CHAPTER 25

Frank wasn’t sure that the Gray Man’s plan would work, but there was nothing he could do about it. He and Callie had been told to go and enjoy the fair while Gray and Mary worked out the details. Frank found his brother at one of the game booths. Vanessa, Chet and Carolyn were standing off to the side cheering him on. Joe picked up the baseball; he took a step back, and eyed the stacked mil bottles as if he were about to strike out the next hitter. Suddenly, the ball zoomed by and the mil bottles came tumbling down.

Chet slapped Joe on the back ,Carolyn clapped her hands and Vanessa gave him a kiss on the cheek. The carnie gave Joe a large teddy bear and complimented him on his throwing.

“For my lady fair!” Joe gave Vanessa a low bow as he handed her the teddy.

 “You big goof!” giggled Vanessa.

“Hey Frank, did you catch Joe’s last throw?” Chet asked.

“I did, way to go, baby brother!”

The group slowly walked down the fairgrounds, Frank saw something that he wanted to try. They headed for the booth; Frank paid for his chance and picked up the rifle. As rows of ducks and bears rolled by, Frank took careful aim. Ping! Ping! Ping! One by one the ducks and bears fell down. Wanting to win Callie a large stuffed bear as well, Frank paid for another chance.

Ping! Ping! Ping! Ping!

Callie happily hugged her pink teddy bear as she walked by Frank’s side. They passed a few other booths, then Chet stopped at one, where a young man held some plastic rings.

“Four chances for a quarter! Ten chances for a dollar! Win a prize for your sweetheart!”

“I’ll take ten,” Chet said as he held out a dollar bill.

“I think I’ll give this a try, but I think I’ll just go for four.” Joe took a quarter out of his pocket.

“Good thinking, Joe, Chet is a lot better at this game than you are!” Callie teased.

“I know! Let’s try and give Chet a run for his money! Vanessa challenged.

“In your dreams, Bender!” Chet then let out a derisive laugh.

“If you’re going to try and beat my Chet, you should all buy ten chances!”

Joe poked Chet in the ribs, a teasing smile on his face: “Ooh, ‘My Chet’!” He gave Chet a wink. Blushing but smiling with pleasure, Chet looked over at Carolyn and found that she was blushing also. Vanessa linked her am with Carolyn’s.

“You know, Carolyn is right, we should make this a fair competition, so come on everybody, fork over a dollar!”

Moments later, colorful plastic rings were flying through the air. Joe growled whenever he missed. Callie and Vanessa couldn’t stop laughing as they tossed their rings. Frank and Chet both concentrated as they aimed the rings towards the bottle. Carolyn cheered everyone on. Joe, Frank and Chet paid for two more games; so far Chet was winning the “contest”. In the first game, Joe managed to land four rings, in the second he landed three. In his last game he was able to get five rings on the bottles. Frank did slightly better…four rings in the first game, five in the second and seven in the last. Chet however landed all ten rings in each game.

The three girls walked ahead of the boys, each carrying a large stuffed teddy bear. Chet had a silly grin on his face; he couldn’t believe how well he’d done. He had never landed all then rings before! Joe and Frank would occasionally pat Chet on the back; they were as amazed as he was.

“You outdid yourself, Chet!” Joe praised his friend.

“Thanks! I really wanted to win Carolyn a teddy bear but I would have been happy if I got her a kewpie doll!”

“Hey, there’s my mom, and it looks like she’s waving us over.” Vanessa said.

Andrea was waving them over; it was time to leave the fair.

 “Did you have fun?”

A rounding chorus of “Yes we did! It was great!” came back.

“Good, I’m glad you did. Mary thinks it’s too late to start driving back home. So we’re going to a motel and leave early tomorrow morning.

Frank and Callie glanced at each other. The plan was being set in motion.
