CHAPTER 6

Bon Jovi’s Have A Nice Day blasted out of the alarm clock/cd player. On any other given day the song would be playing for another ten minutes before the young teen hit the snooze button. But today Joe Hardy threw back the covers and hit the Off button. He jumped out of bed, gathered the clothes he had set aside to wear today and ran to the bathroom to take a shower.

Hearing Joe’s alarm go off Frank slowly stretched his body. He was used to hearing his brother’s alarm. What amazed him was how fast it was shut off. That didn’t surprise him as much as hearing Joe enter the bathroom and turn on the shower.

Frank wasn’t sure if he should be puzzled or concerned. Joe didn’t normally get up this early in the morning, even if it was a school day. His brother was notorious for wanting to sleep as late as possible.

Twenty minutes later the shower turned off.  Frank listened to the soft sounds of Joe getting dressed. He lightly knocked on the door; the bathroom connected his room and his brother’s.

“I’ll be out in a sec, Frank!”

“No hurry – I was just wondering – are you feeling okay?”

The door opened a crack; Joe’s face appeared looking puzzled.

“I’m fine, Frank – why do you ask?”

“Well, it’s just…oh, never mind. Hurry up so I can get dressed.”

“Vanessa was right – you are weird!” Joe mumbled as he closed the door.

As the door clicked shut Frank had an epiphany – Vanessa Bender! Ever since the pretty girl with ash-blonde hair had moved to Bayport, Frank had noticed some changes in his brother. Joe seemed happier less moody. He had even been more cautious on their last few cases.

“Hmm – I wonder,” Frank said softly.

*****

Vanessa tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and watched as several cars drove into the school parking lot. She turned to face the offending person who was laughing at her softly.

Callie Shaw, her green eyes shining gleefully, and her dark blonde hair pulled back by a headband, smiled at her new friend.  She pulled her coat tighter, shivering from the chill, although it wasn’t as cold as last year. Last February they had a late snowfall; this year was slightly warmer.

“You know we’d be a lot warmer inside! I’m sure Joe will find you!”

Vanessa smiled at her friend but stayed where she was. She knew that Callie was also anxiously waiting for Frank.  “Here they come!” she said excitedly.

“Wow, and they’re early too!” Callie replied in a surprised voice.

Joe was out of the van before it came to a full stop, having spotted Vanessa and Callie standing near the front school steps. He almost ran over to the two girls, waving at Vanessa as he came near them.

“Hi,” he said breathlessly a huge grin on his face.

Vanessa returned his smile, staring into his blue eyes – the color of his eyes always reminded the young girl of sapphires. Sometimes she thought she could lose herself in those eyes.

“They’re serving hot chocolate in the cafeteria – want to get some?” asked Vanessa as she held her hand out to Joe.

Joe took her hand. “I love hot chocolate!”

Frank and Callie watched Joe and Vanessa walk inside the school.

“I think Vanessa’s fallen in love with Joe,” Callie said softly as she looked up at Frank.

“I have a feeling Joe’s fallen for Vanessa but I don’t think he’s realized it yet.”

*****

Joe wanted to sit next to Vanessa but he was feeling a little shy so he sat across from her. He grew unusually quiet as he stared down at his cup of hot chocolate.

“Van…”

“Hey Vanessa – Joe! Did you try the cinnamon rolls?” Chet set his tray down and sat next to Joe.

“Wow, Joe, you’re here awfully early!” Biff sat next to Vanessa. He smiled and winked at her.

Frank and Callie came to the table, each with a cup of hot chocolate. They were soon followed by Phil and Tony.

Joe finished his chocolate. “Come on Vanessa, I’ll walk you to your locker.”

“See you guys later!” Vanessa quickly got out of her chair and followed Joe.

Biff looked over at Frank. “Hey, is Joe okay? He’s been acting a little strange lately.”

As Chet stared at the young couple he answered Biff’s question before Frank had a chance.

“Joe’s fine – he’s just finally accepted that Iola isn’t coming back. And – and I’m glad, because I know my sister wouldn’t have wanted him to mourn for her forever.”

*****

As Joe and Vanessa walked quietly down the school hallway, she glanced over at the young blonde boy.

“Joe, can I ask you a question?”

“Sure, ask away!”

“Before Chet came over – you were going to ask me something?”

They had arrived at Vanessa’s locker; Joe fiddled with the combination lock.

“Well – I uh – I was wondering if – um, if you were busy this Saturday?”

“Nooo, I don’t have any plans,” she answered with her heart pounding in her chest. “Did Frank and Callie want to go see a movie?”

“I don’t know – I was kind of hoping that we could go out – just the two of us!” Joe said the last part in a rush.

“I’d love to!”

The two teens smiled at each other. Vanessa opened her locker and took out the books she would need for her first three classes. As they walked hand in hand heading for Joe’s locker, Vanessa wondered how she was going to survive the rest of the week!

*****

The rest of the week passed in a blur for Joe. He didn’t know how he managed to get through the last three days! He couldn’t even remember what happened in his classes!

Joe didn’t know why he felt so nervous. It wasn’t like he never been out on a date before! Even after – he paused for a moment as he thought about all of the different girls he had taken out after Iola’s death. But Joe knew that he had been using them to ease his pain. It hadn’t helped; his heart still ached for Iola. So he had stopped going out on dates and stayed home. Sometimes he accompanied Frank and Callie, but the majority of the time he stayed home.

Then Vanessa and her mother moved to Bayport. When he first met Vanessa, Joe could tell there was something different about her. She was pretty, but smart too. She was also strong and independent.  Joe really liked that; she gave him a run for his money!

He had been out with Vanessa before, but always with Frank and Callie or with a group of friends. This would be their first official date and this made Joe very nervous. He stared at his reflection in the mirror.

“Okay, Joe – you can do this! It’s not like you’ve never dated before! Hey – you’re a good looking guy – she’s gonna love you!”

Joe let out a sigh. ‘Please don’t let me make a fool of myself!’

Taking a few more deep breaths, Joe went downstairs – and thanked his mother for the use of her car. Frank had taken the van to pick up Callie. All too soon he found himself standing in front of the Bender home. He raised his hand to knock when the door suddenly opened.

*****

“Hi, I saw you drive up.” Vanessa smiled nervously.

“Wow – you look really – wow!”

Joe stared appreciatively at Vanessa. She wore a golden brown cable-knit sweater, dark blue jeans and hot pink ankle boots. Her hair fell in thick waves down her shoulders. Vanessa had spent an hour using a curling iron on her naturally straight hair.

“Thank you – you don’t look so bad yourself!”

Joe had “borrowed” a long-sleeved burgundy button-down shirt from Frank, to go with his black jeans and black loafers. As he took Vanessa’s hand, Joe didn’t feel nervous anymore.
