CHAPTER 25

The blonde youth stared intently at his opponent; his sapphire blue eyes gleamed with excitement. A soft breeze caused the front fringe of his hair to flop into his eyes. Joe Hardy quickly pushed his hair back as he kept his eye on the brown-haired youth in front of him.

“You need a haircut,” Frank said, smiling at his brother.

Joe just grunted as he watched Frank dribble the basketball. Suddenly Frank moved to his left, Joe did the same but at the last moment Frank moved to his right. Joe quickly spun in a circle and ran after Frank, who was about to throw the basketball into the hoop.

A huge grin on his face, Frank threw the ball up and over Joe’s block.

“He shoots! He scores! Wooo!!!”

Frank and Joe turned around, both smiling at the person who was now doing a little victory dance.

“Chet you are such a…a…DORK!”

“That’s ‘upperclassman dork’ to you, Joseph Hardy!” Chet sniffed haughtily.

“You passed! Congratulations, Chet!” Frank gave his friend a pat on the back.

“You got your report card today?” Joe seemed a little worried.

Noting Joe’s worried expression, Frank stared sternly at him.

“Joe, why do you look like you wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole? Did you flunk a class?”

“No! I mean…I don’t think so. Only…” Joe began to blush furiously as he continued: “Remember I had to take that…that Home Ec. Class?”

Frank and Chet snorted gleefully, then tried to be a little more serious as Joe glared at them.

“Sorry…yeah, I remember.”

“Well, I was supposed to make a skirt, but I had a hard time following the pattern. Even though Mom offered to help…I thought I could do it myself!”

“And…” Frank could tell there was more to Joe’s tale.

“I…um…IcheatedandboughtaskirtfromthestoreandtookoffallthetagsandpretendedImadeit.” Joe said in one breath.

“You did what?”

“I think he said…” Chet started to reply.

“I know what he said! Joe, how could you?!”

“I couldn’t help it Frank! I’ve never felt so guilty in my life!”

Frank wanted to shake some sense into Joe, but seeing his forlorn face, he sighed and put his arm around his brother.

“Maybe they’ll let you take it again next school year. I don’t think you’d have to go to summer school.”

“Yeah,” Chet added: “besides, I think they let you know before school lets out if you have to attend the summer classes.”

“I hope not, I’d sure hate to lose out on a whole summer of fun just because I don’t know how to sew. But I’ll tell you one thing, big brother…never again!”

Frank smiled. “I’m glad you learned that cheating never pays.”

“Oh, yeah that too…I meant I’m never taking a Home Ec class again!”

Chet burst out laughing as Frank got Joe into a headlock, wrestling his baby brother to the ground. Chet jumped out of the way, not wanting to get hit as the two brothers fought playfully.

The sudden appearance of the mail truck caused Frank and Joe to stop. Trying to untangle themselves, they scrambled off the ground and ran to the mailbox. The reached the mailbox at the same time, and Frank playfully pushed Joe out of the way.

“Hey! Is that any way to treat your favorite brother?!” Joe said as he gently shoved Frank.

“Favorite brother…you’re my only brother!” Frank replied as he pushed Joe out of the way again.

Chet started laughing again as he watched Frank and Joe continue to tease each other. No one saw Mrs. Hardy come outside and walk towards the mailbox.

“Boys, if you’re going to act like three-year-olds…would you mind moving aside so I can get the mail?”

“Sorry, Mom,” mumbled Joe and Frank.

Chuckling softly, her light blue eyes twinkling with laugher, Laura took out the mail.

“Bills, bills, more bills…hmm…seems your report cards have come in.”

Opening Frank’s first, Laura smiled then gave Frank a kiss on the cheek.

“Very good, Frank. Now let’s see how well you did, Joe.”

Joe waited nervously as his mother opened the envelope.

“Oh, this is excellent Joe! Your grades improved from the last semester. Even your Home Economics grade improved. You went from a ‘D’ to a ‘C’.”

Laura gave Joe a hug and a kiss. She congratulated Chet when he told her about his passing grades.

“Lunch is ready; Chet, you’re more than welcome to stay,” Laura said as she walked back to the house.

“Thank you, Mrs. Hardy.”

“Come on Joe, let’s go get cleaned up. You are joining us, right Chet?”

“Me, miss one of your mom’s lunches? Of course I’m coming in!”

As the three boys headed for the house, Joe kept mumbling quietly.

“I can’t believe I passed Home Ec.”
