CHAPTER 25

Chet wasn’t too sure that the girls should tag along, more specifically if Callie should tag along! He figured that Vanessa could hold her own. Chet always considered Vanessa to be athletically feminine. She liked wearing pretty things but also liked joining in some of the games that he and Joe played. Chet thought that Vanessa was a great flag football player, even though she sometimes got carried away. Like the time she not only snapped up the flag, but also tackled Tony Prito in the process. Granted, Chet mused, it was Tony’s fault. If he hadn’t tried to push Vanessa away from him she wouldn’t have tackled him! Chet chuckled softly to himself as he recalled the teasing Tony endured.

Especially from Joe who carried Vanessa on his back as he ran circles around Tony laughing and hooting. Callie…well Callie was a horse of a different color. She was definitely what you would call “all girl”! Callie was normally cheering on the sidelines. Though occasionally she did join in; Frank always chose her for his team. He was always nice enough to make Callie his second or third choice, not wanting her to feel bad for being picked last.

The following morning, Chet found out that he had been worrying for nothing. When the Shaws and Mrs. Bender found out that there would be no parents going on the camping trip, they nixed Callie’s idea to come along. Frank and Joe were somewhat disappointed, but happy their original plan was in effect.

Vanessa had been looking forward to the camping trip. But when her mother called the Hardys and found out that Frank and Joe were going alone…Vanessa let out a sad sigh. She closed her eyes and imagined sitting by the fire with Joe. The romantic walks under the stars.

Andrea Bender walked past her daughter’s room and heard Vanessa let out another heavy sigh.

“Honey, he’s only going to be gone for a few days.”

“I know Mom but….do you know how rare it is for Joe not to be working on a case? Who knows what will happen when he returns!”

“Arrgh! Okay! Okay you win! I’ll take you and Callie camping. Do you know where Joe is going?”

“No, but they were letting Chet pick the place and I’m sure Mrs. Morton will know!”

“Give Mrs. Morton and call and find out. I’ll start packing.”

“Vanessa ran to her mother and wrapped her arms around her. “Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“Be sure to call Callie, make sure it’s all right with her folks if she goes with us.”

“Have I told you lately that you’re the best mom in the whole world?”

“Go make your calls!” Andrea said, smiling.

Carolyn had hoped to see Chet before her camping trip, but when she called his home she found that he had also left to go camping. Mary had assured her that she would see Chet. As they drove down the highway, Carolyn wondered why Mary had rented such a large vehicle. She glanced over at her friend who was giggling madly, as she drove the Hummer. Carolyn had to smile; Mary seemed to be enjoying herself immensely.

“Mary, why did rent this thing? It’s so big!”

“You never know who we might meet,” she replied mysteriously.

A few hours later, Carolyn spotted an SUV by the side of the road. The hood was up and smoke was rising from the engine. Carolyn saw a young girl with ash-blonde hair waving them down. For some reason the girl seemed familiar to Carolyn, then she let out a gasp.

“Mary, that’s Vanessa Bender!”

As Mary pulled over and parked in front of the SUV, she smiled slyly at Carolyn. “So it is.”

“Mom, I think help has finally arrived!”

“Good but go wait inside the car incase its some lunatic.”

“In that case, I’m staying right here. Joe taught me a few defense moves.”

“Don’t worry; I’m not a lunatic, just an old woman.” Mary chuckled.

Vanessa turned to see a gray-haired woman approaching her way, and then she saw someone else behind her. Vanessa let out a squeal of delight.

“Carolyn! Oh my goodness I can’t believe it’s you!”
