rank almost gave himself whiplash turning his head to see the oncoming car. He immediately jumped out of the way but he didn’t move fast enough.  The front end of the car hit his legs below the knee. He rolled a few times, curling into a ball from the pain. He could hear the car’s squealing tires. Raising his head he saw that the driver had made a U-turn and was coming back.

“Callie, no!” yelled Frank when he saw her run towards the car.

Callie dropped the two glasses of lemonade and grabbed the rake Frank had put aside. She ran screaming towards the car, brandishing the rake.

Taken by surprise, Alice swerved when she saw the blond woman running towards her.

Callie swung the rake, smashing it against the windshield. She had recognized Alice as she ran towards the car. When the rake struck the windshield Alice hit the brakes.

While Callie was “attacking” the car Frank was wondering where the police guard that Collig had assigned to them had disappeared to.

Thankfully the sound of a siren could be heard and was growing louder. Because Callie had caught her by surprise Alice wasn’t sure what to do. Then she heard the sirens and panicked. Stepping hard on the gas, Alice sped away from the crazed blond who continued to bang the rake against the car.

Callie was tempted to run after Alice but she remembered that Frank had been struck and could be hurt. Dropping the rake she turned and ran towards him. Falling to the ground Callie looked at him with concern.  “Are you badly hurt?!”

Before Frank answered her, he saw a policeman jump out of the car that had pulled up.  “Never mind me! Go after that car – that was Alice Walker!” he yelled to the officer.

The officer got back into his cruiser and sped away just as another car came to a screeching halt. Con Riley emerged from his car and ran over to Frank and Callie.  “Frank, what the hell happened?!”

“You tell me! I thought we were supposed to have a police guard!” Frank answered angrily.

“I’m sorry– I’ll find out what happened to your guard. I thought I saw one of our boys leave here – what happened?”

“Alice is what happened!” growled Callie. “Con, can you call for an ambulance? Alice ran Frank down with her car.”

“What?! Crap! That’s why I came here! There was a call not five minutes ago! Someone reported a carjacking….The owner of the car was run down. From the description we got of the carjacker…it was Alice.”

“Was the car owner badly hurt?” asked Frank with concern.

“No, thankfully. He tried to stop her; luckily for him she hadn’t gotten up enough speed, plus he jumped on top of the hood, and he slid off. He’s got quite a few scrapes and bruises but he’s going to be okay – almost scared the living daylights out of his mother, though.”

“Sounds like something Joe would do.” Frank smiled ruefully.

“Yeah, it does. Can you tell me exactly what happened?” asked Con.

“I needed to do some thinking so I decided to mow the lawn. I had just come up with a theory when I heard Callie scream. Next thing I know, a car is jumping the curb and coming right at me. I tried jumping out of the way but…I guess my legs are too long! I’m not sure but it feels like my leg may be broken.”

Con knelt down and gently touched Frank’s leg. Frank hissed painfully when Con felt his ankle.

“I’m no expert but yeah, your ankle might be broken…hopefully just badly bruised.” He was about to ask Frank to explain his theory when the ambulance arrived.

With the head start she had, Alice managed to ditch the car by parking it in a driveway. She ran down the side of the house, across the alley and over to the next block. A bus was idling across the street while several people boarded. Alice crossed the street and got on the bus, digging into her pockets for some change. Sitting in the back of the bus, Alice shook with anger and fear.

So close – she had been so close to having Frank. But then that crazy blond woman came out of the house! Alice stared out the window, trying to calm down. The bus came to a stop and she recognized the business street. Getting up, Alice got off the bus. She walked a few blocks till she came to the pawnshop.

The pawnshop owner heard the bell above the door ring, signaling someone had entered his store. He looked up to see a disheveled woman wearing sunglasses walk inside. She somehow seemed familiar as she approached the counter.

“I was here a few days ago with a friend of mine. You bought a few pieces from me – I’d like to sell you more.”

The man smiled, thinking that he could make a profit since the woman was alone.  “Of course – what do you have for me today?”

Alice took out the ring and earrings, placing them on the counter. The man picked them up, giving them a once-over.

“I can give you…a thousand for both.” He looked up at the woman and smiled. His smile faltered when she took off her glasses. He shivered with fear when he saw her eyes. They were cold and hard as she stared at him. Shark eyes the man thought.

“Excuse me? Did you say a thousand dollars…for the ring and the earrings?!”

As the man got a good look at the woman he realized who she was.

“I’m…I’m….My apologies! Let…let me look at these again!”

As he reached for the ring, he moved his left hand down and pressed a silent alarm. Catching his movement Alice clamped her hands on his head, slamming it down several times hard on the counter. The man slumped over the counter, unconscious.

Reaching over, Alice took off the key ring hanging from his belt. Walking to the back of the store she went out the back exit and discovered a station wagon parked there. She tried the key and found that it fit. Calmly, Alice drove home.

Laura, Gertrude and Fenton hurried into the emergency room where they found Callie sitting nervously in the waiting room.

“Callie, what happened!” Laura went over to comfort the girl.

“Alice…she tried to run down Frank.”

“What – where was the patrol car?!” Fenton was angry that Alice had managed to elude them.

“Oh no! Was Frank badly hurt?!” asked Laura.

“I don’t know, Con is trying to find out why they weren’t there. And Frank managed to jump out of the way…his leg may be broken.  I haven’t heard yet.” Callie answered their questions calmly.

“What about Alice – did they capture her?” Aunt Gertrude looked questioningly at Callie.

“No,” said Chief Collig who had just walked in. “She abandoned the car – the officers lost her on foot. But we may have a lead.”
