THE CHAPTERS |
Biff came to a stop, and got out of the car wondering what to do. He leaned back in and rummaged through the glove compartment. Biff found a small flashlight and turned it on, sighing with relief when it worked. The beam wasn’t that bright but it was enough for the young teen. Biff walked past the front of the car and noticed the drop-off to the ditch. He stood at the edge and shone the light down, trying to see if he could see anyone. “Hello – anyone down there?”Sitting next to Joe again, Vanessa was trying to convince him to let her go up again. Joe was shaking his head when….”Hello – anyone down there?” “That sounds like Biff!” he said excitedly. “I think you’re right!” Vanessa scrambled up. “Biff – Biff, down here! Joe and I fell down the ditch – Joe’s hurt!” Joe was hurt? Frank was not going to like that! Taking his cell phone out of his coat pocket, Biff called the older boy. “I’ve found them – Joe’s been hurt.” “Joe – hurt,” that was all Frank heard. The trees were interfering with his reception. Snapping the phone shut, Frank started to run back to the van. ***** “That was Biff,” he shouted. “Joe’s hurt!”Callie let out a gasp, quickly following her boyfriend. She was worried about her new best friend and Joe. The young girl worried about the younger Hardy, she hoped that Joe wasn’t hurt too badly! “Wait up, Callie, or you’ll fall and hurt yourself!” Tony called out as he rushed towards her. Taking her hand the young teen led the way back to the van. Frank was frantic; how badly hurt was Joe? How did it happen – were the men who stole the car responsible for his brother’s injuries? These thoughts ran through Frank’s mind as he ran to the van. Biff was carefully making his way down the ditch; he hoped that Frank had heard him. He knew that the signal had been terrible – he’d barely been able to hear Frank say ‘hello’. Biff was half way down the ditch when he heard the sound of gravel as a car came to a sudden stop. He paused, knowing that had to be Frank. “Biff – Joe – Vanessa, where are you?!” Frank called out frantically. “Down here, Frank! Joe and Vanessa fell down this ditch – be careful though! There are a lot of loose rocks and tree roots sticking out!” Biff answered back. Slipping and sliding, Frank was soon by Biff’s side. The two teens made their way down; Tony and Callie waited on top for them. Soon they reached the bottom. Frank quickly walked over to Joe and knelt down beside him. He examined his ankle, being careful not to cause too much pain. “I think we can get up if he holds on to us – what do you think, Biff?” Biff nodded. “It’s doable.” “What about Vanessa – she fell trying to climb up!” Joe protested. “I don’t need any help, not if Biff lends me his flashlight. Part of the reason I fell was it was too dark to see anything that well!” Vanessa held out her hand for the flashlight. Frank had Vanessa go up first, then he and Biff with Joe between them began to slowly climb up the ditch. ***** Andrea Bender sat in the kitchen of the Hardy home. She and Laura were quietly drinking tea while Fenton was with Chief Collig, searching for Vanessa and Joe. As she sipped her tea, Andrea glanced up at Laura Hardy and wondered how she did it. How did she handle this kind of stress? “I’m in awe at how well you’re taking this.” Andrea gave her a sad smile. “I guess I could say something glib – but it doesn’t get any easier.” Laura returned the smile as she lifted her cup and took a sip and then she sighed. “Andrea, I know that you’re worried for Vanessa, but Joe will take care of her. Even if – if it means losing his own life.” Andrea hoped that it didn’t come to that – she really did like the young Hardy boy. The sudden ringing of the phone caused both women to jump in fright. A nervous laugh bubbled as Laura got up to answer the phone. “Hello?”“Laura, it’s me – Frank found them! He’s taken them to Bayport General – Joe may have broken his ankle, otherwise they’re fine!” Laura sagged against the wall; she turned to look at Andrea with relief showing on her face. “We’ll meet you there!”Before Fenton had a chance to change her mind, Laura hung up the phone. “Frank’s found them – he took them to Bayport General!”Andrea snatched up her car keys that lay next to her tea cup. “What are we waiting for?” ***** Joe lay on the gurney staring forlornly at his ankle. It wasn’t broken but badly sprained. It was now wrapped tightly with an ace bandage. A pair of crutches leaned against the gurney. This was definitely not how he had wanted his date to end. Joe let out a sigh when someone knocked lightly on the door. “Come on in.” Vanessa’s head peeked in; she smiled mischievously at Joe as she entered the room. “Darn – I was hoping to see you in a hospital gown!” Joe’s face turned pink as he laughed. He looked down at his ankle again and frowned. “Van – I’m really sorry how our date turned out. I guess I can understand if – well, if you don’t want to go out with me again.” As he was speaking, Joe managed to sit up, his feet hanging over the side of the gurney. Vanessa moved closer to his side. She placed her hand on Joe’s face and forced him to turn his head and look at her. She stared intently into his eyes. As Joe gazed into Vanessa’s gray-blue eyes he could feel his heart melting for her. His resolve to never see her again breaking. With her heart pounding rapidly Vanessa leaned close and kissed Joe. She felt his arms go around her waist and pull her close. ***** Andrea was able to find a close parking space. She and Laura almost ran into the emergency room. Fenton was already there and greeted the two women as they came through the door. “Vanessa is fine – she has a few scratches and bruises. Joe has a bad sprain and will be on crutches for a few days.” Fenton assured his wife and Andrea. “What happened – did the carjackers do this?” asked Laura. “No, according to Joe, the carjackers – Artie Watson and Scott Smith – just wanted the car. Joe just tripped and fell down a ditch. Vanessa fell while trying to get help.” “Oh thank goodness,” sighed Andrea with relief. “Andrea, you just need to sign Vanessa’s release papers and you can take her home.” Fenton told her as he then looked down at Laura. “Frank’s gone to get Joe; I’ve already signed his release papers.” “I guess we should be glad it was a slow night!” Laura laughed. Frank was relieved that Joe got nothing more than a badly sprained ankle, it could have been worse! He didn’t bother knocking on the door. “Hey Joe – you’re free to go…”Frank stopped dead in his tracks as he came upon Joe and Vanessa in a lip-lock. “Why does this not surprise me?!”With a shake of his head, Frank quietly walked out of the room. Everything was back to normal.
