THE CHAPTERS |
Raymond White was dead. Shot in the shoulder by Fenton Hardy. Shot right between the eyes by Arthur Gray. The Network agents managed to capture a few Assassins alive. Dr. Warner was still alive…barely. Two baboons had savagely beaten him. The baboons had been recaptured but they were no longer in the Institute. Chet was being examined by an EMT; although he did have some bruising on his mid-section, he did not want to be taken to a hospital. “Chet, I would really feel a lot better if you had a doctor check you out,” Fenton told him. “I’m fine, Mr. Hardy, honestly I am. Yeah, it hurt when he punched me but I’m okay now. Just really hungry.” Letting the EMT’s know of Chet’s decision, Fenton turned to find Sam talking with Arthur Gray. Turning in the opposite direction, he sought out Frank and Joe, and saw them standing with Chet, Biff and Carolyn. The five teens seemed to be in a conspiratorial huddle. “Fenton,” the Gray Man called out. “I’m sorry, but Carolyn needs to come with me. I know Frank and Joe are going to make a protest, but she will be safer with us.” “After today, I’d have to agree with you. She’s standing over there with Chet and the boys.” Looking where Fenton had pointed, the Gray Man saw the four boys standing haphazardly together. Carolyn was nowhere in sight. “I thought you said she was with Chet?” “She is, she’s standing right over…” Fenton turned to look over at the teenagers. He was surprised to see only the four boys. “She was standing right there, Arthur, I swear she was there less than a minute ago!” Bristling with anger, Gray strode over to Frank and Joe. “Where is she? Where is Carolyn?” “She’s not with you?” Frank asked. “She said she wanted to talk with you!” Joe claimed. “Chet, have you seen Carolyn?” Frank questioned his friend. “She was here a second ago,” Chet replied. “I think she had to use the ladies room,” Biff supplied. “Oh man!” Joe said, feigning terror. “What if some stray Assassins got her?” “We should go look for her!” Frank took hold of Joe’s arm, pulling him away from the Gray Man. With a sidelong glance, Fenton stared over at his partner who was laughing quietly. Fenton could see Sam’s shoulders shaking as he tried to keep from laughing out loud. Walking over to Sam, Fenton could hear his sons, along with Chet and Biff, calling out for Carolyn. “Sam, do you know anything about this?” “Who,” Sam sputtered, “me?” “Yeah…YOU!” “I know nuthink! I see nuthink! I hear nuthink!” “All right, Sgt. Shultz, let’s go gather up my sons.” Fenton put an arm around his friend, and the two men started walking towards the boys. As they were passing the Gray Man, Fenton smiled sweetly at him. “By the way Arthur, is there any way you could loan us a car? I’m not sure what Frank did with the rental.” ******* With some great reluctance, the Gray Man did loan Fenton a car. Once he gathered Frank, Joe, Chet and Biff together, Fenton drove them back to the mini-van. Taking the lead, Fenton glanced in his rearview mirror to check on the van. For some reason, Frank had slowed down his speed and pulled over to the side. The passenger door opened, a slim figure ran out from the wooded area and jumped into the van. The door slammed shut and the van sped up to catch up with Fenton’s car. “Sam, how many passengers do you see riding in the mini van?” “Um…well I can see Frank and Joe sitting up front…I can barely make out Chet and Biff. That would make four, why?” “Oh, no reason…No reason at all.”
“I think Dad saw us,” Joe said. “He did, but I don’t think he’ll say anything about it.” “Nice to have you back, Carolyn.” “Thanks Joe, but how am I going to get back to the reservation?” Carolyn sat next to Chet, Biff having scrunched up into the small back space of the mini van. “We’ll think of something.” Joe replied.
As luck would have it, they didn’t have to. Arriving back in the city, the Hardys learned that a Native American Indian dance was being presented in front of the Alamo. They convinced their father and Sam that they just had to see the dance being presented. Carolyn tucked her hair into a baseball cap, and Joe gave her one of his rock T-shirts. Disguised as a young boy -- although Frank hoped no one looked at her shoes -- Carolyn stood with Chet as they watched the show. She gave Chet’s arm a light squeeze when she saw Mary Twofeathers standing off to the side. Slowly making her way over, Carolyn soon blended into the crowd. Joe stood by his friend’s side, noting the sadness in his eyes. “This is for the best, Chet.” “I know. I’ll be okay, Joe.” Chet gave him a sad smile.
The dance had ended, the crowd began to disperse. Chet and Joe were about to look for Frank and Biff when an elderly woman appeared in front of them. She smiled at Chet and took his hands, holding them tightly. “She will return again one day.” With a slight nod of her head, she turned and walked away. Chet, his heart now filled with hope, smiled happily at Joe. “See, I told you I’d be okay.” Joe watched as the old woman walked away, then turned to Chet, who seemed to have a cheerier attitude. For some reason, Joe knew that Chet would be okay.
