THE CHAPTERS |
As they walked the fairgrounds, Joe would turn to glare at Frank but then he would break out in a smile. Sure, his brother and Chet had been no help whatsoever! But he really didn’t mind losing to Vanessa, plus he would have bought her the cotton candy anyway. The best part though, he still got a kiss. “Is there any ride you’ve always wanted to go on?” Chet asked Carolyn. He felt his heart beat faster when she smiled up at him. “Actually, yes there is! I saw it on an old movie. Is there a Ferris wheel here?” “Sure, it wouldn’t be a fair without one!” Joe and Vanessa found the Tilt-a-Whirl, Frank and Callie left to get some lemonade. Walking hand in hand, Chet led Carolyn to the Ferris wheel. He smiled at Carolyn’s excitement as they stood in line, laughing as she squealed with delight when they got in their seats. They never saw that Joe had sneaked back to speak to the ride operator. Digging into his pants pocket, Joe gave the operator ten dollars and then ran back to Vanessa. With his arm around her shoulders, Chet snuggled close to Carolyn. As they came up to the top, the Ferris wheel came to a sudden stop. “What happened!” Carolyn gasped. “I don’t know.” “Chet, did you tell that guy to stop the Ferris wheel when we reached the top? That’s what happened in the movie and if you did…well, I’m glad.” “I wish I did, but I’m glad it happened anyway. Carolyn, I…I just want you to know…even though we’ve only spent a short time…Okay, we’ve barely spent any time together! But the time we’ve spent now…right now! It’s been the best time and I’ll never forget this moment for as long as I live!” “I know how you feel, Chet. I won’t forget either. Thank you. Thank you for making me feel like a normal everyday girl.”
While Frank and Callie sat drinking their lemonade, he wondered if Carolyn and Mary would be returning to the reservation. “Frank, I wish there was a way that Carolyn could come back to Bayport.” “So do I, but I don’t know how that would be possible.” “Maybe I can help.” Frank and Callie let out a gasp as Arthur Gray sat down next to them. Frank’s eyes narrowed as he gazed at the Gray Man with suspicion. Callie however, let her feelings be known as she threw her lemonade all over the Gray Man. “You…You…How dare you try and act like you’re a human being?!!! You don’t care what happens to Carolyn except how she can help further your career!!” Callie glared angrily at Gray while Frank looked on in shock. The Gray Man calmly took out a handkerchief and wiped his face. “I can understand why you’re angry, Miss Shaw, but I assure you I had nothing to do with that…fiasco. Even though I still believe that Carolyn would be better off being with the Network…” He paused and raised his hand, silently asking the two teens to let him finish…”How ever, after what happened and…having thought over what Mary Twofeathers has said…I’ve come to the conclusion that…I may be wrong and Carolyn should just be left alone.” “You’re actually admitting that you could be wrong!” Frank said with some glee. “It’s a good thing you said this to me and not my brother.” “Yes I know, but somehow I get the feeling you’re enjoying my confession a little too much.” Frank just smiled, then he became serious. “Are you really on the level about this?” “I am.” “Okay, what did you have in mind?” Callie couldn’t believe that Frank was going to go along with the Gray Man. “Frank, I can’t believe you. How do we know he’s not trying to pull a fast one on us?” Before Frank could answer, the Gray Man spoke. “It’s time for me to repay a debt, Miss Shaw. One that should have been repaid a long time ago.” “It’s about time you paid up, Arthur.” No one had heard Mary walk up; it wasn’t until she spoke that they knew she was there. “So, I’m a few years late. You can charge me interest.”
