Fenton got comfortable in his favorite easy chair and set the foot rest up before turning on the television. It wasn’t often he got to watch the six o’clock news in peace. Frank and Joe had called to inform their parents they would not be home for dinner. They were taking their respective girlfriends out to dinner and a movie. He looked up and smiled as Laura handed him a glass of tea. She chuckled softly when the phone rang.

“I’ll get it.”

A minute later Laura was holding out the cordless phone to him.

“It’s Sam – he seems a little agitated.”

“Hello, Sam – what’s going on?”

“You need to turn to the national news.”

“I was about to watch the local station…”

“No, Fenton – you need to watch the all news channel.”

His curiosity now piqued, Fenton put the television on the all news channel. On the screen was a large building with smoke billowing out of the windows.

“….as I just reported...a prison riot broke out at the Women’s Prison Institute located just outside of Southport. The riot broke out this afternoon around three o’clock…no one knows what started the riot or how many causalities….There have been unconfirmed reports of one fatality and ten persons injured....Please stay tuned to this station for more details.”

“Sam, I need to call Collig – I believe that’s where…”

“That’s what I thought and why I called you.”

“Thanks Sam, I’ll call you back when I get more information.”

Laura was waiting patiently on the sofa for Fenton to finish his call. She had also been watching the news report. She looked anxiously at him.  “Fenton….”

“I’ll know more when I talk to Ezra.” Fenton got out of his chair to sit next to Laura, putting an arm around her shoulders. Before he got a chance to dial the phone rang.

“Ezra, I was just about to call you….Yes, yes I saw it….Do you know anything – can you tell me anything?!”

“Not yet, Fenton – but I do know the guy who is charge. I thought you’d like to make a little trip.”

“You know I would. I’ll be ready in twenty minutes.”

“I’m on my way.”

“Should we call the boys?” Laura asked once Fenton ended the call.

“No, I think they’ll be all right for now. I’ll call you when I know more.”

It took Fenton less than five minutes to be ready and he spent the rest of the time restlessly pacing the floor. Luckily Ezra Collig arrived ten minutes early.

Dr. Henry Samuels sped down the highway; he couldn’t believe how lucky they had been. He had gotten her out! His knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel.  He glanced quickly over his shoulder at the young woman, who was sleeping in the back seat.

Entering Bayport City Limits the sign read as the dark red sedan sped past. Henry smiled, he was almost there. Soon he would have his revenge.

Fenton Hardy was going to pay.

*****

Joe munched on the last of the popcorn while he waited for Vanessa, who had gone to the ladies room with Callie. He watched as a group of women went into the ladies room.

“Why do they do that?” he mused out loud.

“Do what?” Frank glanced at his brother.

“Go in pairs or groups.” Joe noted Frank’s puzzled expression. “Didn’t you ever notice that when that females go in pairs or groups to the ladies room? I want to know why.”

“What I’d like to learn is how that brain of yours works!” laughed Frank. “What made you even think about that?!”

“I was just observing! I mean, Vanessa and Callie went together and I’ve been watching groups of two or four go in together.”

“Uh huh,” replied a dubious Frank. He then shook his head in amazement, laughing softly to himself.

Joe threw the popcorn container away when he saw Vanessa and Callie walking their way.  “Finally, now we can get some food! I’m starving!”

“Joe, you just finished a large tub of popcorn…a hot dog…nachos, and drank a super size Coke – how could you be starving?!” exclaimed an incredulous Frank.

“Those were just snacks to hold me over till dinner.”

“I think you’re a little old for that kind of excuse,” deadpanned Frank.

“Leave my sweetie alone,” said Vanessa as she wrapped her arms around Joe. “He needs his nourishment and all the strength he can get to keep up with me!”

Joe had been smiling while Vanessa spoke then his expression changed to disbelief. “Hey!” Joe then joined in the laughter, his arm draped around Vanessa’s shoulders as they left the theater.

*****

Dr. Samuels found a hotel; it wasn’t the best hotel in Bayport but it would do for now. He woke the young woman, helping her out of the car and into their room. There were two full-sized beds, a small table and two chairs next to the window, and a TV sitting on top of a dresser. There was lamp on a table that was between the two beds.

The woman sat down on the bed, switching the lamp on. She opened the small drawer and found a notebook that the last guest left behind.

“Do you have a pen or pencil?” she asked the doctor when she couldn’t find one.

Samuels opened his briefcase, and finding a pen he gave it to her. He checked his watch.  “I’m going to get us some new clothes and something to eat. I shouldn’t be gone too long. Stay here, don’t go anywhere!”

The woman nodded to let him know she understood. Samuels gave her one last glance before he left. She didn’t care that he left – she wanted to be alone. She smiled at the sketch she made, wishing that she had some colored pencils. She stared down at the two men that she had drawn.

“We’ll be together soon.”

*****

Chief Collig and Fenton Hardy made it through the barricade and were escorted towards the front where the command center was located. Collig pointed out a tall, muscular, bald-headed man to Fenton.

“That’s Charlie “Red” Fine, he’s the head of the Federal Task Force in Southport. Red and I go a long way back, to our academy days.”

Noting the amused expression on his friend’s face, Collig couldn’t help but smile also.  “In his younger days, he had a full head of hair that was so red you could see him two blocks away!” he laughingly explained.

“I heard that! Ezra, good to see you!” Charlie grinned at his old friend. “What brings you here?”

“The riot – or rather, someone who was a prisoner here. Red, this Fenton Hardy – one of the prisoners was put here by his sons.”

“Actually, we preferred that she go back to the mental hospital but the D.A. convinced the jury that she should be in prison,” Fenton explained.

“Not very often that a victim cares about the wellbeing of their assailant.”

“He’s not the victim; Fenton is a private investigator as are his sons,” Collig said.

“And if you knew Alice Walker like I do…you’d be concerned too.”
