THE CHAPTERS |
Vanessa and Callie followed the trail, hoping to catch up with Carolyn. They were coming up to a clearing where they heard a murmuring of voices. The two girls cautiously approached the edge of the clearing; staying behind a tree, they peeked to see who was talking. The girls saw Chet and Carolyn sitting on a log, holding hands, talking and smiling at each other. Vanessa moved back behind the tree. “Oh, that’s so sweet! She found Chet!” “Yeah, but where are Frank and Joe?” Callie wondered. “I bet if we just stay on this path, we’ll find another trail we can take to find Frank and Joe!” “I don’t know, Vanessa, Mary did tell us not to get off the trail.” “Technically we’ll still be on the trail; come on, don’t you want to find the guys?” “Yes I do, but I also don’t want to get lost!” “We won’t get lost, trust me!” said Vanessa with a smile.
An hour later… “We won’t get lost!” Callie said in a mocking voice. “It’s not my fault! If you hadn’t freaked out when we ran into that skunk…” “I did not freak out,” Callie huffed. “Oh please, you ran screaming when it came around the tree.” Vanessa paused, and then smiled: “you know Callie, you really should think about joining the track team. For someone with short legs, you run pretty fast.” Callie glared at Vanessa; she could see the other girl trying not to laugh. Realizing the silliness of it all, Callie started to giggle, which caused Vanessa to do the same; soon the girls were laughing themselves silly. ****** Joe was not in a good mood; he had no luck catching a fish. Frank had gathered enough twigs for the fire, and had bundled them up and tied them together with a piece of twine he had brought with him. Giving up, Joe helped Frank with carrying the bundle back to camp. Joe had been walking in front when he paused and listened. “Hey Frank, do you hear that?” “Yeah, sounds like someone’s laughing.” “And that someone sounds female!” “Joe, how can you tell…Never mind, I don’t want to know.” With a silly grin on his face, Joe wiggled his eyebrows and hurried along, following the sound of the laughter. Frank shook his head as he followed after his brother.
Vanessa and Callie stopped laughing when they heard a twig snap. Callie looked nervously over at Vanessa, who stepped closer to her. They let out a surprised gasp…it was Joe! Joe almost tripped and fell when he saw Vanessa and Callie. Suddenly Vanessa let out a joyful cry and ran over to him, throwing her arms around his neck. Luckily Joe had dropped the bundle he had been carrying; he wrapped his arms around Vanessa, giving her a tight squeeze. Knowing that Frank wouldn’t be far behind, Callie raked her fingers through her hair. “Joe are you all right?...Callie!” Callie tried to smile, but she couldn’t help herself, and started to cry. Dropping his bundle, Frank hurried over to her pulling her into a hug. “Cal, what’s wrong?” he whispered softly in her ear. “I…finally…find…you and…and…I look a mess!” Callie hiccupped. Frank hugged Callie tighter as he softly chuckled. He then whispered in her ear: “You look really good to me.”
