THE CHAPTERS |
The front doors of the building were chained with a padlock. Wondering if there was another way in, Con suggested they check the alley. Frank agreed and the small group walked down the alley. Callie pointed out the fire escape that she and Joe used to get away; by some quirk of fate the ladder was still down. Frank found the service door that Jax had used to get in. “Callie, are you sure there were only three men holding you and Joe?” Con asked the young girl. “Yes – we only saw Casidine and two other guys.” “I don’t want to take any chances – Frank, do you think you can get this door open?” “Yes, I brought my lockpicks…just as long as you don’t arrest me for breaking and entering,” replied Frank with a smile. “I thought Joe was the wisenheimer?!” Con said, returning the smile. “Yeah – well, when we get my brother back safely I’ll turn over the title back to him.” Con fought the urge to muss the older Hardy’s hair; instead he gave Frank’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “Don’t you worry – we will get him back safe and sound! Now get that lock open! I’ll go in through the service door – Chet and Tony can come with me. You take Biff and Phil and go up the stairs. Callie, Vanessa, I want you two to stay down here – if anything goes wrong I want you to call for help.” Callie made a face and sighed, reluctantly agreeing. Not that she really wanted to go back, but now that she and Joe were no longer outnumbered, and having Vanessa with her, Callie felt a little braver. Frank found a safe place to hide the girls, Callie was glad that it was slightly cleaner than her last hiding place! The two girls watched as Con, Chet and Tony went inside the building after Frank picked the lock. Then the older Hardy boy went up the fire escape followed by Biff and Phil. Con cautiously entered the building, walked into the hallway and found the emergency exit stairs. Thinking that Casidine might have his men stationed along the stairway, he signaled to Chet and Tony. “I’ll go in first,” the policeman whispered. “The window Callie pointed to is up on the fifth floor. If we don’t meet up with anyone until then…I want you two to stay close to me!” “Sure thing, Sergeant Riley!” “Not a problem!” Tony and Chet replied. Although he was not dressed in his policeman’s uniform, Con always carried his service weapon. With his weapon at the ready, the older man led Chet and Tony up the stairwell. Frank, Biff and Phil made their way carefully up the fire escape. Although he wanted to race up the stairs, the older Hardy boy knew that he and his friends needed to be as quiet as possible. No one wanted to alert Jax, or anyone else who might be holding Joe, to their presence. Finally reaching the window, Frank crouched low and raised his head to peek into the window. Seeing that there was no one in the room, he signaled to Biff and Phil to follow him inside. A quick search of the room let them know that Joe was not there. Checking that the hallway was clear, the three teens continued their search for the younger Hardy. Frank had Biff and Phil go down one end of the hallway while he went the opposite direction. “Be sure to check every door you find!” Frank whispered to his friends. As Biff and Phil turned to leave, Frank touched Biff’s shoulder. The blonde boy turned around. “If you find Joe but that Jax guy is there – no heroics! Get Con – I don’t want you guys to get hurt!” “We’ll be careful, but if there is any way that I can get Joe – I’m going for it!” Biff declared with a determined look in his eye. Biff shared a special bond with the younger Hardy. Like Joe, Biff had an older brother, but there was a six-year age difference between them. Growing up, Biff’s brother George didn’t care for his younger brother hanging around. Although Joe and Biff were the same age, due to the younger Hardy’s shorter stature Biff considered himself another older brother. He felt as protective of him as Frank did. Without another word, Biff turned and walked away. As Phil and Biff walked down the long hallway, they didn’t see any other doors until they reached the end. The door was open half way, and when Biff looked inside he saw the ropes and upturned chair on the floor. “This must be where Joe and Callie were held,” he told Phil. “I think you’re right. We should go back and help Frank.” Before they left, Biff gathered up the ropes: “Just in case we need them,” he said. *** As Frank walked down the hallway a small smile was on his face. He felt very blessed to have such a good friend as Biff Hooper. He came upon one room but the door was locked. Using his lockpick, he quickly unlocked the door only to find an empty room. Frank continued on; passing the elevators, he slowed his pace when he heard a voice. Pressing himself against the wall, Frank warily approached the slightly open doorway. He couldn’t see who was speaking so he squeezed into the room and saw a tall muscular man talking on the phone. The man’s back was to him so he did not see the older Hardy boy. While Jax was occupied, Frank spied the open closet door and quietly walked over, His heart pounded in a mixture of excitement and fear when he saw a pair of familiar shoes inside the closet. Slipping inside, Frank found his younger brother bound and gagged. Joe was straining to hear what Jax was saying when he saw a shadowy figure moving in the room. His sapphire blue eyes glittered with glee when he saw his older brother. Frank carefully removed the gag from Joe’s mouth; taking out his penknife he cut the ropes tied around his younger brother’s ankles. Intent on freeing his brother, Frank hadn’t realized that Jax had ended his call. Suddenly Frank found himself flying through the air. Jax had grabbed hold of the back of Frank’s collar. “What are you doing in here?!” Con, Chet and Tony had finally reached the fifth floor. As he and the two teens walked out of the stairwell, Riley saw two figures heading over to them. It took Con a second to recognize Biff and Phil. It was at that moment he heard a voice: “What are you doing here?!” Frank had dropped his penknife. Joe struggled to sit up and saw it. While Jax was trying to get Frank to talk, Joe reached for the knife. He finished cutting the ropes around his ankles and then started to saw through those around his wrists. Frank kept his face emotionless as he stared at Jax. “How did you get here? Answer me kid, before I do something I might regret!” But Frank didn’t answer – instead he just smiled. His gun at the ready Con ran towards the sound of the voice. He signaled to Biff not to come any further as he saw the young teen heading in the same direction. Jax was busy concentrating on Frank and didn’t notice the door open wider. Con quickly charged into the room and pressed his gun into Jax’s neck. Jax froze when he felt the cold steel of a gun. “I’d let him go if I were you,” Con said in a cold, hard voice.
