Six
months. Chet
Morton heaved a sad sigh. Six months had gone by since she left. Once,
again he wished things could have been different. That she could have
stayed. But Chet knew the Hardys were right. The Network would have used
her the same way the Assassins had wanted to. A
frown came to his face. Assassins. Chet wished he never heard of them or
the Network. If it weren’t for them, Carolyn would still be here. ‘No,
that’s not true,’ Chet thought. If the Assassins had never known
about Carolyn’s telekinetic abilities, she never would have come to
Bayport. Chet would have never met her….would have never fallen in
love. Chet
looked out the window when he heard the familiar sounds of the mail
truck. His heart thumped with excitement when the truck stopped in front
of his mailbox. Jumping off the couch, Chet ran downstairs and out the
door. He was hoping to hear from his cousin Mark. Joe
had warned Chet to keep up his normal correspondence with his cousin. Mr.
Gray would probably have someone watching any mail that arrived for him,
and Chet couldn't risk anyone finding out Carolyn’s whereabouts.
With some reluctance, he wrote his usual twice-a-month letter to
his cousin. Chet
found a large envelope addressed to him in the mailbox. “Simmons
Prize center,” he read. Ripping open the envelope, he found a prize
award letter inside. “This
is so cool! I’ve got to call Joe.” On
the opposite side of the road, a man stood concealed in a wooded area. He
adjusted the earpiece he was wearing as he moved the small satellite dish
in his hand. He listened quietly to the phone conversation. A few minutes
later the man took out his cell phone. “The
package has been delivered. Yes, they know; they should be arriving on
the specified date as planned. We’ll have the girl back soon and get
rid of those annoying Hardy brothers as well.”
******* The
young girl sat in her room. Her once long brown hair was now cut short.
No longer weighed down by its length, her hair curled softly around her
face. Her soft blue eyes
gazed sadly at the picture she held in her hands. There
was a knock on her door. “Come
in.” “Carolyn,
Mary Twofeathers is looking for you. She said she has something important
to tell you. She’s waiting for you at the school yard.” “Thanks,
Mark. Have you…have you heard from Chet today?” “Not
today, but I should be hearing from him soon.” Giving
her a small smile, Mark left. Carolyn slipped on a pair of moccasins and
went to meet with Mary Twofeathers. She wondered what Mary had to tell
her. Did she have another dream? Carolyn
saw Mary Twofeathers sitting on a bench; her gray hair pulled into two
braids that fell down her back. Mary turned her round weathered face and
smiled at Carolyn. “I
knew you would come right away.” “Of
course, I would never offend an elder.” “You
are a good person, Carolyn. I wasn’t going to say anything but now I
know that I must. I have been dreaming about you. At first I wasn’t
sure if the dreams were about you, but I know now that they were.” “What
did you see? Are my friends in danger?” Mary
smiled at Carolyn. “You ask about your friends but not about
yourself.” Turning
to look out at the horizon, Mary continued: “In my dream there is a
spirit; this spirit is hard to see, it blends into its surroundings. He
waits patiently for your return. There are three warriors. They are brave
but one rushes in, never thinking about himself but only the safety of
those he loves. The second, he waits, he thinks before he fights. The
third, although brave, is a reluctant warrior. He fights because he knows
it is the right thing to do.” A
sudden breeze caused them to shiver. “There
is another spirit; it has no soul. It waits. It plans. This spirit will
call to you. It will call to the three warriors. It will use them…use
them to get to you.” Let the author know what you think of this story
