THE CHAPTERS |
The “leader” of the group, a man in his 30s with reddish-brown hair and brown eyes, turned to Carolyn. “Come with us and no one gets hurt.” Mary stood up and faced the three men; her face set in anger. “Tell Gray he’s going to regret this!” “Ms. Twofeathers, this order comes from someone with a higher authority than Gray. Oh and by the way…your special privileges have been revoked. If you continue disobeying orders…you’ll be put under arrest.” Frank stepped forward; Joe and then Chet were soon by his side. “Excuse me, can I ask you why you want to take our friend? What has she done—what laws has she broken?” “She’s a threat to national security, that’s all I need to know. Now sit down!” Carolyn had been sitting quietly, her head down, feeling terrible that she had caused this trouble. Then she heard a scuffle and Frank shouting angrily…”Leave my brother alone!”…She looked up to see the man with reddish brown hair pushing Frank away, Joe was sitting on the ground glaring up at the Network agent. She slowly stood up, her eyes flashing with anger. Andrea was voicing her displeasure at the way they were being treated, Vanessa and Callie rushed over to Frank and Joe. It took a second for everyone to realize that it had suddenly gotten very quiet. Nothing was stirring, no birds were singing not even the gnats were bothering them. As one they turned towards Carolyn, who stood with her hands clenched and breathing rapidly. The three Network agents yelped in surprise when their rifles shot out of their hands and flew up in the air. They stared in awe as the rifles began to almost spit out the gun shells. Once empty, one by one, each rifle crashed into a tree, smashing into two useless pieces. Carolyn glared at the three men. “I can easily do that to you…I don’t want to be with the Network…I don’t want to be an Assassin…I wan to be able to live a normal life!” The three agents silently nodded as they slowly backed away and left the campsite. Frank helped Joe up off the ground; Chet went over to Carolyn. She slumped against him, grateful for his support.
“I guess this means our camping trip is over,” Callie said sadly. “I’m sure my car is probably fixed by now.” “Those jerks!” Vanessa exclaimed angrily. “Are you okay, Carolyn?” “Yes, I am. I’m just sorry this trip had to end. I was having fun.” “So was I!” declared Callie. This got everyone laughing, as they knew of Callie’s misadventures. Chet and Carolyn gathered up the breakfast dishes while Joe and Frank helped Callie and Vanessa pack. When they were done, the girls followed the boys back to their camp to help them pack things up. The boys followed Mary’s Hummer over to the garage, as they drove through town they found out that there was a fair in town. Wanting Carolyn to have some fun, Mary suggested they stay and go the fairgrounds. This idea was met by enthusiastic cheers from the young teens. “Come on Carolyn, you have to try the bumper cars!” Joe said excitedly. Frank and Chet had gone to get tickets for the rides, Joe and Vanessa stood with Carolyn watching the townspeople and tourists enjoying the bumper car ride. Carolyn laughed every time the cars crashed into each other. “Here’s your ticket, Carolyn.” Chet smiled at her as he handed her the small red paper ticket stub. “Boys against the girls!” Vanessa declared as they ran to choose a car. “You’re on! Loser buys us hot dogs and drinks!” Joe said. “Ha! You’ll be buying ME cotton candy, Joe Hardy!” Vanessa stuck her tongue out at her boyfriend. Soon Joe was chasing after Vanessa, but Carolyn rammed his car from behind. “Wooo! Score one for us!” chortled Vanessa. With a determined gleam in his eye, Joe went after Callie, but this time Vanessa and Carolyn slammed into him. Chet and Frank were too busy laughing to operate their cars as they watched Joe get clobbered by the girls. “Hey! I could use a little help here!” Joe yelled at his brother and friend. “You’re doing fine, baby brother!”
