THE CHAPTERS |
As dusk was falling, Chet and Carolyn had taken a walk. They were sitting by the lake, Chet skipping stones. They were both quiet, lost in their own thoughts. Carolyn was worried about Mary. When she had returned from the store, the older woman had been abrupt and edgy. Carolyn sensed that something was bothering her. She caught Mary staring at her, and there was sadness in the woman’s eyes. Carolyn discreetly glanced over at Chet; something told her this would be the last time they would be together. Chet had picked up on Carolyn’s feelings. He could tell that she was sad about something. He thought it had something to do with Mary Twofeathers. Everything had been great until Mary came back from town. Callie had been in a good mood, despite what had happened to her earlier. She had told them what had caused her and Frank to fall into the lake. Callie had everyone laughing; she even joined in the teasing from Joe. Frank pretended to still be upset with him and Joe, playfully getting into a boxer’s stance as he challenged them both to a duel. ‘I must protect my lady’s honor!’ Frank had declared. Callie fluttered her lashes, clasping her hands together as she pretended to swoon, ‘My hero!’ Andrea had almost burned lunch, she had been laughing so much. Then Mary arrived and to Chet she seemed a little distant towards everyone. Although she had smiled and laughed at their antics…underneath, Chet could see that she was bothered by something. “We should be heading back before it gets too dark.” Chet stood up and held out his hand to Carolyn. Nodding her head in agreement, she smiled at him as she took his hand. Still holding onto her hand, Chet felt a great sadness overwhelm him. “I’m not going to see you again, am I?” he asked softly. “I…I don’t know, but…” Carolyn stopped walking, turning to face Chet. “I think you’re right.” They stood gazing into each other’s eyes, trying to memorize the other’s face. Chet then pulled Carolyn close, hugging her tight not wanting to let her go. Hiding behind a tree, Mary silently watched them. Coming to a decision, she went quietly in search of the Hardy brothers. She found them sitting with Callie and Vanessa. “Excuse, me girls, but I need to borrow these strong young men for a bit.” Thinking that Mary wanted them to help carry more firewood, Frank and Joe followed her. They soon arrived at their campsite. “Sit down please, I need to tell you something. And I’m not sure you’re going to like what I’m about to tell you.” Curious to hear what she had to say, Frank and Joe sat forward and waited. ****** Later that night, Frank found that he couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about what Mary had told him and Joe. As Frank lay in his sleeping bag, he could hear Chet snoring softly. He also heard Joe restlessly tossing and turning. ‘I guess I’m not the only one who can’t sleep,’ Frank thought to himself. He crawled out of his sleeping bag, and lightly tapped Joe as he left the tent. Joe was glad there was a full moon out that night as he saw Frank standing several yards away from the tent. “What’s up, big brother?” whispered Joe. “I can’t get what Mary told us out of my head!” “Me either! Who would have thought she used to be a Network operative?!” “Not to mention saving the Gray Man’s life!” “Frank,” Joe said worriedly, “what does this mean for Carolyn?” “I don’t know…I just don’t know.” Frank glanced over at the tent. What about Chet? What does this mean for him?
