THE CHAPTERS |
Frank and Joe knew they would be momentarily blinded once the light was turned on. They prepared themselves by listening closely for anything out of the ordinary. As the light brightened the room, they heard it: someone was rappelling down from the ceiling. Frank heard the soft thud as the person landed on the floor. In an instant, Frank spun around with a high kick to the Assassin’s face. He smiled with satisfaction when he felt the heel of his foot connect with the enemy’s face. Joe also didn’t hesitate as he swung his foot out, causing the Assassin to trip and fall. Jumping on top of him, Joe struck him in the face knocking the Assassin unconscious. Already knowing the outcome, Carolyn was ready for the attack. As two more Assassins were rappelling down, they suddenly found themselves flying headlong into each other, landing unconscious on the ground. Samantha moved away from the wall to stand in front of Chet. Biff had a slight advantage; he was still standing in the hallway when the lights were turned on. The sudden brightness didn’t bother him as he ran into the room. He saw Frank and Joe fighting their way towards Chet. Biff headed over to them. Carolyn and Samantha stared intently at each other. “I don’t want to hurt you,” Carolyn said with a sad note in her voice. Samantha smirked. “You’re the one about to get hurt.” “Carolyn, behind you!” Chet warned. A downed Assassin had groggily gotten to his feet; seeing his chance, he pulled out a knife. Nearing Carolyn, he raised his hand, ready to strike…. Biff sidelined him with a tackle. As they fell to the ground, the Assassin dropped the knife. Twisting his body as he tried to reach the knife, Biff grabbed the Assassin’s arm and pulled it back. While Biff wrestled with the Assassin, Samantha caused Carolyn to go flying across the room, but Carolyn was able to prevent herself from slamming into the wall. Wanting to wipe the smirk from Samantha’s face, she body-slammed her onto the floor, where Samantha lay moaning at Chet’s feet. “Boy, that must have hurt,” Chet chuckled. Seeing Samantha down on the floor, Joe called out to Frank, “I’m going after Chet!” But Samantha wasn’t out yet, and proved it as she hurled Joe away from Chet. Joe waited for the impact, but he abruptly stopped in mid-air and fell gently to the ground. Frank was soon by his side. “Joe are you okay?” “Yeah, now I know how a rag doll feels like.” “Hey guys…a little help here!” Biff called out as he struggled with an Assassin. ****** Fenton still couldn’t believe what Arthur Gray had told him. It had all been a ruse…a lie….The contest…the prize. The worst part was, the Network had known from the very beginning. They had used Chet the same way the Assassins had. “I cannot believe you would use my sons and their friends this way!” “Frank and Joe were never meant to be involved.” “That’s a bunch of bull and you know it!” Fenton yelled. “You knew Chet would invite them! Tell me Arthur, is this payback because my sons made your men look like fools by stealing Carolyn from right under their noses?!” “I don’t play that way and you know it!” “Just remember one thing, Arthur, you’re not the only one who has friends in high places. If my sons and their friends have so much as a scratch…I’ll make damn sure the only Government job you can get is in the mailroom.” The two men glared at each other, neither wanting to be the first to back down. Sam sat back in his seat, an amused smile on his face. He wondered who was more stubborn, Fenton or Arthur Gray? This could be a long ride, Sam thought. There was a slight cough heard from the driver. “Excuse me, sir, but the first group has already arrived. Agent Kirkpatrick informs me that there are no guards at the gate.” “Damn! We may be too late…tell Kirkpatrick to go in there! Weapons at the ready…and to make sure no harm comes to the civilians!” ****** “I told you she wasn’t ready,” Dr. Warner kept muttering over and over. “Shut up, Andrew! I can see, you know!” Raymond snarled back as he watched Carolyn slam Samantha into the wall again. Then something rather strange caught his eye. “What the hell are those baboons doing in here?”
