THE CHAPTERS |
Callie woke up to find her whole body ached. Sleeping on the ground wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. Unzipping the sleeping bag, Callie crawled out and opened up her suitcase. A sad sigh escaped her lips; there was her hair dryer, curling iron and electric toothbrush. It was a good thing she had put in a fresh pack of batteries in her Walkman. Callie let out another sigh; she didn’t even have a decent pair of shoes! Vanessa and Carolyn were wearing sneakers; Callie had brought her sandals. She wondered if they would even find where Frank, Joe and Chet were camping! “Good morning sleepyhead!” Vanessa cheerfully greeted her friend. “You ready for some breakfast?” “Vanessa, how can you be so chipper this early in the morning!” Callie scowled. “Cal, it’s past ten o’clock, it’s not that early.” “Aren’t you tired from all that work we did yesterday? And how could you sleep on this hard ground?!” “Come on, Callie, we didn’t do that much. We just had to find some sticks for the fire. Mary Twofeathers did the heavy work, finding and carrying those rocks for the fire bed.” “I suppose,” Callie pouted. “What’s for breakfast?” “Trout! Mary and Carolyn were up early this morning and caught a few!” “Fish? We’re having fish for breakfast?” “It’s really good!” “I’ll pass, I’ll wait for lunch…what are we having for lunch?” “Trout,” Vanessa giggled. “I should have known,” sighed Callie. The tent flap opened and Carolyn’s face appeared in the opening. She smiled at her two friends. “Callie, I have an extra pair of moccasins for you to wear. That way you can go hiking with me and Vanessa.”
Callie was happy to learn that Andrea had brought some bread; she had some toast for breakfast and then joined Vanessa and Carolyn on their hike. “Stay on the trails,” Mary cautioned. “We will,” the three girls chorused back. Carolyn had taken the lead, Vanessa walked behind her, Callie brought up the rear. “Be careful of that vine, “ Carolyn warned. “That’s poison ivy.” Vanessa stood next to Carolyn, studying the vine; Callie was hoping they would find a restroom. “Hey, aren’t there any restrooms around here?” “Sure,” Carolyn replied. “Right over there.” Callie turned to see where Carolyn was pointing but all she saw were trees. “Where, I don’t see anything but trees.” “That’s our restroom, Callie,” Vanessa smirked. “I have to…you mean I have to…” Callie’s face turned a bright pink. Vanessa bit her lower lip, trying not to laugh at Callie’s distress. She put her arm around the other girl, giving her a small hug. “It’s not that hard, come on I’ll show you how to do it.” “You don’t mind if I keep following the trail, do you?” asked Carolyn. “No, go ahead; I have a feeling Callie wants a lot of privacy!” laughed Vanessa.
Carolyn chuckled as she continued walking; she kept thinking about the advice Mary gave her before she left the camp: Keep following the trail and you will find you heart. There was a small clearing up ahead; Carolyn could see the outline of a tent. Curious, she went to see who else was out camping. She could hear someone humming a tune. Carolyn giggled; whoever was doing the humming was now singing a few verses. She could see the person now, but his back was turned. All she could tell was the person was male. A huge smile crossed Carolyn’s face when the male turned around.
