained consciousness about two minutes after we left. She’s getting some x-rays and some kind of scan. The doctor is concerned about the head trauma.” “So she’s going to be all right?” Joe’s face was filled with concern. “Yea I’d say she is…especially the stuff she was saying when she opened her eyes. Man I never knew Iola could swear like a sailor!” Chet chuckled. Joe had to laugh, having been on the business end of Iola’s temper a few times. Although he was surprised that she could ‘swear like a sailor’! “Can…can I see her? I mean…just to make sure that she’s really….you know….okay.” Joe muttered. “Sure, we’re just waiting for them to put Iola in a room. The doctor wants to keep her overnight since she was unconscious for almost ten minutes.” Joe smiled his thanks and was following Chet over to the Mortons when he heard a familiar voice call out his name. He turned around and saw a very angry Frank striding over. “Uh-oh I’m in trouble big time!” “What did you do?” asked Chet. “I drove the car over here….alone!” “‘Oh yeah’…” Chet thought “...’big time trouble’!”
