THE CHAPTERS |
Chet was scared, very scared, but he didn’t want the two men up in the control room to know it. He glared up at Dr. Warner and Raymond White as the two Assassins chained him to the wall. Chet didn’t know what they were up to, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know! He became curious when Samantha walked into the room…suddenly the lights went out. “Hey! What’s going on!” Chet shouted. The only answer he got was a sinister giggle from Samantha. ****** Carolyn saw the bowl that still sat outside of the cage. She knelt down to examine it when the baboon started to get excited. “Hey, what’s wrong with big and hairy?” Joe asked. The baboon pulled on Carolyn’s arm, as if he were trying to get her to follow him. Her curiosity piqued, Carolyn did just that; she let the baboon lead her out of the small habitat. Frank, Joe and Biff followed behind her. They came upon a door; the baboon sat down, pointed over to the cage, and then at the door. “Frank,” Carolyn turned to face him. “You said someone was in that cage. I think I know who that someone was.” “Me too, and it looks like they took him somewhere else and our little friend here saw them take Chet away.” “But why would he do that? I mean, how does he know we’re looking for Chet and that he’s in trouble?” Biff looked first at Frank and then at the baboon. “I know why,” Carolyn replied. “That bowl I found, it still had some of the mush they feed the baboons. I bet you anything Chet gave it to our friend here.” Biff grimaced with disgust. “I would have too.” “Come on, I know how to get to the Assassins’ liar. Dr. Tyler and I came here every day before we escaped. Stay close and follow me.” Giving the baboon a gentle push towards the habitat, Carolyn led the boys out into the hallway. His hands clenched into fists, Joe was prepared for action. Walking beside Carolyn, Frank was on the alert for any surprises that might leap out of the shadows. Following behind Joe, Biff also had his fists clenched, just waiting to punch out an Assassin. Although she appeared calm, Carolyn was anything but that. She knew that she would need to rely on her past training with the Assassins. Carolyn cleared her mind, focusing on her surroundings. Waiting for the attack. “I don’t like this,” Joe whispered to Frank. “Me either, we should have run into an Assassin or two by now.” “We won’t,” Carolyn murmured softly. “At least not until we reach our destination. They want us to come. They’re waiting.” “Wonderful,” Biff mumbled. As they turned down a hallway, Carolyn saw the darkened room at the end. She stopped, and had the boys gather around in a circle. “I have a feeling they’re in there. That’s the room I was trained in. There’s another room just above it; I’m sure Dr. Warner will be watching us. Take down as many Assassins as you can, but leave Samantha to me." ”They’re going to blind us with a bright light, aren’t they?” “Yes, Frank. You can count on that.” “What are we waiting for? Let’s go get Chet!” Joe was ready for action and payback! Before Frank could stop him, Joe ran down the hallway, heading straight for the room at the end of the hall. “Boy, did Mary Twofeathers have Joe pegged!” Frank growled in frustration as he went after his brother. As they got closer to the room, they found that there was a small amount of light inside. Standing in the doorway, Frank and Joe saw Chet, a spotlight shining down on him. ****** Chet’s eyesight was just adjusting to the darkness when a light shone down on him. He blinked his eyes for a few seconds, finding that he could see the doorway. Chet blinked again, not sure if his mind was playing tricks on him. “Chet, you all right?” “I am now, Joe. Is Frank with you?” “You bet I am, Chet!” Frank smiled over at his friend. Suddenly they heard Samantha’s voice. “Joe, Frank, thank goodness you’re here! Chet said you’d rescue us!” “Don’t believe her, guys! She’s one of them!” Carolyn pushed past Frank and Joe. “Oh, they already know Chet….Okay, Dr. Warner, I’m here now; let my friend go!” As Carolyn stepped inside the room it instantly became bright. ****** Fenton Hardy stepped off the plane; he waited for his friend and partner Sam Radley to disembark. His face set in an angry mask as he thought about the evening phone call he had received . Fenton had recognized the voice; there was no one else he knew with such a bland non-descript voice. “Your sons are in trouble”That was enough to send Fenton flying out of his house. “Do you see him?” Sam stood beside his friend. “No, but he’s here.” “I told Jack to wait for us at the hotel. He said to call if we need any help.” A small smile crossed Fenton’s face; he could always count on Jack Wayne. The two men strode over to the car rental window; no one was up front. “Ring bell for Service,” Fenton read the small sign; he hit the bell with some impatience. Two minutes later, a rather ordinary man came to the window. “May I help you, sir?” “Hello, Arthur. What kind of trouble have you gotten my sons into now?” ******* The security guard went inside the laboratory; he wondered what was upsetting the baboons. Always noisy, they were down right deafening at that moment. He was surprised to find the door unlocked; he unholstered his gun as he went inside. He flicked on the light switch; the baboons suddenly became quiet. “What in the world is going on?” Stepping closer to the baboons, he felt something land on his chest. “What the…oh, gross!” The gray-bearded baboon let out a cry, the guard let out a scream as he was bombarded with spit and animal feces thrown by the baboons. Ducking for cover, the guard never saw the five baboons run out the still open door.
