THE CHAPTERS |
Mary stood waiting by the Hummer for everyone; Frank tried to see if Gray was hidden inside. Smiling at the group as they approached, Mary sought out Carolyn. “Well, I see you boys have been buys. I spoke with the sheriff and he recommended a very nice inexpensive motel we could stay at. It’s not very far from here. Frank, Joe, Chet, I don’t want you worrying about the cost of the motel. I don’t know about anyone else, but I could go for a nice hot shower!” Vanessa poked Callie in the ribs when Mary made the last comment. Pretending to be upset, Callie glared at her friend, then laughed along with her. Andrea, happy to have her car back, followed Mary out of the fairgrounds and to the motel. Frank, Joe and Chet followed behind her.
Mary and Carolyn were sharing a room. As they were about to enter the room, Mary paused and turned to look at the young girl. “Don’t be afraid when you see who is here. Trust me, trust you heart.” Not knowing what to say, Carolyn just nodded her head. Mary opened the door, moving aside to let Carolyn go in first. When she saw who was in the room, Carolyn almost turned to run away. She felt Mary touch her shoulder. “I promise you, you will not be with the Network. He is only here to help.” Leading Carolyn towards the bed, Mary had her sit down and began to explain their plan.
It was almost midnight when Frank was awakened by a knock at the door. Chet also woke up; he looked over at Frank, who shrugged. Being closer to the door, Chet got out of bed to see who it was, and was surprised to see Carolyn there. “Carolyn, is something wrong?” “No, I…I just wanted to see you. Mary and I are going leave very early and I…I wanted a chance to tell you goodbye.” Chet looked over at Frank and saw that he had gone back to sleep, he stepped outside and closed the door. “I’m really glad we got to spend this time together. I wish…I wish we could..” “I know, Chet, I do too. I’ll always remember today whenever I look at my bear.” Sensing that Carolyn wanted to say something else, Chet took her hand. “Did you want to tell me something? I mean, something else…You look like…I don’t know, like you’ve got something on your mind.” “Whatever happens tomorrow…don’t believe what you see.” “Huh?” “Promise me, Chet! Don’t believe what you see!” Seeing how upset she was becoming, Chet quickly agreed. ******* The next morning everyone was up early. Frank and Joe were talking with Callie and Vanessa. Chet saw Mary walking towards the Hummer, and he saw that Carolyn was already sitting inside. Just as Mary reached the vehicle, two men tried to stop her. “Frank, Joe! I think Mary and Carolyn are in trouble!” Chet yelled. As Frank and Joe started to run over to help, they saw Mary jump in the Hummer. With squealing tires, she tore out of the parking lot. The two men ran and jumped into a car, and sped after the Hummer. “Get in the van!” Frank yelled to Chet. “It’s two of those goons from the other day!” Joe told his brother. “You boys be careful!” said Andrea with concern “Go get them, Frank!” yelled a furious Callie. The Network men had a good head start, but Frank soon caught sight of them. “Faster, Frank! Those guys are going to catch up to Mary pretty soon.” “I know, Joe, I know!” Chet hadn’t said anything; he sat forward, straining to see what was happening. He saw the car the Network men were driving gaining on the Hummer. Chet felt confident that the car the Network men were driving couldn’t do any harm, the Hummer’s body would probably cause more damage to the car if it tried to ram into it. Suddenly another car appeared; it was another Hummer. It rammed into the one Mary drove, causing it to swerve. The second Hummer smashed into Mary again. With growing horror, the boys saw that Mary had lost control of her car.
They watched as the first Hummer spun out of control; it clipped a parked car and seemed to fly into the air as it flipped over and crashed on top of an oncoming truck. Frank skidded to a stop as the Hummer and truck exploded into a huge ball of fire. Stepping out of the van, Frank stood in shock. As Chet watched the two vehicles burn, one thing kept going through his mind: “Don’t believe what you see!”…He kept hearing Carolyn’s voice tell him that over and over. Joe looked over at his friend. “Chet…I…” “It’s okay, Joe. I don’t know why but…she’s okay.” Joe was worried; how could Chet say that? Hadn’t he just seen the accident? Thinking that Chet was in shock, Joe didn’t argue the point.
The trip back home was a sad and quiet one. Frank and Callie wondered what had gone wrong with Gray’s plan. Vanessa couldn’t stop crying for the loss of her friend. Although worried about Chet, Joe thought that he was just grieving in his own way. That could be the only explanation why Chet thought that Carolyn was still alive. ****** Somewhere in a small town, fifty miles out of Bayport city limits….
A young girl, seventeen years old, with reddish-brown hair and light blue eyes walked into the small classroom. She handed the teacher a note. “Class, we have a new student joining us today; her name is Carol Smith.” Smiling shyly, Carol found an empty chair and sat down. Returning to the blackboard, the teacher finished writing out the lesson. A dark-haired girl leaned over and tapped Carol on the arm. “Hi, I’m Cindy. That’s a pretty locket you’re wearing.” “Thank you, my boyfriend gave it to me. It was a ‘goodbye’ gift, he lives in Bayport.” “Oh, what’s his name?” “Chester.” The teacher knocked on the blackboard, Cindy quickly got back to her lesson. Carol held her locket for a moment, then took out some paper and began her schoolwork. A small smile was on her face. I’m finally going to be normal. The End
