CHAPTER 25

Later that evening, Joe lay in his bed thinking about Chet. Although his friend had been in a cheerful mood, Joe had sensed an underlying sadness. Sitting up, Joe stared out the window, gazing at the house next door. Remembering the young girl who had briefly live there, a small sigh escaped his lips.

“Hey, you okay?”

Turning towards the door connecting their rooms, Joe gave a sad smile to his brother.

“I’m fine, just thinking about Chet. Did he seem to be…oh, I don’t know, like he was…”

“Trying to be happy? Yeah, I got that feeling too.”

“I know he still misses Carolyn. I was thinking we could do something to help him…not to forget her, but to make it a little easier for him.”

“What did you have in mind?”

“You know how much Chet loves to go camping. I thought maybe we could take him camping while the weather is still cool.”

“That sounds like a great idea!”

“Too bad Biff is out of town on vacation and Tony is buys working at the pizzeria.”

“Yeah, we could have made it a real guys-only outing!”

“Don’t you mean a “He-man woman-haters club” kind of outing?” Joe laughed.

“You’ve been watching too much of the TVLand network.”

“Hey, that network is very educational!”

“Really, how?” Frank snorted.

“Well…the Little Rascals!...those shows were made in the 1920s…there’s a lot of stuff that we take for granted that they didn’t have during that time period.”

Crossing his arms across his chest, Frank grinned wickedly at Joe.

“Give me an example on that theory.”

“Uh…well…TELEVISION!” Joe smirked with satisfaction.

Frank had to laugh a his brother’s antics.

“Let’s start thinking of where we want to go. Then we can call Chet tomorrow.”

Joe’s eyes sparkled with glee as he prepared a list of things they would need.

Carolyn was preparing a backpack, filling it with some clothes, toothpaste and toothbrush. She was excited and a bit apprehensive at the same time. Mary Twofeathers was taking her on a camping trip. Carolyn smiled as she thought of the older woman. Mary had become a surrogate grandmother to her. Mary Twofeathers was the only person that Carolyn had confided in about the Assassins and the Network. Not even Chet’s aunt and uncle knew the whole story. Chet’s Uncle Tobias wanted to help because his nephew needed him and he didn’t have a love for the government officials.

Mary had been appalled that Carolyn had never been allowed outside the Institute. She made it a point to teach Carolyn about the great outdoors. As soon as the weather permitted, Mary had planned to take Carolyn on her first camping trip. The time was right and Carolyn was anxious to go. Of course she didn’t know about the dream Mary Twofeathers had about the three warriors.

“Are you all ready to go?” Mary asked her.

“Yes I am, I packed everything you told me to pack.”

“Good, let’s get going or we’ll miss our flight.”

“Our flight?” Carolyn was puzzled, “I thought we were going camping.”

“We are, just not here. Too cold at night, I found someplace nice, you’ll like it.”

“Just what are you up to, Mary?”

“Tsk, tsk….doubting an elder this way.” Mary smiled innocently at Carolyn who smiled back.

Chet, a happy grin on his face, sat staring at Frank and Joe. They had just finished telling him about their plans to go camping.

“I know just the place to go! My dad and I used to go there all the time.”

“Good, because Joe and I couldn’t decide which campground to go to.”

Suddenly Chet became serious. “Now when you say camping…you do mean sleeping inside of a tent with sleeping bags, right?”

“Yeah!” Joe enthused. “No sissy cabins for us! We’re men!”

Frank let out a groan as Chet snorted with laughter; Joe had started to strut up and down the front porch of Chet’s home. He stopped when he saw a car pulling up. “Hey Frank, isn’t that Callie driving up?” he asked his brother.

“Yeah it is and she’s not alone. Looks like Vanessa is with her.”

“So much for being men,” Chet chortled. “If your women have to come and keep you in line!”
