THE CHAPTERS |
The Network agents sped past the security gate, the cars screeching to a halt, agents jumping out and racing inside the Institute. Before his vehicle came to a stop, Fenton was already leaping from the moving car, with Sam Radley following right behind him. They stood in the middle of the lobby; Fenton calmly walked over to the security desk. “What are you doing, Fent?” “I’m looking for Frank and Joe,” Fenton replied as he sat in front of the security video monitors. “All I have to do is find the room with the most carnage going on and….BINGO! Suite number 10115.” Sam peered over Fenton’s shoulder; there on the screen was a room full of bodies, some lying unconscious on the ground, some fighting. “Fenton are those…monkeys?!” “Actually I think they’re baboons. Come on, let’s go!” Finding a directory, Fenton ran down a hallway. Taking one last look at the video monitor, Sam wondered how baboons got into the room. ***** Ten minutes earlier, Frank and Joe were wondering the same thing. They were pulling an Assassin off Biff when they heard a blood-curdling scream. With the boys’ attention diverted, the Assassin pulled himself free from Frank and Joe. He then screamed in terror as a baboon jumped on him, knocking him to the ground. The animal bared its teeth, its red-rimmed eyes glaring down at him. Helping Biff up, Frank saw several more baboons intimidating the other Assassins. Turning to look over at Carolyn, Frank noticed the old bearded baboon sitting by Chet’s feet. “Come on, we’ll be safer with Chet.” Carolyn was kneeling beside an unconscious Samantha, checking her pulse. “How is she?” Joe knelt beside Carolyn. “I didn’t want to hurt her.” Carolyn looked imploringly at Joe. “I know. but you had to defend yourself, Carolyn,” Joe softy replied. “Joe’s right, Carolyn. That Assassin, the big blonde one, he wanted to kill you,” Chet said. Reaching inside his pocket, Frank took out a small lock pick kit. “Let’s get you out of here.” “You don’t really think I’d let you leave here.” They turned as one, looking up at the glass window and seeing Raymond White scowling at them. Suddenly the glass exploded into tiny pieces. Dr. Warner screamed with fright. Shaking in fear, he gazed down at Carolyn. It took a second for everyone to notice the baboons had grown silent. The baboons were staring at Dr. Warner, or rather at his white lab coat. A fierce hatred coursed through their bodies. The white coat symbolized hurt…pain…loss…and death. Two of the baboons were swinging on the rappelling ropes; they began to swing towards the window. Not comprehending what was happening, Dr. Warner never moved. By the time he realized what the baboons were going to do, it was too late. Raymond knew what was going to happen next; he calmly turned to leave. Joe ran over to a rappelling rope that was closest to the window and began to climb. “Joe, what are you doing?” Frank yelled. “I’m going after big and blonde!” “Biff, help Carolyn and Chet out of here. I’m going after Joe.” Frank ran after his brother. Biff, figuring that Carolyn wouldn’t want to leave Samantha behind, very carefully lifted her in his arms. Holding onto Carolyn, Chet walked out, Biff walking behind them as he cradled Samantha in his arms. As they were stepping out of the room, they encountered a very familiar and welcome face. “Mr. Hardy, what are you doing here?!” Chet exclaimed. “I thought I was coming to your rescue. Where are Joe and Frank?” “They went after an Assassin.” Carolyn pointed out a small door a few steps away. “Go up those stairs; it’ll lead you to floor they’re on.” “May I suggest that Mr. Radley lead the children to safety and I’ll go with you? I have a feeling that the Assassin Joe and Frank are chasing is very dangerous. More so than Alexander Black.” No one had seen Mr. Gray come up behind them and were a bit startled when he spoke. “I’ll take them, but I’m coming after you, Fenton, when I’m done.” “Wouldn’t have it any other way, Sam.” “Lean against me, Chet,” Sam said as he put his arm around his waist. ***** Frank saw Joe’s blonde head. “Joe wait up!” Hearing his brother, Joe waited for Frank to catch up to him. He didn’t know why, something told him to wait. Giving Frank a few minutes to catch his breath, Joe pointed down the hallway. “He went down that corridor.” “You sure?” “Yeah, you can’t miss him…the guy is huge!” “Let’s try and find a weapon or something we can use to defend ourselves, if he’s that big.” Frank and Joe hurried down the corridor, searching for anything they might use as a weapon and staying alert for any surprises. Joe was walking slightly ahead of Frank; they were passing an open doorway when Joe was grabbed by the scruff of his neck. Frank moved towards his brother. “Unless you want me to break his neck, I’d stay right where you are.”
