CHAPTER 25

Later that evening, Carolyn was experiencing her first S’mores.

Frank, Joe and Chet had walked the girls back to their camp; Andrea invited them to stay for a late lunch. Mary had caught some more trout; Chet had run back to get some potatoes and carrots to go with the fish. Andrea made a cucumber and tomato salad. Mary pointed out to Frank a closer place to set up their camp. This way, the boys could be close by the girls but still retain some privacy.

That night found Joe, Frank and Chet sitting next to their favorite girls roasting marshmallows and making S’mores. Callie was feeling much happier now that Frank was by her side. She scooted closer to him and felt his arm go around her shoulder.

Joe wanted to put his arm around Vanessa’s shoulders, but with Mrs. Bender so close by…he wasn’t sure if he should. To his surprise he felt Vanessa’s arm go around his waist. She rested her head on his shoulder.

Chet was helping Carolyn place the hot marshmallow onto the graham cracker and chocolate. He had her giggling when his marshmallow started to burn, small flames leaping out of it.

Mary and Andrea sat away from the teens, giving them a chance to be somewhat alone.

“Your daughter is very beautiful.”

“Thank you, I like to think she is too.”

Mary leaned forward and placed her hand over Andrea’s. “Don’t fear her love for the boy.”

Letting out a surprised gasp, Andrea stared in wonder at Mary. She didn’t understand how this stranger knew her fear. She had never even voiced it to Laura.

“I…I’m just so afraid that she’ll get hurt.”

“Hurt from his enemies or from him?”

“Both, I guess.”

Mary squeezed Andrea’s hand reassuringly. “His love for her is deep, it will last a lifetime. Your daughter is strong. Stronger than what you giver her credit for. Put your fears aside, they will be together forever.”

Andrea didn’t know why, but she felt comforted by Mary’s words. Curiosity got the best of her; Andrea wondered if Mary knew anything about Frank and Callie.

“Mary…I feel so silly, but…”

“You want to know about the others?” she chuckled.

With a nod of her head, Andrea let Mary know that she did. Mary turned to study Frank and Callie; a few minutes later she brought her attention back to Andrea. “They both love each other very much, but his love for another sometimes causes him to take her for granted. Being an only child, she doesn’t understand this kind of love, and jealousy overwhelms her.”

“You mean Frank and Callie won’t be together forever?”

“Oh yes, they will, but it will be a long hard road.”

A burst of laughter caught the ladies attention, and they turned to see Chet lobbing marshmallows at Joe, who was trying to catch them in his mouth. Andrea noticed that there was a deep sadness in Mary’s face.

“Mary, is something wrong?”

Mary never answered as she watched Chet and Carolyn together.

Early the next morning found Chet teaching Carolyn how to fish. Joe and Vanessa already had their fishing lines out. They sat out on a rock, with their feet in the water. Callie had promised Frank she would go fishing if he would take a walk with her later. Knowing how much Callie disliked fishing, Frank took her on the walk instead.

“Do they always do that?” Carolyn asked.

“Do what?” replied Chet as he looked where Carolyn was pointing. He saw Joe giving Vanessa an intense kiss.

“Oh…uh…yeah, all the time,” he mumbled as he threw his lint out into the water.

“Chet?”

“Yeah?”

“Never mind.”

Chet turned his head to face Carolyn, and he saw that she was blushing.

“What’s the matter?”

“You’re going to think I’m silly,” she said softly.

“No I won’t.”

Carolyn ducked her head down, raising her eyes shyly at Chet.

“Can we…well…would you…?”

Carolyn glanced over at Joe and Vanessa and back at Chet, who suddenly understood what she was trying to say.

“Oh!...Now I feel silly…I mean…I want to…I just wasn’t sure if…”

“After the kiss you gave me the other day?! It’s all I’ve been thinking about!”

With a smile, Chet leaned close….Suddenly Carolyn felt a pull on her fishing pole; she gasped in surprise.

“Chet, I think I got a bite!”

“What? Holy cow, you did!”

Laughing and shouting over to Joe and Vanessa, Chet helped Carolyn bring in her trout.
