Joe stared glumly down at the fish; its dead eyes stared back at him. With a heavy sigh, Joe brought the knife in his hand down and sliced off the fish’s head. Then he cut a straight line down its belly, gutting the fish and threw the entails in the trash. Joe glared over at Frank who was starting a fire. “Tell me again why I’m the one cleaning these fish?” Joe demanded, his voice almost snarling. “Because you lost the draw,” Frank replied in a calm voice. “I still think I won,” Joe mumbled. “Joe, how many times do I have to tell you…paper covers rock,” Frank answered in an exasperated tone. “I’m never going to get this fish smell out of my hands! And I can’t believe that Chet caught more than we did!” Frank chuckled. “Chet’s been doing a lot of things better than we have!” Despite himself, Joe had to smile. “Yeah, he has. I always knew Chet was a good camper, just never knew how good!” “Remember, Chet was in the Boy Scouts and he did rank all the way up to Star.” “We could have been in the scouts too!” “Joe, if we were, we’d be lucky to make it out of Second Class!” Joe had to agree. He continued with his work, then a sad smile came to his face. Frank saw the smile, and a worried frown crossed his face. “You okay, Joe?” “Yeah, I was just thinking…I was thinking how Iola was upset that she couldn’t be in the Boy Scouts. You remember how she wanted to do everything that Chet did.” “Yeah, just like someone else I know who wanted to do everything I did.” The brothers smiled fondly at each other, Joe then went back to his task feeling in better mood. Frank quickly got the fire started and went over to help Joe. They worked quietly; Joe looked up as Chet walked back into the camp. “Have a nice walk, Chet?” he asked. “Yeah, and I think we may have some neighbors. I saw another tent not too far from here. I didn’t see anyone there; I figured they went exploring too.” “If I hadn’t gotten that fire started, I’d say let’s go back and invite them for dinner,” Frank replied. “Let’s go visit them tomorrow,” Joe suggested. “That way I can get rid of this fish smell from my hands.” Chet and Frank burst out laughing. ***** Callie couldn’t believe this was where they were camping. Where were the cabins? The indoor plumbing? A nice soft bed? She glanced over at Vanessa, who was helping to unpack the Hummer. “Callie, I don’t see your sleeping bag.” Andrea rummaged through the back of the Hummer. “I didn’t bring one, I thought…where are the cabins?!” “Cabins? Callie what are you talking about?” “You know…whenever we went camping, my parents always took me to the KOA! There were cabins, and sometimes a pool area. We’d go horseback riding…” Callie paused as she saw the puzzled expression on Andrea’s face. “Don’t worry,” Mary told Andrea. “I brought an extra one.” Vanessa put an arm around Callie. “Welcome to the real world of camping Shaw.” “Don’t fret Callie; I’ve never been camping before either.” Carolyn smiled at her. Callie wondered if this was such a good idea after all.
