CHAPTER 25

Andrea was preparing lunch when she heard the sound of laughter. She turned around and saw a very drenched Callie walk into the camp, Andrea noticed she had on a T-shirt over her wet clothes. Vanessa and Carolyn were walking just slightly behind her. Carolyn had a concerned expression on her face; Vanessa was trying very hard to look concerned, but the smile that kept appearing on her face dispelled that. Frank was walking behind them; he was also wet to the bone. Chet and Joe followed behind; it was their laughter that Andrea had heard. Like Vanessa, they also tried to appear concerned but every time they laughed, Frank would turn around and glare at them. This would cause Chet and Joe to become very serious…for about two seconds.

“Oh my goodness! Callie, what happened to you…are you all right?”

“I’m fine, Mrs. Bender, just a little accident. All my fault, really, I should have listened to Frank.” She gave Andrea a smile, then turned around. “Joe, thanks for loaning me your shirt.”

Callie then disappeared into the tent to change, Frank waited for a moment then left with Joe to change into some dry clothes as well. Carolyn went into Mary’s tent, and was surprised not to find her there.

“Excuse me, Mrs. Bender, but do you know where Mary is?”

“She drove into town to buy some hot dogs to roast later tonight.”

“Oh, a wiener roast! Yummy!” said Vanessa excitedly. “Do you need any help, Mom?”

“No, I’m fine. Why don’t you help Chet clean those fish?”

“Ugh! I’d rather clean up my room!” grimaced Vanessa.

                                      *****

“I don’t know why you’re asking me that question, Mary.”

Crossing her arms, she glared at Arthur Gray and regretted the day she ever met him.

“Leave her alone, Arthur. Let her have a normal life!”

“Mary, you know I can’t do that. We need her. Did you know that the Assassins recruited others just like her?”

 “Yes, she told me.”

“All we want is for her to help us find them.”

A doubtful look crossed Mary’s face. “Is that all?”

Arthur Gray shifted uncomfortably; she always did intimidate him, the strength that she conveyed was overwhelming. Mary grunted in disgust.

“I thought so. She’s not a killer, Arthur, she never was.”

 “She’s been trained…”

“Did you know she was being programmed to kill Fenton Hardy?”

Seeing the surprised look on his face, Mary knew that the Gray Man had not knowledge of this information.

“When she turned fifteen the Assassins would take her into a room. She was placed in a chair; a video monitor was suspended above. The Assassins would then show a montage of pictures featuring Fenton Hardy, then a voice recording would play. Do you want to know what it said?”

“No, I think I know,” the Gray Man sighed. “That’s why she needs to come with me!”

Mary stepped forward, her face almost touching the Gray Man’s.

“I may be retired but I still outrank you and I still have top clearance! If I see any Network agents you will live to regret the day I saved your life!”

Mary stomped angrily away; she had reached the Hummer when she remembered that she hadn’t bought the hot dogs. She stood outside for a few moments, taking deep, calm breaths. When she went back inside the store, Arthur Gray was gone.

                                        ******

Frank dressed quickly; he wanted to make sure that Callie was okay. He was pleasantly surprised to find her smiling and in a good mood. When she saw him, she jumped up and ran over to him, pulling him away from everyone else.

“Frank, I’m sorry. I should have listened to you. But I wanted to look nice for you…”

“You did, you looked beautiful! I was afraid you were going to be angry because I caused you to fall in the lake!”

Callie giggled. “That was an accident. I’ll tell you one thing though! When we get back home, I’m having a long talk with my dad! He has no idea what it means to be roughing it!”
