THE CHAPTERS |
The Hardy brothers weren’t the only ones having a restless night’s sleep. Mary lay on her blanket staring up at the stars; she would occasionally look over at the tent that Carolyn slept in. She felt a deep sadness within her heart. I must tell her, but will she understand? Will she realize that I never meant to hurt her? Mary sighed as she rolled onto her side and tried to sleep. Carolyn woke up early the next morning; she wanted to speak with Mary. She dressed quickly and quietly and then left the tent. Carolyn wasn’t surprised to find that Mary was already awake, what did surprise her was that it seemed her friend had been waiting for her. “We must talk.” Mary beckoned Carolyn to follow her into the woods. They walked quietly, following the trail leading to the lake. “I want you to know that I never meant to deceive you…I still have my connections and had heard about a child with a great gift…I never knew you were that child…not until Mark brought you to me…during the time your memories were filtering your dreams…” Carolyn listened quietly; she felt a deep despair overwhelm her. All she ever wanted was a normal life! “Are you going to turn me in to Mr. Gray?” she said softly. “No! He may fight for the good of mankind, but he’s no better than the Assassins!” “But we can’t go back to the reservation, can we?” “I don’t know. I may be retired but I still hold a lot of clout in the Network…You see…once in the Network…always in the Network. Oh, I may not go on assignments anymore, but I know too many secrets for them to let me officially go.” ******* Frank and Joe were surprised to see Chet cooking breakfast. They had been sharing their breakfast with the girls. “Morning Chet, what are you cooking?” Joe stretched out the kinks in his back. “Oatmeal.” A heavy sigh followed Chet’s reply. “You feeling okay, Chet?” asked Frank. “I wish we had some milk; oatmeal isn’t oatmeal without some milk.” Frank and Joe looked at each other; there was something wrong with their friend. Chet raised his head to face his two friends. “Do you know how to get hold of Mr. Gray? You do know how to contact him, right? I mean, you’ve worked with him, so you have to communicate with him!” Frank walked over to Chet, sitting by his side. “We know how to contact him. But I need my computer to do that. Why do you need to contact him?” “Because…because I want to tell him to leave Carolyn alone! She’s not an Assassin and she doesn’t want to be a Network agent!” Chet abruptly stood up and began pacing in long angry strides. “The one time a girl actually falls for me and she has to be on the run!...Yeah, I know what you’re thinking…A lot of girls like you Chet!...That’s just it! They like me! But not as a boyfriend, as a friend! Good ol’ Chet, he’s so sweet and nice…He’s such a good friend to have!...It’s just no fair.” Chet had come to a stop, he stood there in defeat, his shoulders slumped his head down. “It’s just not fair.” Joe was the first to reach his side, then Chet felt Frank standing next to him. “No, it’s not fair, Chet. Not fair at all,” Joe said as he hugged him. ***** The oatmeal burned. Chet, Frank and Joe headed over to the other campsite for some breakfast. Although they had wanted to tell Chet about Mary, Frank though it was best to wait. Chet immediately sought out Carolyn, sitting down by her side. He noticed that she was avoiding Mary. Frank and Joe also noticed the distance between them. It was a quiet meal as everyone sensed a certain tension. The meal was suddenly interrupted as three hunters walked into the camp. “Sorry, we didn’t mean to frighten anyone.” Frank and Joe were on the alert; they didn’t think these men were really hunters. For one thing, there was no real game to hunt. It was too early for duck season. Frank happened to glance over at Mary, who seemed a little suspicious of the men also. “What are you hunting?” Joe asked. “Oh…quail.” “How can that be? It’s not quail season yet,” Vanessa blurted out. “I told you that was a stupid idea,” commented the first man as he raised his rifle at the group.
