Deputy Ronnie Benson was living a dream come true. Ever since he’d been a small boy, the 25-year-old had wanted to be a police officer. He had been hired right out of the police Academy to work for the sheriff office in Silverthorne, Colorado. He was starting his second year on the force and loving every minute of it.
"Mornin’ Sheriff," the young man greeted Sheriff Marcus Williams as he entered the office, "Thanks for giving me an extra half hour break this mornin’. I got my car dropped off at the service station and walked here."
"Good mornin’ Benson," the sheriff replied, "You’ll be going out with Reynolds today. Anderson called in sick."

Cindy Kai turned the "Sentinel" press on and the large sheets of newsprint paper began running through the machine with a rapid swishing sound.
Running the small town newspaper was a full-time job for the young widow and her three daughters. She glanced up from the press to see her raven-haired oldest daughter sorting the newspaper inserts.
Sarah Kai was 21 and home for the summer from the liberal arts college she attended in Denver.
Across the room, 18-year-old Heather Kai was doing paste-up artwork for ads that would be run on the classified pages. Heather had the same dark hair as her older sister, but wore it long, rather than short and feathered like Sarah. Both girls were petite and had warm brown eyes like their mother.
"Mom!" shouted a voice coming from the front door, "Look what Deputy Ronnie gave me!" Cindy’s youngest daughter was 14 year-old Hannah Kai. Hannah’s dark hair was slightly lighter than her sisters’, and hung in a single braid down her back.
"What’s that, Banana?" asked Heather, using the nickname Hannah hated the most.
"None of your business, Feather!" Hannah retaliated, sticking her tongue out in Heather’s direction. Both Cindy and Sarah rolled their eyes at the all to familiar routine.
"Let me see, Hannah," Cindy interrupted and walked to where her youngest was standing just inside the door. Hannah showed her mother the silver dollar in her hand.
"Ronnie is spoiling you so that Sarah will go out with him," teased Heather, seeing the silver coin.
"I like Ronnie," declared Hannah, polishing the silver on her t-shirt, "Besides, he knows I collect coins. I hope he does ask Sarah out. He’s really nice."
At that, Sarah Kai blushed deeply, turning away from her sisters so they couldn’t see. ‘I’d sure like Ronnie to ask Sarah out, too.’ she thought, picturing the handsome, young officer with his wavy brown hair and sparkling green eyes.
Cindy had caught the smile and blush of her oldest daughter and felt a tug on her heart. ‘He is a nice guy. Maybe he’d be good for Sarah.’

The Hardys and Colt Tanner enjoyed Maddie’s spaghetti as they filled Maddie in on the plan to infiltrate the Wagner ranch.
"I don’t know, Joe," Maddie said, glancing at the blond boy, "If Ryan finds out why you’re really there, he might try to kill you, too."
"Frank and Joe have both worked undercover before," Mr. Hardy assured the woman, "And they’ve both been working extra hard preparing for this case."
Joe gave Maddie a quick smile, "I have friends who coached me in playing the role of a deaf person. I feel pretty confident that we can pull this off."
Maddie looked into Joe Hardy’s sapphire blue eyes. She remembered the first time she peered into those eyes and shuttered. He had been so hurt and helpless and had looked so vulnerable.
"Joe, if anything happens to you because of this, I don’t know if I could live with myself," Maddie stated.
"Don’t worry," Joe reassured the woman, "We’ll be careful, I promise!"
A few hours later, the Hardys reluctantly left the cabin with Colt Tanner. They arrived back in Torrey and Tanner left them off at the motel for the night.
"I’ll be by at 6 in the morning to take you back to the airport in Green River," Colt told Fenton Hardy and his sons, "That will get you there in plenty of time to make your plane."
Tanner purposefully avoided looking at Joe Hardy at the mention of another flight, but he didn’t need to worry. The time spent with Maddie and Carl had bolstered Joe’s spirits and he was determined that nothing would stop him from helping the Whitefeathers, even flying in a plane.
Frank
Hardy was at first surprised by Joe’s lack of response to the prospect
of flying in a plane again, but sensed that Joe had, in his own way, come
to terms with his fear. He marveled, not for the first time, at Joe’s
inner strength and Frank felt overwhelmingly proud of his baby brother.
