CHAPTER 17

Frank kept his eyes locked on Joe as the Assassin held tightly to his brother’s neck. Joe had tried to pry the hand loose from his neck, but that only infuriated the Assassin as he shook Joe like a rag doll.

“Stop that, or I’ll kill your brother instead of you.”

Joe immediately put his hands down to his side; there was no way he would let anyone hurt Frank.

“Since you seem so intent on following me, I’m going to let you two tag along with me.”

“We’re not allowed to go anywhere with strangers,” Joe stated somewhat sarcastically.

Frank almost let out a groan when he heard Joe’s comment. He was relieved when the Assassin laughed.

“I guess that would only be fair since I already know who you are. Raymond White…Alexander Black’s protégé.”

“Who exactly is this Raymond White?” Fenton asked the Gray Man.

“A young man who grew up in the streets, the perfect candidate to become an Assassin. Somehow or other, Alexander Black found Raymond, took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew. Only thing was…the student far outshone the teacher.”

“Is White the one who masterminded this whole plan?”

“Yes, I believe so. Fenton…” Arthur Gray paused, and Fenton was surprised to see a true look of concern on the agent’s face. “He’s out for revenge…he means to kill your sons.”

Raymond slammed Joe up against the wall.

“Hey!” Frank yelled angrily.

“What, feeling left out?” Raymond smirked at Frank. Before Frank realized what he was going to do, Raymond lashed his arm out and shoved him against the wall next to Joe.  Frank felt something cold and hard pressed against the back of his head. He heard a soft metallic click and knew it was a gun.

“Now, you’re going to do exactly as I say. You and your brother are coming with me. Either of you tries to escape and I will not hesitate to shoot.”

“You might as well give up, White. I’m sure our friends have called the police by now.”  At least that’s what Frank hoped.

“The police!” Raymond gasped in mock terror. “Good, it’s been boring as hell over here. Now move it!” He shoved Frank and then Joe further down the corridor, but suddenly a shot rang out.

“Let the Hardys go, White!”

Not wanting Joe to be in the line of fire, Frank pushed him away when he felt Raymond’s hand on his shoulder. Not expecting Frank to push him, Joe stumbled a few steps before he tripped and fell down onto the floor. Joe rolled across the floor, coming to a stop in front of another open doorway.

“Not again!” Joe mumbled as he felt a pair of hands grab hold of his shirt collar.

“Are you hurt Joe?”

“Sam?”

Once Radley had gotten Chet, Biff and Carolyn safely out, plus finding someone to take care of Samantha. He ran back into the building, wanting to find a back entrance. He corned, then intimidated one of the security guards.

Joe and Frank never knew how close they and Raymond White had been to an exit.  Sam had seen Raymond push Frank into the wall; thinking quickly, he had ducked inside a small storage closet. He had planned to wait till the boys walked past, then jump Raymond from behind.

Instead, Frank was now being used as a human shield. At least he had gotten Joe out of harm’s way.

Holding Frank in front of him, his gun jammed into Frank’s neck, Raymond stared coldly at Fenton Hardy and Arthur Gray. Frank looked over at his father, giving him a weak smile to let him know he was okay.

“Let the boy go, Raymond,” demanded the Gray Man. “My men have this building surrounded, there’s nowhere for you to go.”

“No, I think I’m going to keep Frank here a little bit longer. And you’re going to tell your men to leave.”

“You know I can’t do that.”

“Well then…I guess we’re at what they call a Mexican stand-off. Because I’m not giving Frank up.”

To prove his point, Raymond pulled Frank closer to him.

“What are they waiting for?” Joe snarled in frustration.

Sam didn’t answer; he quietly stepped out into the hallway, his gun drawn, waiting for his opening. Then he got it; as Raymond pulled Frank, he moved his gun so it was no longer jammed against the boy’s neck.

That’s when Sam blew Raymond’s left knee out.

When Frank no longer felt the cold metal of the gun he quickly shifted his body to the right. He heard a gunshot and felt Raymond buckle, and heard him let out a scream of pain. Two more shots rang out.

Joe’s heart leaped to his throat when he saw his brother fall to the floor along with Raymond White. He ran past Sam, dropping to the floor when he reached Frank.

“Frank! Where’re you shot?” Joe asked as he searched for any wounds.

“Will you stop patting me!? I’m fine! He had a tight grip on my shirt, that’s why I fell.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah Joe, I’m sure.”

“Good,” Joe breathed a sigh of relief then punched Frank in the shoulder.

“Hey! First you check if I’m shot and then you beat me!?”

“That’s for pushing me out of the way! Don’t ever do that again!”
